POWERBAND SPEARGUN INSTINCT CAREFULLY READ THIS INSTRUCTION MANUAL BEFORE USE, AND KEEP IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. INTRODUCTION CONGRATULATIONS - You have chosen one of the most technologically advanced and reliable products available on the market. Your MARES speargun is the result of years of continuing evolution in collaboration with the athletes of our team. It is the maximum expression of MARES's extensive experience in the spearfishing category. Our spearguns are constructed using high technology production processes and materials entirely within our factories. This enables us to check and test all the materials and components for durability and reliability. Impeccable performance, precision, speed, silence and ease of handling make this the speargun of choice for spearfishermen around the world. CAREFULLY READ THIS MANUAL Carefully read the instructions contained in this manual, as they are essential for assuring your own safety and prolonging the life of your equipment. Diving equipment should only be used by persons who have received adequate training. To ensure maximum safety, your equipment should be serviced exclusively by an AUTHORIZED MARES DEALER. In Italy, under art. 18 of Italian Law no. 963/65, the use of spearguns is permitted only to persons older than 16. Please refer to current legislation concerning the use of spearguns by minors in other countries. IMPORTANT Any critical information or warnings that might affect the performance or result in the injury or death of the technician, speargun owner, or other persons are highlighted with the following symbols: DANGER Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. CAUTION Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in minor or moderate injury. It may also be used to alert against unsafe practices. MARES reserves the right to modify any products, processes and manufacturing techniques at any time. It is the technicians' responsibility to acquire the latest information and parts from MARES for service and repairs to be performed. GENERAL TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Ergonomic handle with soft-touch sheath. Dual attachment for shooting line. Hydrodynamic two-piece muzzle with exclusive system for assembling different types of bands (double or circular loop). Extremely sensitive trigger. Partial and removable shaft tracks (depending on the speargun version). Barrel diameter: 28 mm. 16 mm or 19 mm powerbands (depending on the speargun version) in special latex. Stainless steel Tahitian shaft or threaded steel with spear head (depending on the speargun version). Stainless steel articulated wishbone or spring wishbone (depending on the speargun version). Speargun positively buoyant without shaft. Chest loading pad as standard (depending on the speargun version). Automatic side line-releaser (Fig. 2). Fittings for line reel (depending on the speargun version). HANDLE (FIG. 1) Ergonomic and adaptable to left- or right-handed use and to every size of hand, including when wearing thick gloves, and to all firing styles (using first or second finger joint). LOADING PAD Loading a speargun can demand considerable effort, especially when using the second shaft tab for maximum power. During this operation, it is important for the speargun to be optimally positioned against the chest. Our loading pad offers the ideal solution for a secure and comfortable loading rest. If desired, the loading pad can be replaced with the special end piece for Instinct spearguns, by means of a very quick and simple operation: 1. Remove the rubber handle by pulling it from the butt of the gun; in case of difficulty, heat the part in warm water (40 C) and try again. (Fig. A-1). 2. Fully remove the metal pin. (Fig. A-2). 3. Remove the loading pad by first rotating and then pulling it out as indicated in the figure (Fig. A-3). 4. Assemble the new component by inserting it first from the end with the locking tab on top, and then rotating to snap it in place. (Fig. A-4). 5. Reassemble the pin removed previously. 6. Fit the rubber handle back on the speargun. SAFETY CATCH The Instinct speargun features a patented safety catch which, in addition to providing a mechanical locking mechanism, also physically prevents the finger from reaching the trigger (Fig. 3) when engaged. This means there is never any doubt as to whether the safety catch is engaged. In the firing position, the safety catch lever retracts out of the way into a special compartment (Fig. 4). The safety catch can be operated using either the right or left hand, irrespectively. Do not attempt to remove or tamper with the safety catch, as this can compromise your safety and that of others. MARES is not responsible for accidents to persons or property arising from products that have been tampered with. MUZZLE Innovative patented muzzle- your speargun comes with a double powerband as standard (Fig. 11), but also includes a special seat for installing an optional supplementary loop band. One advantage of the Instinct versus other spearguns on the market, is that the muzzle can be converted to only accommodate loop bands (Fig. 14). With a simple operation that takes just a few minutes, you can adapt the speargun to the preferred system yourself. The muzzle consists of two separate hinged sections, held together by means of a screw: fully back off this screw (Fig. 12) to remove the double-band attachment (Fig. 13), and the seat for a loop band will be left in its place. The geometry of the loop band attachment (which accommodates 16 to 20 mm diameters) is designed to always clamp the bands at the center point, so as to hold them in place without damage. After assembly, simply stretch the bands once to position them correctly. BARREL SEAL (HANDLE END AND MUZZLE END) One of the most common causes of a speargun flooding is the OR seal, which can be damaged during insertion through the side fixing hole of the barrel. 3

Your speargun features a new barrel sealing system (patented) which prevents the OR from being damaged in this way during assembly/disassembly. The screw of this system is also used for fixing the barrel itself. SHAFT TRACK On a traditional speargun, when the wishbone engages the tab at the top of the shaft, it tends to pull downward on the shaft, causing it to flex. At the moment of firing, the shaft is released from the pressure of the wishbone and reverts to its original straight-line shape. This passage from a curved to rectilinear shape creates a wave which slows down the spearhead and alters its trajectory. Our shaft track, running along the top of the barrel, provides the support required by the shaft, guiding it along the most critical points. A particularly important point is that the shaft moves inside the track without friction, because it is hydrodynamically cushioned by a thin film of water. Using coupled powerbands makes it possible to insert a metal bridge on the muzzle to prevent the shaft from releasing accidentally. POWERBANDS Our spearguns are supplied, depending on the model, with bands made from pure natural latex. Thanks to the material and the special production process, these bands retain their elasticity up to the breaking point (machine elongation test) and deteriorate (splitting and drying) 3 to 4 times less quickly under equal conditions of use; what's more, they provide unparalleled thrust and retain their power longer over time. PRECAUTIONS Before using the speargun, always check the following: Check the correct operation of the firing system, including the safety catch. Check that the powerbands are correctly screwed onto the ends of the muzzle and/or wishbone. Check that the powerbands are in good condition: in particular check for signs of cracking, damage or splitting, and make sure they are not coming apart at the ends. If this is the case, replace them immediately. Check that the wishbone pins are firmly secured, and that the wishbone itself does not show signs of wear. Check that the shooting line is correctly fixed to the end of the speargun and to the spearshaft (Fig. 5). After use, and before putting the speargun away, always fit the tip protector on the spearshaft (Fig. 6). In the event of a malfunction, do not attempt to repair the speargun yourself, but immediately consult an AUTHORIZED MARES DEALER or send it directly to MARES. MARES IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCIDENTS TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY ARISING FROM TAMPERING, IMPROPER USE OR INADEQUATE MAINTENANCE OF PRODUCTS. Fully wind up the shooting line between the muzzle and the line-releaser as shown in figure 7. On the last turn, the elastic on the line (Fig. 9) should need to extend slightly to hook onto the line-releaser (Fig. 10). Alternatively, you can wind the line as shown in Fig. 15. Do not thread the cord as shown in figure 8. There is a chance it could get caught when shooting! LOADING IN THE WATER Check that the safety catch is engaged (Fig. 3). Rest the butt of the speargun against your chest. Pull the powerband toward you until the wishbone "V" hooks onto either the first or second tab on the spearshaft. OPTIONAL SECOND POWERBAND If desired, you can purchase an additional loop powerband from an AUTHORIZED MARES DEALER. To assemble the loop band, fully back off the screw underneath the muzzle (Fig. 12), then open the hinge of the muzzle (Fig. 13) and assemble the powerband in its seat. Extend the powerband slightly in position as shown and close the muzzle; then fully lock down the screw. At this point, release the tension on the band. Follow the loading instructions provided above. OPTIONAL METAL BRIDGE To mount the metal bridge, unscrew both powerbands, position the bridge as in Fig. 16, and then retighten the powerbands. UNLOADING THE SPEARGUN (WITHOUT FIRING) Always unload the speargun while you are still in the water. Make sure there are no other people around within range of the speargun. Check that the safety catch is engaged. Rest the butt of the speargun against your chest. Pull the band toward you and disengage the wishbone "V" from the tab of the spearshaft. If the speargun is equipped with a second powerband, repeat the above procedure. MAINTENANCE Rinse the speargun with fresh water after each use. Do not keep the speargun in sealed cases or containers; it should be stored in a well-aired place. ALL SERVICE AND MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS SHOULD BE CARRIED OUT BY AN AUTHORIZED MARES DEALER. LOADING THE SPEARGUN NEVER LOAD OR FIRE THE SPEARGUN OUTSIDE THE WATER. NEVER FIRE IN AREAS OF POOR VISIBILITY, OR IN THE DIRECTION OF OTHER PEOPLE OR STATIONARY OBJECTS. FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS CAUTION COULD RESULT IN INJURY TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS, WITH POTENTIALLY SERIOUS DAMAGE. NEVER TRANSPORT THE SPEARGUN WHILE LOADED. PRE-DIVE PROCEDURE Engage the safety catch (Fig. 3). Slide the shaft (with the attached line) along the track from the muzzle end, inserting it into the handle with the tabs facing upward. Push the shaft toward the handle until it clicks into place. Check that the shaft is correctly engaged: if it is not, pull the shaft out of its seat in the handle, and fully depress the trigger to re-arm the mechanism. Insert the shaft back into its seat in the handle until it clicks into place. 4
