A MESSAGE FROM SURFING AUSTRALIA S CEO Surfing Australia is very excited about the progress at Surfing Tasmania over the past year. We have been working closely with Surfing Tasmania including the funding of the first paid administrator in Shayne Clark. We believe this was a critical step and one that will ensure the organisation grows sustainably into the future. Along with the administration overhaul we have also been supportive of the recent governance review that effectively brings Surfing Tasmania up to speed with all others states. We welcome the new Surfing Tasmania board and wish them well for success ahead. We were excited to announce the Be the Influence Australian Boardriders Battle including a Tasmania State Qualification event that will qualify one lucky Tasmanian club for the national final being held on Australia Day weekend 2014 in Cronulla, NSW. EXECUTIVE OFFICERS-2013 SEASON REPORT Tasmania s 2012/13 competition season started with the Soundwave Australian Junior Surfing Titles at Nubeena on the Tasman Peninsula in late November. Around this event were the visits by former World Champion, Barton Lynch, kindly assisted by Sport and Recreation funding, and National Coaching Director, Martin Dunn who both worked with our new crew of juniors. This huge event was only made possible thanks to the awesome efforts of Surfing Tasmania s Lee Schulze, her committee and President Tank Gray who put in many months of work to secure, plan and run the event. Many thanks also to Surfing Australia and Surfing Victoria for their assistance with infrastructure and personnel. This event also heralded a restructuring of Surfing Tasmania s administration with a Board of Directors, Representative Committee and a part time Executive Officer funded by Surfing Australia. With this new structure quickly came a fresh competitive format with a new and popular Under 21 Division, first SUP Championship and new boardrider clubs at Park Beach and the North West coast bringing in more than two hundred new club members. The competition season kicked off in February with the popular South Coast Junior event in tricky but competitive conditions at Eaglehawk Neck where Tassie s new young crew, fresh from the National Titles at Nubeena, showed they were on the rise. Bruny Island was the location for event two and continued the great tradition of Bruny with two days of very good small to medium waves from start to finish. The March long weekend saw the prestigious Rip Curl West Coast Classic deliver a best ever event with off shore north east winds and air temperatures in the high twenties plus very warm 20 degree water, not to mention wonderful waves at the majestic Mount Cameron. The east coast was the venue for the last three ranking events and began with the annual Paul Johannesen Memorial in April at the legendary Swanport River mouth. Waves poured through all day making another memorable event for 2013. Nigel Wallace saw off his popular 17 th Rip Curl East Coast Junior event in May as Contest Director, announcing his retirement to the big crew of kids and families at Scamander. The final event of the 2013 series, the Quiksilver/Roxy East Coast Classic, delivered a classic battle to the end with Ben Richardson scrapping home in challenging conditions at Ring Rock. The first Tasmanian SUP Championships were held in fabulous mid June sunshine at Four Mile Beach and herald a new era in Tassie surfing. Standout performers for 2013 included young Lizzy Stokely s awesome effort winning the U/16, U/18, U/21 and Open Women s, Ben Richardson retaining his Open title and Ned Bramich showing his skill and power to win the U/18 and U/21 Titles.
