GRIZZLIES HEAD COACH, TONY BARONE Tony Barone Sr. took over as e Grizzlies interim head coach on December 28, 2006, his first head coaching stint in e NBA. He s also in his seven season wi e Grizzlies as e team s Director of Player Personnel. Among his many accolades, Barone can be credited wi scouting e talents of Spain s Pau Gasol, e 2001-02 NBA Rookie of e Year. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach under former head coach Hubie Brown. Barone joined e Grizzlies after two years as a Big 12 color commentator wi ESPN Regional. He served as e head coach at Texas A&M from 1991 rough 1998, wi his 1994 team playing in e NIT Tournament. While at Texas A&M, Barone was selected Souwestern Conference Coach of e Year. Prior to working at Texas A&M, he was e head coach at Creighton from 1985-1991. While ere, he was selected twice as Missouri Valley Conference Coach of e Year. Barone began his coaching career in e Illinois High School ranks after playing at Duke. A native of Chicago, Illinois, he has over 36 years of playing and coaching experience including assistant coaching positions wi Duke (1972-1974) and Bradley (1978-1985). Barone was an academic All-American, earned ree letters, was elected team captain as a senior and earned a degree in English while at Duke. Tony and his wife of 37 years, Kay, have ree children: Amy, Tony Jr. and Brian, and ree grandchildren: Katie, Christie and Kevin.
