A New Experience for all Ages Dear Supporter, Welcome to our new credit-crunch-beating 2009 summer brochure. Put the kettle on, settle back in a comfortable chair, enjoy the read and plan your next sailing adventure. New Brochure Layout The summer schedule is busier than ever with opportunities for all ages on both our magnificent Stavros S Niarchos and our Challenger Fleet. We hope the brochure s new layout will make it easier to navigate through the array of different types of voyages. We ve split it into sections, so whether you re 14 or 64 there s a section just for you. The information section has also been much improved to make it more informative and easier to read. New Voyage Grading System We ve also introduced a new voyage grading system. This explains what you can expect from each voyage. From one, for a day sail where no experience is necessary to a five for the Fastnet Race where some sailing experience is required for this full-on racing event. If you re not sure if a voyage is suitable for you, then don t hesitate to call our reservations team who can give you all the advice you need. New Easy Payment Scheme New in 2009 is a great new way to pay for your voyage, as we introducing our Easy Payment Plan by booking at least three months in advance you can split your payment into four easy payments (see page 34 for details). As always our reservations team will be pleased to help arrange an easy payment plan for you. Just give them a call. Finally, I hope you are able to book on a voyage this summer but if you can t get away with us this year, please pass this brochure on to a friend, tell them about Tall Ships Adventures and point them in the direction of our website. Once again thank you for all your support. Have a great summer and good sailing. Tim Law Marketing & Operations Director 2 To book your voyage call now 023 9283 2055 www.tallships.org

Useful Information What s Included Your voyage fee includes: All meals while on board Tea, coffee, squash and biscuits Safety equipment Waterproofs (as required) Sail training Boat transfers ashore (as required) Fun! Airport to vessel transfers for all youth voyages abroad if you join our recommended flight What s not included: On shore excursions and entertainment (i.e. guided tours/restaurant meals/drinks) Flights/ferries to join and leave your voyage Airport/ferry transfers on 18+ voyages Sleeping bags and towels Travel insurance (which is compulsory) Voyage Grading The voyage grading system is to help you pick the experience that you are looking for, not to discourage you from trying whether that is a Day Sail or a Transatlantic. Introduction to sailing on a Brig or Yacht. You will learn the basics of seamanship and get involved with all aspects of life on board. A great experience that should leave you wanting to come back for more. Ideal as a gift for a loved one or friend. No sailing experience necessary. 4 To book your voyage call now 023 9283 2055 www.tallships.org

Useful information Voyage will include sleeping on board and working in a watch system. May visit a foreign port (if voyage starts in the UK). A great way to build on your time on board and work on your seamanship skills. A good stepping stone before going off shore for an extended period. No sailing experience necessary. These voyages are a little more adventurous. You are likely to encounter bigger seas and stronger winds. You will also find these voyages slightly more physically demanding due to the combination of conditions and voyage length. Still no sailing experience necessary. Sailing off shore, out of sight of land is an incredible experience. You will be sailing the Brig or Yacht in a watch system for an extended time which will mean hard physical work and the likelihood of a change of your sleep pattern. A great way to get some miles under your belt. Some sailing experience is helpful but not essential. Primary purpose of the voyage is to race. This will be an exhilarating experience likely to push you physically. As well as improving your sailing knowledge, you will also learn about racing a large yacht. Some sailing experience is required for these voyages. What to Expect As the UK s largest sail training charity we are experts at teaching people who are young and young at heart all about life on board our fleet. As sail trainers we presume you know nothing and teach you all you need to know. You join the voyage as Voyage Crew and get involved with all aspects of sailing the Brig or Challenger. Some overnight voyages will plan to visit a foreign port so you ll need your passport. The voyage itinerary will be decided by the Captain or Skipper depending on the weather and other factors to ensure as much sailing as possible. Your joining and leaving ports will only change if absolutely necessary and you will be informed of any change as soon as possible. You will be encouraged to participate as much as possible but we won t make you do anything that you don t want to do. However, we do expect everyone to take their turn in Happy Hour which is cleaning your ship or yacht. The Voyage Crew will be divided into watches (groups) and under the guidance of your watch leader you will help sail your vessel. Crew structure and becoming a volunteer You will join as Voyage Crew which means you become part of the team onboard who help with all aspects of life while at sea. You will be supported by a combination of salaried crew and volunteers. If you have joined a voyage of five days or more you may be assessed to see if you possess the skills to join us as a volunteer this will be by being recommended at the end of your voyage. If you are recommended you will be able to join voyages as a volunteer to support the next generation of Voyage Crew that sails with us. Where will you go during the voyage? You will find where each voyage starts and finishes in the programme and suggestions of where some of the voyages might visit. However, it is impossible to guarantee where you will go during the voyage as this is very dependant on the weather and other factors. Your Captain or Skipper will keep you up to date with where you are likely to head to during your voyage. We will always endeavour to get in as much sailing as possible while you are on board. Tall Ships Spirit A Tall Ships Adventure is not a holiday in the usual sense of the word it s a unique hands-on experience. You will become an important part of the vessel s crew and this is more than just the sailing it will include food preparation, maintenance and cleaning. You ll work as a team while on board but it s still likely to be tough sometimes. However, you will always be supported by our professional crew and trained volunteers. The Tall Ships Fleet Spectacular Square Rigger Stavros S Niarchos Our square rigged Tall Ship Stavros S Niarchos is a 60 metre Brig (ship with two square rigged masts) designed to sail anywhere in the world. Completed in 2000 by Appledore Shipyard to commercial safety standards, she carries a traditional eighteenth century style rig on a modern hull features that make her so special and great fun to sail. In fact the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has appointed her as an auxillary coastguard vessel afloat in recognition of her safety features, equipment carried and level of training the crew receive. Stavros can take up to a maximum of 69 crew, made up as follows: Salaried Crew Captain, Chief Officer, 2nd Officer, Chief Engineer, Bosun, Cook Volunteer Crew 3rd Officer, FAP (First Aid Purser), Assistant Engineer, 3x Watch Leaders, 2/3 Deck Hands, Cook Assistant and 2 Youth Mentors (only on youth voyages) Voyage Crew 48 (that s you) Please note not all the salaried and volunteer crew positions will be filled on every voyage. What s life like on board? Since Stavros was purpose built she has a modern feel below decks with plenty of showers, air conditioning and heating and a modern fitted galley (kitchen). There is a large Mess (area to eat and socialise) and plenty of space outside. For sleeping there are six cabins with eight bunks in each you will be allocated your own bunk and storage locker. Training Each voyage will start with a thorough safety brief and the start of your training which will fill at least your first day on board. Once you have left port your training will continue throughout your voyage using a combination of practical demonstrations and informative lectures. We will encourage you to try everything while on board but always respect your own limits. Watches (teams) In order to keep Stavros manned 24 hours you will be divided into watches of up to 16. Your watch leader will be responsible for you and teach you how to do things while you are on duty. With the guidance of your watch leader and other members of the crew you will get involved with some or all of the following: Helming (steering) the ship Setting the sails and adjusting them by hauling on ropes as a team Standing watch (looking out for other ships on the bridge) Climbing the masts and going out on the yards (horizontal beams that the sails hang from) Assist the Bosun (person responsible for the deck) Help with the general maintenance on board Assist with the ship leaving and entering port Food The food on board is legendary from the cooked breakfasts to the roast dinners. All meals while on board are included and you will eat with your watch and other members of the crew in the Mess. Tea, coffee, squash and snacks are always available in the Mess. One of the duties you will also have on board is assisting in the galley and helping to serve the food. Free time You will have plenty of time when you are not on watch to relax or to catch up on some sleep. The Mess is the social hub on board where you can catch up with what s been happening during the day. When you come into ports you should be able to explore ashore with a chance to buy souvenirs and stock up on supplies. 6 To book your voyage call now 023 9283 2055 www.tallships.org

Our fleet of four 72ft steel ocean-going yachts were designed by world renowned designer Rob Humphreys and built in 2000. Originally designed to race around the world, they are perfect for sail training as they provide an exciting but extremely safe environment for everyone onboard. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) gave the yachts the highest rating; they have the safety features, equipment and capability to be sailed anywhere in the world. The Challengers can take up to a maximum of 18 crew, made up as follows: Salaried Crew Skipper (occasionally a fully qualified and experienced Volunteer) Volunteer Crew Mate, 2 x Watch Leaders, Cook, Youth Mentor Voyage Crew 12 (that s you) Please note that not all the Volunteer Crew positions will be filled on every voyage. What s life like on board? Considering the Challengers were designed to race around the world, things are pretty comfortable down below comfortable and airy saloon (seating area), well equipped galley (kitchen) and two heads (toilets) with showers. The sleeping area is open plan with snug pipe cots (bunks) and your own storage area. Please note storage is limited so refer to our Voyage Crew Handbook for tips on what to bring. Training Each voyage will start with a thorough safety brief followed by some basic training. Once this has happened you will prepare the yacht for sailing and head out to sea, where your training will continue. We will encourage you to get involved with as much as possible while on board. On many voyages you will be able to work through the RYA Competent Crew syllabus. For most voyages you need no previous sailing experience. Watches The operation and maintenance of the yacht is a 24 hour job to manage this a system of watchkeeping is used. You will be allocated to a watch while on board and while you are on watch you will be involved with all aspects of sailing the yacht, including helming, sail changes, keeping lookout, helping in the galley and Happy Hour (cleaning the yacht). Food All meals on board are included in your voyage. Tea, coffee, juice, snacks and fruit are available on a self service basis. Some voyages will have an allocated cook but you may well have to help in the galley all part of the experience! Free time The watch systems allow you to have plenty of free time. This will give you a chance to catch up on sleep, relax and get to know your fellow Voyage Crew. It is normal that you will visit ports and marinas while on your voyage giving you opportunities to buy souvenirs and learn about different cultures. Insurance *** IMPORTANT *** YOUR TRAVEL INSURANCE Due to legislation governing the sale of insurance products we are no longer able to make direct arrangements for your travel insurance. However, it still remains a requirement of the company that you maintain adequate travel insurance to cover you for your voyage. As a guide you must make sure that any policy you take out covers you for offshore sailing as a working member of a Tall Ship s crew (you must check because not all travel policies cover this activity). Tall Ships Limited have worked with GH Insurance Services Limited and they are able to provide a specialist voyage Tall Ships Travel Insurance Policy specifically designed for Tall Ships crew members. They can be contacted by telephone on 01892 779 539 or e-mail tallships@ghinsurance.com It is company policy that no one will be allowed to join a voyage unless we have a record of their insurance details. We also recommend that you carry your Travel Insurance Documents with you when you join your voyage. We will require the following details before you sail on a Tall Ships Voyage: Your Insurer Policy Number Policy Expiry Date Insurer s Emergency 24 hour Telephone number Prices All inclusive All Tall Ships Voyages (excluding Day Sails) include accommodation, meals, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, squash and biscuits whilst on board. Safety equipment, waterproofs and sailing instruction are also included. They do not include flights, organised excursions, meals ashore, transport to/from ship, departure tax, optional extras, surcharges and insurance. All Tall Ships Day Sails are inclusive of a morning snack, lunch and afternoon tea. Transfers Unless otherwise stated, prices in this brochure exclude the cost of getting to and from the ship (flight/ferry/train costs and transfers between the airport/ferry terminal/station and the ship). Information on how to get to the ship and what time you should be on board will be sent to you with your joining instructions. Transfers 14-15 and 16-25 Voyages: Transfers between the local airport/ferry terminal/station and the ship are included free of charge on youth voyages when flights/ferries are booked through Bath Travel. Flights In conjunction with Bath Travel (01202 761278) Tall Ships Ltd have secured a limited number of pre-booked flights. It is recommended that you book these flights as soon as possible. The benefits are: Secured/preferential prices Flights are coordinated so you join and depart the ship at the right time Early booking secures a guaranteed price Prevents last minute booking which can often mean higher flight prices Group/Business Bookings Tall Ships Ltd are able to tailor our voyages to meet the needs of the corporate/group customer, whether it s a Tall Ship Day, a 4-day Tall Ships Taster or a day out on the Challenger Fleet. These are all great team building/bonding experiences. Regardless of it being a great day out for friends or facilitating a corporate team building voyage, we have the experience to ensure we deliver the very best. Phone the Tall Ships Sales and Marketing Department to discuss your requirements on 023 9283 2055, or email info@tallships.org to order your information pack. Port Surcharges Due to changes in port security legislation, certain ports & port agents have increased their charges to us substantially. Whilst we will try to negotiate these charges down, it may be necessary to pass on to our voyage crew a port surcharge to help us cover some of these extra costs. This surcharge will only be implemented if needed. You will then be informed of the amount by the Tall Ships reservations team before your final payment is due 8 weeks before your voyage starts. Fuel Surcharges Although we are sailing ships and we will always maximise the amount of sailing on your voyage, we still have to operate our engines in order to run our ships. Everything from meeting schedule dates, entering port, running auxiliary services on board such as generators and water making plants need fuel. Unfortunately we are still seeing a dramatic increase in the cost of fuel. We hope that this may not be permanent and therefore rather than passing on this increase to the customer on your voyage fee we have decided to implement a surcharge to cover this increase. This means that it will only be implemented if our fuel costs do not go down. You will be informed of the amount by the Tall Ships reservations team before your final payment is due 8 weeks before your voyage starts. Don t forget to keep a copy of your Booking Form and Conditions of Booking. The fleet is operated by a small complement of permanent crew supported by some 1,300 sailing volunteers from across the UK. The Trust has 5,000 regular volunteers and supporters and a network of 37 Volunteer Support Groups across the UK. Our voyages bring together a multicultural, multinational cross section of young people to work and live together in a physically and mentally challenging environment.
