TEAM NOTES: Gilles & Poirier teamed up in summer 2011. Gilles grew up in the United States and competed internationally with Timothy McKernan and Zachary Donohue. At the junior level at the U.S. Championships, she has won a pewter medal (4th place) with McKernan, a bronze medal with Donohue, and two silver medals (one with each partner). Poirier competed for ten years with Vanessa Crone, winning the Canadian title in 2011. Crone & Poirier finished as high as seventh at the World Championships (in 2010) and won the 2011 Grand Prix Final bronze medal. They were also 2010 Olympic Team members. Gilles did not compete during the 2010-11 season, taking time off from figure skating training to give acting a try. She considered several options when she decided to return to the sport, but did not find a perfect fit until her tryout with Poirier. Poirier studies linguistics at the University of Toronto.

Orford previously skated with Malcolm Rohon-O'Halloran, finishing seventh at 2010 Skate Canada Junior Nationals. Williams had several partners before Orford, including Olga Lioudvinevitch and Alicia Williams. Williams had decided to take a year off from skating after his partnership with Lioudvinevitch ended in 2010. He had moved back home to Alberta when Orford contacted him for a tryout. When that was successful, he had to make a quick decision to move to Vancouver to skate with her. They medaled at their first JGP event, just four months later. When leaving Russian after 2012 Rostelecom Cup, Orford & Williams were forced to abandon their skates at airport security. They had carried their skates on the plane on the way to Russia, but were stopped on the way home. They were not allowed to return to ticketing to check their skates, as they had already cleared customs. Their skates were mailed to them, but they did not arrive before the team had to leave for NHK Trophy a week later, so they competed in Japan wearing old skates. Williams's boots were held together with duct tape. They skated well and finished fourth.

Poulin previously skated with Simon Mondor. Servant previously skated with Joanna Salvagna and trained in Scarborough, ON. Since Poulin & Servant won the 2012 Canadian junior title, they had to move up to the senior level domestically. However, they continued to skate at the junior level internationally, so they have had the difficult task of preparing two completely different short dances this season. Poulin & Servant broke the Canadian junior record (SD+FD format) at the 2012 Canadian Championships and held it for just over a month, when it was reclaimed by Nicole Orford & Thomas Williams at the 2012 World Junior Championships.

Virtue & Moir are the first Canadian ice dancers to win the Olympic title and the second to win the World title. They have national titles at every level except novice, and they are the only Canadian dance team to have won national titles at four of the five levels. They hold Canadian records for total score in senior dance (both the CD+OD+FD and SD+FD formats) and junior dance (CD+OD+FD format). Virtue underwent surgery on her legs in fall 2008 and fall 2010. Both operations were done to relieve pressure caused by chronic exertional compartment syndrome. During the season after the second surgery, she changed her stroking pattern in order to prevent another relapse. Virtue is a student at the University of Windsor. Moir's family is heavily involved in skating. His older brothers, Charlie and Danny, both skated, as did his cousins. His aunt, Carol Moir, was his and Tessa's first dance coach.
