Altos n o 154. February 2017 news

Introduction from the Captain - Mr Knut Pedersen A new year has started and hopefully 2017 will be the best year ever. January started with the annual New Year scramble. We had 145 people attending, and a great and fun day at Pinheiros Altos. The scramble events attract a lot of people and are one of the events that everyone has down in their calendars. Also I will mention that your playing handicap is your own responsibility. The list down stairs may not be your updated handicap. So keep this in mind for the future. With these few words I will hope to see you all on the upcoming events and have a fun and enjoy the game we all love. The rest of the month has had the normal events, and no big tournaments. So it is not much to report. I have had my first vacation in 6 years, and we went to Thailand to get some sun and warm weather. It was nice, but great to be back in Portugal. I also want to thank Stewart Harper that he is continuing as chairman on the Greens-committee. I can understand his frustrations from time to time, but without him I will not dream of the state we would have on the course. Director of Golf - Monthly Report The highlight of January 2017 after the New Year s day Scramble was the Algarvian Invitational Senior tournament which was played for its 5th year running. As the last 2 years it was organized as a joint venture with Quinta do Lago and played over Pinheiros Altos Pines-Corks course and for the first time at Laranjal course over 4 very competitive rounds of Golf. On the final hole of the final round 2 Spaniards were in contention Miguel Angel Martin & Pedro Linhart who shot 65 at Laranjal on the 3rd day of the tournament in what was the most difficult conditions you could dream of. Pedro had to birdie the last hole for a closing round of 73 while he had been struggling all day but managed to win the tournament with a score of 9 under par for the 4 days tournament while the 68 of Miguel angel Martin left him short of 1 shot. Pedro Linhart won the 7.000 of prize money for first place. The tournament was a great success with 94 players which 61 of them were professionals. Both courses were presented in top conditions and all players were very complimentary about the tournament organization which is a ramp to grow for next year. Of course the tournament would not have been possible without the on-going support from the sponsors John Waters who has been sponsoring since the first event and was joint again this year by Denis O Brian. Thanks to them the prize money for the tournament was up to 30.800. We are already planning next year tournament which will be as well supported as this year as we already have the sponsor confirmed and many of the players already showing their interest to return to the Algarve to play next year. Following the Algarvian Invitational we also organized in Partnership with Quinta do Lago, San Lorenzo & Dona Filipa hotel the second Algarvian Charity Pro Am which was played over Quinta do Lago South & north, san Lorenzo & Pinheiros Altos, most of the 128 participants stayed in the Dona Filipa Hotel and to achieve 32 teams for the second edition was a great success and almost all the teams have already confirmed their participation in the next year Algarvian Charity Pro Am which will be open to 40 teams in total. The winners were Gary Lenaghan team with Nick Gammon, Matt Hart & Keith O Neill as his 3 amateurs with a score of 45 under par for the 4 days. The individual Pro score was won by David Coupland shooting 17 under par for the 4 rounds. On a personal note I would like to thank all my staff involved in organizing both tournaments and specially the green staff with the help of the greens committee who have made a tremendous effort to recover the golf course and presented it in fantastic conditions. Winter Medal was won by Kay Ford with a score of 69 while the January Stableford was won by Steven Crowdey with a score of 38 points who is playing from a new handicap of 12,5 due to his very good results playing with the cloggies as well! I am delighted to announce that Michael Collins has accepted to be the candidate nominated by the committee to be the future Vice-Captain as from the next AGM while Lisa Burns will be the Lady Vice Captain. I am sure that both of them will be a great credit to the Golf Committee and look forward to be able to work with them in developing the Golf Club over the next few years. Mr. David Markey will run for President for another 3 years as the candidate nominated by the Golf Committee and I am sure that this will bring stability and continuation to all the effort made by the Golf Committee to improve the facilities and conditions of the members within the Golf Club even in a proprietary environment. The position of the President as well as the position of the Vice- Captain is up for election at the AGM. Additional nominations page 4

may be proposed and each additional nominations should be supported by 4 principal members. These rules are not very clear in the rule book but the committee will propose some amendments to those rules at the AGM to clarify the situation of elections. Please keep an eye open for the special day on 17th March to celebrate St Patrick s Day and also the Mens Pairs Matchplay to be played from 9th March 2017. I wish you all a great start to the Golf Season and look forward to see many of you in the next few weeks! This year we also have election for the 2 elected Members representative on the Golf Committee and if any member is interested to join the committee they should be proposed and seconded by Principal Members to be elected at the AGM. With our support they have acquired a new linear accelerator which is the most up to date technological equipment in Portugal in the fight against cancer. It will be of great benefit to people living in Alentejo and the Algarve. They have also acquired a new Mobile Unit for Breast Screening which contains the newest technology. This unit will become operational from June 2017. These projects are only possible with the hard work and support of friends of AOA. A big thank you to everyone in PA for contributing so generously to Pink Day. Christophe, Lurdes Pereira, Shirley Griffiths and Mai Markey page 7

Ladies Section - by Mai Markey We have been truly blessed with the weather here for most of January. It s been a busy month here on the course with the Algarve Seniors followed by the Pro Am. hence we had two early starts...unfortunately when the temperature dropped. on the day presented her with a farewell gift of a cork bag and pen...a reminder of all her happy times on the Algarve. It was a lovely day but sad saying bon voyage to a long standing member of PA. The first Medal of the year was played under beautiful blue skies. The following week was a team event always good fun. Past Lady Captain Margo and Paul are leaving the Golden Triangle for the blue seas of Turkey. We all wish them health and happiness in their future life together. On her last golfing day the 18th Margo kindly sponsored the monthly Stableford including nearest the pin in both divisions. Conditions were difficult as the temperatures dropped and the wind came from the North...not easy for everyone on the Olives. The players On the 25th we had three matches in the Wainwright Trophy. Two flights went down the 19th so well done to everyone playing. Everyone else played Matchplay team better ball... always fun and happily the handicaps on the day worked out well for the flights and nobody received too many shots. As we roll into February we have the Foursomes Championship on the 8th Feb and St Valentine s weekend commencing Friday 10th. Also we have a mixed friendly with Carvoeiro on the 25th February so please sign up and enjoy the wonderful facilities we have at Pinheiros Altos. Social Golf - by Paula Burke Hickey What a great start to the New Year, wonderful weather & a great turnout of golfers to play in the Social Golf competition. We had 48 players including one new member & four guests. It was a pleasure to welcome them to the Club. Some players felt it was a bit slow, it was a Waltz afterall, however, if all players could pick up once the necessary score has been achieved that would help speed things along. The next Social Golf competition is on 5th February at Quinta do Lago. It is being organised by Iain Callaghan & Nils Leffler. Tee times are from 8-9.30 & limited to 15 pairs. The sign up sheet is already on the board. The Social Committee would like to wish everyone a very Happy & healthy 2017. We had a very good meal afterwards, the prize giving was a rowdy occassion, with plenty of laughter & good humored banter. It was a good insight for our guests & new member as to the strong competitive element within the Social Golf section, & all for a bottle of wine!!!! page 8

Report from the Greens Committee In our January report we kept to bullet points as we hoped this would enable our report to reach all members by e mail. We have had no feedback and we hope that is not a negative comment and we will repeat the process this month. 1. The course is tidy but the greens are slower and have not been ironed as much as we would like. They are however quick and firmer than at many previous times. There has been some slitting of greens but this will stop now we have the tining machine back in service. 2. There is still some disease on certain fairways and the cold weather has left many of the Bermuda grassed holes with brown grass and little growth. We intend to encourage the kikuyu grasses on these fairways. 3. We are still waiting for the spikes to be removed from the rakes, hopefully this will be done before our next report! Some bunkers need more sand and/or deep raking. 5. There is a lot to do but the STRI are returning in April to check progress and we hope they will see positive improvements. 6. There are caterpillars on the course particularly on third of corks near the pine trees between the fairways and 4th tee. Additional spraying is planned and members should avoid the caterpillars wherever possible! 7. David Ford will be unavailable for a few weeks whilst he has some minor surgery but the committee will be meeting very shortly with our consultant agronomist Carlos Guerrero, together with the new appointee and Christophe and Sesinando and the Captain. The writer has been asked to continue as Chairman and has agreed subject to certain criteria. We will keep members fully advised. 4. We reported last month that a new senior appointment was being made and we can report that the assistant head green keeper at San Lourenco, Marco, will be joining the green staff to supervise and ensure that the main recommendations of the STRI report are enacted. We are due to meet Marco very soon and he is due to start in the next week or so. He is in his 30 s speaks English and is a golfer and is well qualified. We believe this is a very positive appointment for the club. Stewart Harper Chairman, Knut Pedersen Captain, David Ford Vice Captain page 9

Academy News Forthcoming Events February & March 2017 We have been busy changing the bunkering on the range. It is work in progress. We have filled in 3 and created 2 newer bunkers on the left hand side to help you sharpen up your wedge play. We hope to add some other features at a future date to help improve our practice facilities.
