SHAG TIME NEWS SOUTH STRAND SHAG CLUB March 2018 PRESIDENT S CORNER Dance with the SSSC at the VFW Sat. Nights 7:30P.M. 11:00P.M. GREETERS If you are interested in being a greeter contact Board members Angela Lackey or Gary Livesay. This is a great way to meet other members, and help the club on Saturday nights. BOARD MEETING The board will meet at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, March 6 at the VFW. All Members are welcome to attend. 2017 MEMBERSHIP End of the Year Members 2017: 274 CONGRATULATIONS! Many of us have watched as Junior Shagger, Noah Veon (Grandson of SSSC member Darlene Hejl), has grown up so quickly and developed into a fantastic dancer. He and partner Mary Elizabeth Jacobs won 2nd place in the JR I division in the Shad Alberty Contest held on Jan 19. The club is very proud of them! 2018 SOS CARDS The SOS Spring Safari will be here before you know it. It runs April 20 29, with the big parade on Saturday, April 28. Without a card, you cannot enjoy all SOS has to offer. Cards are on sale now for $30 to club members - a $5 savings from the regular price of $35. Contact Merwin Moore or Deborah Mangan to purchase. MUSIC REQUEST FORMS It is easy to let the DJ know what songs you want to dance to. Just fill out a song request form located at the Greeters Desk. All of our DJ s will be glad to play them for you. We hope to see everyone on the dance floor on Saturday. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Were you at our Valentine Party? If you were then you were among many of our club members and guests who had a great time. If you were not then you missed out on one of our best parties ever. Bill Jones was our DJ and he kept everyone dancing to all of our favorite beach music. Once again, Gail Dixon had the closest guess to the correct number of candies in the candy jar. Meri Huggins was the lucky winner of our gift basket. (Thank you Mary Ross for putting the basket together). The family luck continued as Ed Huggins had the lucky number in our split the pot drawing. It was another great and fun evening for our club! Don t forget our St. Patrick s Party, March 18 at the Beaver Bar. The Holiday Band will be, once again, providing the music. They always do a wonderful job. I hope to see all of our club members in green. Our club parties take a lot of effort to put together. Thanks to everyone who helps with the food organization, decorating, and handling the door duties. A special thanks to our members who provide the delicious foods. Some exciting news: Quite a few new members have joined the club. Check for the names later in the newsletter. There were too many to list here. Anytime you see unfamiliar faces, be sure to introduce yourself and make the new members, as well as visitors, feel welcome. DANCE WITH ME LABELS Singles and those who love to dance with everyone - did you know that dance with me labels are available at the Greeter Table? Put one on and everyone will know that you are looking for someone to dance with, and with our club you will have no lack of partners. SHAG WORKSHOP We typically feature a Shag Workshop at the beginning of our last meeting of each month. Because the last Saturday of March is the day before Easter, we will not have a workshop. Our next workshop will be on Saturday, April 30 with Wayne & Judy Bennett. BITS & PIECES In Our Prayers are all Service Women and Men, Serving Our Country PRIZE DRAWING EACH SATURDAY Each Saturday, one of our active members will win a $25 door prize. The winner must be present and we ll draw until we have a winner. GET WELL We want to keep any members who are recovering from illness or surgery, or have lost love ones, in our thoughts and prayers. Please let us know if you know of someone in need. NAMETAGS & CLUB SHIRTS The first Saturday of each month is Club Shirt Night. This helps our members get to know each other. Wear your nametag to every club function. Better yet, promote the club by wearing a club shirt whenever you go out shagging. WHERE TO DANCE Can t make it to the VFW for Saturday night then try the Beaver Bar in Murrells Inlet on Wednesday nights. DJ Bill Jones keeps the music playing and the dance floor full from 7-10 pm. Don t forget that Bill and Brenda Barber offer free shag lessons at 7pm. Castaways, on Front Street in Georgetown also has shagging on Friday nights from 7 to 10pm. TIME TO RENEW It s time to join or renew your membership for 2018. You ll be able to enjoy all the club events throughout the year. Membership fee of $25 per person remains the same as last year. You won t find a better deal. Join today. Use the Membership Form attached and either mail in your renewal, bring it to one of our VFW meetings, or give it to any board member. If you have some friends who are interested in shagging, encourage them to join. You don t have to be a great dancer to come out and have fun. The first Saturday of each month is Shirt Night. We ask all members to wear their favorite club shirt. But, the best time to wear it is when you go out dancing, to promote the club. Many club members have asked where they can get a club shirt. This is easy to do. Just go to any store and buy a shirt you like then take the shirt to Surf Water Promotions (see their ad) and they will apply the SSSC logo to any location you want on the shirt. They charge very reasonable prices and do a great job. This also helps support one of our key advertisers. Now there is no excuse not to have a SSSC shirt on the first Saturday each month. See Calendar for information about our weekly get-togethers at the VFW. April 20 29, 2018 SOS Cards available from the SSSC for only $30. That s less than the $35 at the beach. Other clubs meet only once or twice monthly and on weeknights. We rely on the VFW for a great place to dance and they rely on us for our support. Their bar is their main source of income. Our bar purchases help them remain viable. We kindly ask you to purchase your drinks, wine, beer, soft drinks, and bottled water from the bar. It s a Win/Win for us all. Like many similar organizations, our VFW is struggling to stay viable. Beginning in January, and each meeting afterwards, we ll be asking you to make a voluntary donation to the VFW. Any amount will be appreciated. March 18 April 20 St. Patty s Party at the Beaver Bar Spring Safari Party (SOS) I m sure all of us had, or still have, a loved one, a family member, or friend who proudly served our country. The Murrells Inlet VFW, our club home, has a memorial to honor our veterans. For only $50, you can have a custom engraved brick to honor your veteran. Contact the VFW for details.
