SETTING THE STAGE Followiong a 61-42 victory over St. Bonaventure, Green Bay opens Horizon League play in a rematch of the 2012 Horizon League Championship game against Detroit (7-5). The Phoenix has won five straight, and has allowed opponents to score an average of just 41.0 points per game during the winning streak. In the win against St. Bonaventure, Green Bay continued to dominate inside with both Breannah Ranger and Stephanie Sension scoring in double figures. As a team the Phoenix outscored the Bonnies 36-10 in the paint, giving the Phoenix a combined 172-50 scoring advantage in the paint over the past five games. Detroit travels across Lake Michigan to the Kress Center with a 7-5 record, having last played in a 74-60 loss at USF on Dec. 31. Led by the nation s second-leading scorer in Shareta Brown at 26.0 points per game, the Titans have scored 88 points or more in four contests this season. THREE-POINT PLAY 1. Defensive Dominance: Green Bay ranks first in the Horizon League and fifth in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 48.5 points per game. In eight of 12 games this season, the Phoenix has held opponents to less than 50 points. Over the five-game winning streak, Green Bay has allowed opponents to shoot just 29.2 percent from the field, including an impressive 23.2 percent mark against NDSU on Dec. 18. 2. Bauer Power: Senior Lydia Bauer has found her stride from behind the arc, drilling three shots from long range in each of the past two games. The Lake Zurich, Ill. native hit three of six attempts at Wichita State on Dec. 30, and three of five attempts against St. Bonaventure. Bauer finished with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds against the Bonnies. 3. One-Two Punch: Tonight s matchup pits the top two teams selected in the Horizon League preseason poll. Green Bay was selected to finish first with 25 first-place votes, while Detroit was second with the remaining two. The two teams met in the 2012 Horizon League Tournament Championship game where the Phoenix defeated Detroit to advance to a fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance just weeks after the Titans had spoiled a 40-game winning streak in a win at the Kress Center. She scored 12 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting against North Dakota State on Dec. 18, and posted a career- and team-high 14 points against St. Bonaventure. Ranger shot 70 percent (7-10) against the Bonnies, and holds a team-best 60 percent (24-40) mark from the floor this season. Crunch-Time Canadian: Freshman Kaili Lukan has continued to improve her game during the course of the season, and leads all Green Bay freshman averaging 9.5 minutes and 1.7 points per game. The younger of the Phoenix s two Lukans had a career day at Marquette on Dec. 8, scoring six points and grabbing six steals while playing 16 minutes. Lukan played a career-high 20 minutes against St. Bonaventure, scoring three points, grabbing five rebounds and adding three assists. When senior Lydia Bauer attempted a shot from half court with less than three seconds remaining in the first half against the Bonnies, Lukan was there to grab the rebound and was fouled on her putback attempt. She hit one of two at the line, but gained praise from head coach Kevin Borseth for hustling down the court and grabbing the board. Horizon League Heroics: As league play opens tonight, Green Bay looks to continue its success in Horizon League games as it currently leads the nation winning 14 consecutive regular season conference titles. The Phoenix has also captured 11 tournament titles. Under Borseth s leadership from 1998-2007, Green Bay compiled an impressive 125-13 record against Horizon League opponents, which currently ranks second in the league record book. This year s senior class is 26-1 against Horizon League foes on its home court. In the 2012-13 Horizon League preseason poll, the Phoenix was picked to finish first, receiving 25 of a possible 27 first place votes. Detroit was picked to finish second, receiving the two remaining first-place votes. Kress Success: Tonight Green Bay will look to win its 85th overall contest at the Kress Center, as well as its 45th Horizon League game. The Phoenix is 84-6 overall at the Kress Center, and 44-1 in Horizon League contests with the lone loss coming at the hands of Detroit last season. Green Bay began playing at the $32.6 million Kress Center during the 2007-08 season, making this the first year Kevin Borseth has led Green Bay in the arena. 2012-13 Green Bay Roster No. Name Pos. Inside the Matchup Notable Meetings Jan. 28, 1995 Under head coach Carol Hammerle, Green Bay travels to Detroit for the first all-time meeting between the two schools. The Titans squeak out a 60-58 win. Jan. 15, 1998 After falling to Detroit in the MCC Championship game the season prior, Green Bay defeats the Titans 72-55, sparking a 15-game winning streak against Detroit over the next five years. Feb. 12, 2004 Detroit broke up the Phoenix s string of 15 straight wins with a 56-50 overtime win, but Green Bay responded with a 64-54 win at the Phoenix Sports Center, sparking another 15-game winning streak against the Titans. Feb. 9, 2012 In front of a crowd of nearly 3,000 fans at the Kress Center, No. 9/9 Green Bay had four players score in double figures, but couldn t stop freshman Shareta Brown and senior Senee Shearer who posted 24 and 23 points respectively. Detroit came away with a 70-58 victory, snapping Green Bay s program-best 40-game winning streak. It was also the first Horizon League loss for Green Bay at the Kress Center. March 11, 2012 Green Bay rebounded from the home loss to Detroit just over a month prior to defeat the Titans 66-53 in the Horizon League Championship game, advancing to a fourth-straight NCAA tournament appearance. Today s rematch of the 2012 Horizon League Championship game features the top two teams in the 2012-13 Horizon League Preseason Poll. Detroit spoiled Green Bay s program-best 40- game winning streak on Feb. 9, 2012, marking the first time the Phoenix had lost to a Horizon League opponent at the Kress Center. However, Green Bay responded with a 66-53 victory over the Titans in the Horizon League Tournament Championship game just a little more than a month later, sending the Phoenix to a fourth-straight NCAA tournament appearance. The Titans would advance to the 2012 WNIT Tournament, where they fell 59-49 in the first round to Toledo. Notable Connections: Detroit head coach Autumn Rademacher is very familiar with Green Bay, having played for Detroit from 1993-97. She also spent five years on the Green Bay coaching staff as an assistant from the 2003-04 season through the 2007-08 campaign before accepting her current position at Detroit. As a player, Rademacher was a senior on the Titans 1996-97 MCC LAST GAME VS. DETROIT - 2012 HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GREEN BAY 66, Detroit 53 Top-seeded Green Bay cruised through the quaterfinal round of the 2012 Horizon League Championship with a 77-53 win over No. 9 seed Valparaiso, and followed it up with a 73-53 win over fourth-seeded UIC in the semifinal round. The matchup set up a rematch between Green Bay and Detroit, who had upset the Phoenix just over a month prior. In her final game at the Kress Center, senior Julie Wojta had an explosive day, posting a double-double with 29 points and 12 rebounds, including a perfect 4-4 from behind the arc. Redshirt freshman Megan Lukan tallied a career-high 20 points, while Adrian Ritchie added eight points and six rebounds. Kevin Borseth - Greener at Green Bay Tweetable Tidbits Follow @GBPhoenixWBB, @HorizonLeague and @JustinGrones @GBPhoenixWBB enters @HorizonLeague play riding a five-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 8. #gophoenix #HLWBB During the winning streak, @GBPhoenixWBB has allowed opponents to score just 41.0 ppg. #gophoenix #HLWBB @GBPhoenixWBB has dominated the paint this season, outscoring opponents 172-50 over the last five games. #gophoenix #HLWBB On April 5, 2012, Green Bay held a press conference to announce the rehiring of Borseth, a popular and historic move in that it was the first time the program had welcomed back a head coach for a second tenure. Not only did the hiring excite Phoenix fans by welcoming back a legendary coach, but it also lured Borseth away from a job in the Big Ten Conference and in his home state. Borseth spent the past five seasons as the head coach at the University of Michigan, where he compiled an overall record of 87-73. He took over a program that had won just 21 games in the prior three seasons combined and led the Wolverines to 19 wins and a postseason berth in his first season in 2007-08. GREEN BAY 61, St. Bonaventure 42 In yet another display of defensive dominance, Green Bay led by as many as 26 in a win against St. Bonaventure in the final non-conference game of the 2012-13 season. Redshirt junior Breannah Ranger continued to show her improvement as a dominant inside threat off the bench, scoring a career- and game-high 14 points on 70 percent shooting. Senior Lydia Bauer continued to have a hot hand from behind the 3-point line, draining three of five attempts to push her total to 6-of-11 during the past two games. Bauer finished with 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds, while redshirt senior Stephanie Sension put up 12 points. The Phoenix held the Bonnies to just 27.9 percent from the floor, marking the fourth time this season an opponent has not shot 30 percent or higher. The win was also the eight time the Horizon League s best scoring defense has held an opponent to less than 50 points this season.
