From the Editor Happy New Year folks. We hope that you have had a good re-charge of the battery s, spoiled yourselves a bit and are rearing to rip into 2017! This year the Club has a good mix of events looming and life is too short to not consider some of them to get the adrenalin pumping. Some of you may have noticed that we have a new website, which is our provider s new platform. A bit more user friendly, it can now be found at www.nelsoncarclub.co.nz Please ensure that you go to the NEWS tab, and to the right click on email me notices. That way you will be kept up to date via email of what is going on. Also another good way of keeping up with things Motorsport is via some Groups on Face Book. NZ Rallying History which is pretty self-explanatory and widely used, full of those that competed during the 70 s-90 s. Lots of debate recently on the famous Masport Escorts (locally owned by Colin Knapp and Ashton Wood), with ex works driver Jim Donald correcting everyone. Most people I know through Rallying are on the Rallyflow New Zealand group, which is general stuff. From Auto-x right up to the latest on Hayden Paddon. Dedicated groups for Mainland Rally series exist, but really everything seems to go through Rallyflow. Upshot is as well as young enthusiasts it is chocker with those that competed way back and if you have a genuine interest are missing out. Enjoy the year and hope to see some of you out and about. Presidents Blurb Where did 2016 go? Oh well, if it is 2017, we might as well dive into it with both feet, and see if we can have as much fun this year as we did last year. Our biggest event for the 2016, the Phil Fiddymount Memorial Rallysprint, was a full on day, with 26 competitors, and luckily the rain dried up just in time. Although we had a few issues with the timing gear (yes, again) and had to resort to the timeclocks (with their own problems) most people seemed to have a good day. We believe that the issues with the timing gear are now sorted, but now need to test it at an event to be sure (Dry Weather Road will be the test event). We got enough volunteers to run the rallysprint, but only just, and it became obvious during the event, that there was a significant lack of event knowledge by our volunteers. To stop this happening in the future, we are endeavouring to provide some training, and this will be advertised when the details have been sorted out. It was also noted that some drivers continued at high speed straight past red flags (a red flag indicates that the race has been suspended, and drivers should slow down, drive with caution, and be prepared to stop), thus endangering both themselves and the vehicle that was stranded ahead of them. Some training is obviously required here too. We also got a good turnout to the Kohatu Multi-event day, with 19 competitors. After having to postpone the event due to the enormous amount of rain predicted (and received) on the original date, the weather was on our side, allowing a three circuits of motorkhana, and three runs of autocross. In between the two events was lunch, including some hot bbq fare provided by Phil Lash and cooked by Gary Adcock awesome, thanks guys! The Special General Meeting was held prior to the Kohatu event. The proposed amendments to membership fees were voted in, and will take effect in the upcoming membership renewal. The 2017/2018 forms are already available on the club website. I am constantly told by less confident drivers (especially women) that they couldn t participate in any of our basic events with everyone watching. They are concerned at the negative judgements that they believe they would receive if they don t achieve a certain, un-identified, level of ability right from the start. I tell them that this doesn t happen. However, I found out after one of the recent events that this was indeed happening. Rather than criticising others, it would be NELSON CAR CLUB MAGAZINE SUMMER 2017 Page 5
better to approach a beginner driver with suggestions of techniques to try. A little positive direction may be enough to change a new member into a NZ champion! The Xmas BBQ was an enjoyable gathering, with a bit of added hilarity as we all sought shelter under two gazebos when unpredicted heavy rain tried to foil our fun. The conversations were varied, and most of the problems of the world (and rally cars) were resolved, as kids raced around, other groups came and went, and food and drink was consumed. Thank you to Tony Coakley for providing some samples of the Anchorage Wines that he is involved in creating. I was disappointed that none of the regular drives of advanced events turned up as volunteers at the Redwoods Road Sealed 400 sprint. The members that can compete in this event are the same ones that are generally doing the volunteering at the more advanced events, yet there was no interest in reciprocating this. Without volunteers (both to organise, and on the day), none of us can compete! We all need to have our turn at helping to run events that we cannot drive in! HELP NEEDED 2017 NELSON CAR CLUB CLUBSPORT RALLY - JULY 9 th 2017 GREAT NEWS!! The Nelson Car Club is to run a Club Mans Rally on the 9 th July 2017 and this is to be a round of the Mainland Championship. WOW it s great to have a rally in Nelson again. However to run a rally like this, successfully, we need marshals and more marshals; we are not responsible for timing as this will be managed by Rallysafe and co-ordinated by Chrissport but we will need start line and finish line marshals and a variety of others at strategic spots. We NEED club members, and other enthusiasts, to help; it is only a one day rally, it ll be very exciting and will be run around the Tapawera area. Please help so we can make this the best rally in the series; we will run some training sessions prior to the day. Contact Jim Gregory or Rob McKenzie to confirm your assistance. Thanks NELSON CAR CLUB MAGAZINE SUMMER 2017 Page 7

Kohatu Park Kohatu Park Autocross and Motokhana. Nov 20 2016 After the first attempt of this event was postponed due to rain I looked forward to the clubs first visit to Kohatu Park. The drive in would have been fun if I wasn t dragging a trailer and chasing a portaloo. We were lead thru a small paddock to a cleared area for parking, only to discover the small paddock was to be the motokhana site!! Pretty sure if opened both doors could touch the surrounding fences, luck I ve got a small front wheel drive car, almost felt sorry for the Musk s in their big rear wheel drive toys. A good variety of cars (Lancia; Toyota; Imp; BMW; Fiat; Honda; Mitsubishi; Citroen; Subaru,) appeared in the pits with keen drivers and service crews. No carnage was inflected on any fences or cars though a few of us got very close to the odd post and occasional the time keepers were seen to move from the finish line as cars came thru fast and loose on the grass. After a BBQ lunch, we moved on to the Autocross On the other side of the road was a bigger paddock the Gary Adcock had mowed a couple of tracks with the warning NOT to take any short cuts as there were a few discarded tyres and rocks hiding in the long grass. We got the chance to do three runs and as the afternoon progressed so did most people times, unfortunately my little Fiat decided to misbehave with carb issues so posted the slowest time of the day. Oh, for the next event at Kohatu Park. Cheers Tony NELSON CAR CLUB MAGAZINE SUMMER 2017 Page 10

Hanmer Rally 2016 The 2016 Water View Cars Royce Watson memorial rally in Hanmer drew 63 starters plus crews including Phil Lash/Jeff Sara, Phill Collins/Tracey Spark and yours truly Jim Gregory/Tony Palmer. The weather was warm and dry which made for very dusty conditions indeed. There were 7 stages and 64.64km of rough windy stretches and a ford at the end with casualties along the way. Out of the 63 starters there were 52 that finished with 11 DNFs due to mechanical faults and roll overs. Matt Summerfield was 1st overall with completed time of 39.05.1min NELSON CAR CLUB MAGAZINE SUMMER 2017 Page 16
