Pageant Information Packet and Application MISSION: The mission of Miss Southwest Navajo is to promote, present and be an ambassador for the Southwestern Navajo Fair from a traditional Navajo worldview and perspective. Additionally, Miss Southwest Navajo is a role model for our Navajo youth and elderly woman, a motivation speaker, mentor, and most importantly, Diné Asdzaan Neeshliigoo Sa ah Naagh Bikihozhoon Naashaadoo (Walk in beauty, harmony and respectful as a Navajo woman). ELIGIBILITY: NO alcohol, drugs, and non- Native traditional tobacco use Must be between the ages of 13-18, single, never married and no dependents Violation and misrepresentation of Miss Southwest Navajo may result in a resignation of the crown and title. The crown and title will be passed onto the 1 st and/or 2 nd Attendant as deem fit by the Southwestern Navajo Fair Inc. Board. ROLES & RESPONSIBILITY: Dress in traditional Navajo attire at all times when wearing the crown. Respect the title as though it were a living entity and bundle for our Southwest Navajo communities. We expect that you will return the crown fully polished and restored new when your reign is complete. The Miss Southwest Navajo crown is the property of the Southwestern Navajo Fair Inc. o At any time shall the reigning Miss Southwest Navajo retain the crown after she has completed her duties as Miss Southwest Navajo. o If the reigning Miss Southwest Navajo decides to keep the crown, there will be a charge for the crown that includes the price of silver, turquoise, and labor for a new crown. You will present yourself at all time in a professional matter, be respectful, be honest, and have integrity when attending public events/meetings. You will be asked to promote the Miss Southwest Navajo and communicate publicly your PLATFORM. Communicate, plan, and schedule events with your coordinators. Keep all informed to make sure you are doing okay. Funds solicited by the coordinators is an effort to plan for any expenses that you may need for traveling, lodging or entry fees. Depending on the budget, funds will be dispersed when needed. The goal is to support Miss Southwest Navajo throughout the year; however, the reigning Miss Southwest Navajo will also need to plan for fundraising. Funds will have to be raised both by coordinators and the reigning Miss Southwest Navajo for the following year s pageant. Collaboration is expected with the Southwestern Navajo Fair Inc. to schedule three (3) fundraising events throughout the year.

Photos taken by the Southwestern Navajo Fair Inc. are the property of Miss Southwest Navajo and the Southwestern Navajo Fair Inc. Any use of photos or design by this organization is copyrighted. You must get permission before using it for any other reasons. YEARLY ACTIVITIES: The following are expected events you must participate in: 1. SOUTHWESTERN NATION FAIR: You are expected to attend every event during the Southwestern Navajo Fair. This is a great promotion and mandatory representation for the organization. A schedule will be provided. Please be on time and ready for our fair and parade. You will be first in line at the parade. 2. FUNDRAISING: You are expected to have three (3) small or one (1) major fundraising event. You or the coordinators can coordinate this. Advance planning will be to your/our advantage for the overall success. 3. CHAPTER HOUSE EVENTS: Our local chapters will be funding to the annual fair and pageant so please make every effort to attend events at each chapter. An appearance at Dilkon, Teesto, Indian Wells, White Cone, Greasewood, Leupp, Tolani Lake, Birdsprings and Jeddito is very important. 4. SCHOOL EVENTS: Attending local school events is vitally important when recruiting future Miss Southwest Navajos and the teaching of your platform. Please take time to arrange for appearances at the following schools: Dilcon Community School, Seba Dalkai School, Greasewood Community School, Indian Wells Elementary School, Little Singer, Leupp School and Cedar Public School in Jeddito. Also make appearance at the Residential Halls in Holbrook and Winslow. Contact the principal, vice principal and/or school counselor to schedule a presentation as part of cultural day or other activities during the school year. 5. OTHER EVENTS: Veterans Day events, Pageants, other state fair parades, local parades and holiday events.

CONTESTANT PREPARATION: You will be judged in the following categories during the pageant. Presentation and translation in Navajo is critical and you will receive extra points for your efforts in presenting in Navajo. We understand many of our generation of youth do not speak Navajo, however, it is not too late to begin learning. Never say you don t know how. It takes practice, commitment, effort, and passion to make something happen in your life. 1. Mandatory Etiquette Session: Will be held on Thursday evening September 19 at 5:00 p.m. The session will consist of: First Impressions/Body language; Introductions and handshakes; what is self- esteem? (for young adults); Interviews (for young adults); Positive thinking; Manners and Posture while attending events 2. Mandatory Presentation: Singing of the Flag Song in Navajo and Pledge of Allegiance in Navajo. Both of these introductions are normally asked of Royalties when they attend various events so we would like you to be prepared. 3. Traditional Presentation: (5-10 minutes) You will have 2 minutes to set up and up to 10 minutes to complete your presentation. Traditional means a presentation that is culturally representative of whom you are as a Navajo role model. 4. Modern Presentation: (5-10 minutes) You will have 2 minutes to set up and up to 10 minutes to complete your presentation. We live in two worlds (traditional and western). A modern talent is something other than a traditional presentation. Dance, musical instrument, comedy, etc. Be creative and prepared. No lip- syncing. 5. Written Essay Presentation of Platform: (10 minutes) A platform communicates your expertise, your message to our people, your teachings from a Navajo culture, language, your goal as Miss Southwest Navajo.
