The Hornets are trying to snap a five-game losing streak in addition to notching their first win against a Division I opponent this season. DSU has been idle since a 97-48 wire-to-wire loss to Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Dec. 9. The Dukes hit four three-pointers in the first three-and-a-half minutes to help build a 16-3 lead. Duquesne shot 58.6% from the field in the first half and was ahead 53-16 lead at the break. Duquesne knocked down 18 three-pointers in the contest (18-34), tops for a Delaware State opponent this season. Artem Tavakalyan was the only Hornet in double figures with 13 points. He also led the team with seven rebounds in the contest. Delaware State has played its last five games without top player Kobe Gantz (so.), who is out indefinitely with a knee injury. Gantz was leading the Hornets in scoring (13.6 ppg), assists (20) and steals (16) when he went down in the Nov. 25 win over Georgian Court. Newcomer Simon Okolue is the team rebounding leader at 6.5 per game. Delaware, a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, is trying to snap a four-game skid. The Hens are coming off a 92-68 home loss to No. 9 Notre Dame on Dec. 9. Kevin Anderson was UD s top scorer with 23 points and also dished out a team-high seven assists. Ryan Daly added 15 points and Ryan Allen 14 for the Hens in the game. Daly leads four Delaware double-figure scorers at 16.5 points per game this season. He also leads the Hens with 19 three-point field goals. Anderson is the Hens second leading scorer (13.0 ppg) and assist leader with 28. Delaware s Ryan Allen (12.6 ppg) and Anthony Mosley (10.4 ppg) are also doublefigure scorers this season. HORNETS vs. HENS SERIES HISTORY (UD leads 13-4) Delaware has won the last two meetings to open up a 13-4 series lead. The teams last met on Dec. 2, 2016. The Hens won the contest 64-49 at UD s Carpenter Center. Delaware State was outscored 28-10 in the last 14 minutes in the game. The Hornets led 39-36, but missed 14 of their last 18 shots to suffer their first road loss to the Hens since 2010. Delaware s 2016 win also snapped a five-game losing streak by the home team in the series. The last time the teams met in Memorial Hall, Delaware pulled out a 62-56 victory in the 2015-16 opener for each team. Delaware State led 37-31 at the half, but was outscored 31-19 in the final 20 minutes. The Hornets hit just 9-of-32 second half shots (28.1%), including 1-of-11 from three-point range (9.1%). DSU was also outrebounded 44-29 in the contest. Delaware State won the first meeting between the teams in 1991. Delaware took the next eight games from 1992 to 2000. The teams did not meet from 2001 to '08. The Hornets are 1-7 all-time vs. Delaware in Memorial Hall, the lone victory on Dec. 1, 2009 (75-67). @DSUMBB @DSUHORNETS @DSUMBB DELAWARE STATE PROBABLE STARTERS No. Player Pos Ht/Wt CL 2017-18 Key Stats 3 Joseph Lewis F 6-9/205 SR 2.4 ppg/2.7 rpg (Missed first 4 games had 7 pts., 3 reb.; 2 assists in 2017-18 vs. E. The Hornets defeated Savannah State, Howard and top seed North Carolina Central to advance to the 2015 MEAC title game. NC Central was undefeated during the 2014-15 MEAC regular season. Delaware State was invited to compete in the 2015 College Basketball Invitational (CBI) and serve as host of a first round game, marking the first post-season home game in team history. Among the other highlights of Walker s first full season as head coach of the Hornets was 72-65 win at Wake Forest, Delaware State s first-ever victory against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent. The Hornets also posted impressive road wins at Penn in the historic Palestra (77-75) and Delaware (66-53) during the 2014-15 season. Walker is also credited with aiding the development of center Kendall Gray, who became the second player in league history to earn MEAC Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year in the same season (2014-15). Last season, Gray also became the first player in recorded NCAA Div. I history to reach 30 points (33) and grab 30 rebounds in a game (Mar. 5, 2015 vs. Coppin State). Also during the 2014-15 season, Amere May became the first Delaware State player to lead the MEAC in scoring in more than 20 years. Walker first joined the Delaware State staff as an assistant coach in July 2000. During his stint as the interim coach, Walker led the Hornets to a 5-6 overall record and 5-5 mark in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Prior to the appointment, the team was 4-15 overall and 0-6 in the conference. Delaware State posted a season-high three-game win streak, highlighted by a victory over MEAC Tournament runner-up Morgan State, during Walker s stint as interim head coach. During the 2013-14 season, Hornet junior center Kendall Gray set a team record with 81 blocks. Gray was named to the 2014 All-MEAC Second Team. Gray held the previous team record with 75 blocks as a sophomore the previous year. The Hornets recorded 185 blocks during the 2012-13 campaign, the second-best single-season mark in team history. During the 2011-12 season, Walker s work with the Hornet big men was instrumental in the team's school-record 192 blocks, shattering the record previously held by the 1989-90 squad. Delaware State was tops in the MEAC and fifth among all NCAA Division I teams at 6.6 blocks per game during the 2011-12 campaign. In addition, DSU power forward Marques Oliver moved into first place on the team's list for career blocks that season. Oliver finished his career with 222 blocks. Walker helped lead the Hornets to three consecutive MEAC regular season titles from 2004 to '07, during which the Hornets posted a league record of 46-8 (.850). The Hornets appeared in three consecutive MEAC Tournament championship games, capturing the title and accompanying NCAA Tournament berth in 2005. The following year, Delaware State defeated Northern Arizona on the road in the National Invitation Tournament for the team's only national post-season win. The Hornets also appeared in the 2007 National Invitation Tournament. HEAD COACH KEITH WALKER Walker served as head coach at Division II Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C., for seven seasons from 1993 to 2000. He posted a 91-102 overall record at Shaw, including a 21-9 mark and the school s first-ever NCAA Tournament berth during the 1994-95 season. He led the team to a 17-9 mark in the 1997-98 campaign. The Bears finished in the Top 10 of the Sheridan Broadcast Network Black College poll during two of Walker's seasons. In 1998, he coached a team of U.S. collegiate players to a bronze medal at a tournament in Russia. From 1987 to '93, Walker was an assistant coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. IUP was ranked number one in the NCAA Division II poll during parts of three seasons while Walker was on the staff. Before entering the coaching ranks, he enjoyed a playing career that included a brief stint with the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers during the 1985-86 season. Prior to reaching the NBA, Walker played a total of seven years with various European and U.S. professional basketball leagues. As a collegiate player at Clemson University, he helped lead the Tigers to a 23-9 overall record and an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament during the 1979-80 season. Walker earned a 1981 Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Clemson in 1981; and a master s degree in Student Personnel Services from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1991. Keith and wife Kim have three children, Dockery, Zachary and Sawyer. Dockery was a four-year basketball standout at Brown University.
