Owen is one of just five players in the Ohio Valley Conference to rank in the top-10 in the league in batting average (.411, fifth), slugging percentage (.711, third) and onbase percentage (.466, eighth). The only Skyhawk to have started all 23 games, Owen accounts for 10 multi-hit outings this season, including five straight to begin the month of March. He also tallied a 13-game hitting streak earlier this season and a four-hit game against Air Force on March 16. Owen ranks second in program history in career homers (33) and is only 10 hits shy of joining UT Martin s 200-hit club. LEADING OFF The University of Tennessee at Martin baseball team will look for its fourth win in five games when it takes on the Lipscomb Bisons of the Atlantic Sun Conference at Skyhawk Field. The Skyhawks have made the best of their homestand, capturing three victories in four games - including a Ohio Valley Conference series win over Tennessee Tech over the weekend. In their four-game homestand, the Skyhawk offense has posted a.406 on-base percentage, while the pitching staff has combined for a 5.25 ERA. A trio of players are hitting.400 or better on the homestand, as Jordan Owen (.462), Grant Glasser (.438) and Nico Zych (.400) have paced the offense. Meanwhile, seven pitchers have posted an ERA of 2.25 or lower - including Carter Smith (2-0 in a team-high eight innings). Dating back to 2006, the Skyhawks are 4-1 against Lipscomb in games played at Skyhawk Field. UT Martin is expected to start redshirt junior Brendan Lozupone against the Bisons. The 6-1 southpaw will be making his sixth start of the season (tied for the team lead), as he has allowed two or less earned runs in four of his six appearances in 2012. Lipscomb is coming off a three-game home sweep over Mercer this past weekend. This game will be the Bisons third game against an OVC opponent this season (lost 9-8 at Tennessee Tech on Feb. 28, lost 12-7 at home to Austin Peay on March 20). During its three game sweep last week, Zak Messer led Lipscomb with seven hits, seven RBI and five runs scored. Aaron Sandoval (six hits, five RBI) and ML Williams (six hits, four runs scored) also heavily contributed to the Bisons offensive attack. Redshirt freshman Will Blalock (0-1, 3.77 ERA) is listed as Lipscomb s probable starting pitcher. In 14.1 innings spread out over five appearances (four starts), he has conceded 18 hits while fanning a dozen.

HEAD COACH BUBBA CATES 14TH SEASON AT UTM 23RD OVERALL DELTA STATE, 1982 Victor Bubba Cates begins his 14th season at the helm of the UT Martin baseball program and his 23rd year of college coaching in 2012. The Skyhawks are coming off a historical 2011 campaign under Cates, as the Skyhawks reached the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for the first time since 1996 after tying a program-record with 10 wins (including seven of eight during one stretch) in league play. While at the tournament in nearby Jackson, UT Martin produced its first OVC Tournament victory with a 6-2 victory over Eastern Kentucky on May 26. Following the season, UT Martin s Trey Karlen became the first Skyhawk chosen in the MLB Draft since 1998, as the Washington Nationals selected Karlen in the 33rd round. Cates also found a diamond in the rough with Phil Sorensen in 2011. The freshman from Erie, Pa. was named a Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, while also earning All-OVC first team and All-Freshman accolades. The only freshman on the All-OVC first team, Sorensen hit.347 with a.547 slugging percentage in 49 games. Cates also oversaw the finishing touches on the careers of three all-time greats in 2011. Cody Terry ended his career as the program s all-time leader in games played (199), hits (226), at-bats (750), doubles (47), runs scored (145) and assists (555). Wes Patterson finished his career as one of only three players in program history to accumulate 200 career hits, while graduating as the all-time UT Martin leader in home runs (39), runs batted in (171) and putouts (1,293). The aforementioned Karlen also wrapped up his two-year career as the only player in program history to have 20 or more home runs (23) and 50 or more stolen bases (51). It was a big year for Cates on and off the field in 2010. On the field, he posted one of his best seasons at UT Martin, as he willed the Skyhawks to 24 wins - the most the program had tallied since 1992. UT Martin also produced a program-record six All-OVC selections under Cates in 2010, a year in which the Skyhawks shattered 11 team records and produced a Major League Baseball free agent signee (Wes Alsup). Off the field, Cates was the recipient of the 2010 Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). One of the highest honors in the coaching profession, the award is named after Jerry Kindall, the former major league player and retired head coach at the University of Arizona. The success in 2010 was a continuation of 2009, when Cates set a new school record for OVC wins with 10. Overall, Cates has had four 20-win seasons at UT Martin, including three consecutive seasons (21 in 2009, 24 in 2010, 20 in 2011). Widely respected in the baseball circles, Cates is dedicated to sustaining a successful program at the university for many years to come. He came to UT Martin from Jackson State Community College where he built a successful program during a nine-year period. While at Jackson State, Cates developed the Generals into a nationally ranked program. The 1996 team recorded a sixth-place finish in the Junior College World Series and the 1997 and 1998 teams were also ranked nationally in the junior college polls. The team advanced to the Tennessee Junior College playoffs six consecutive seasons. Cates overall record at Jackson State was 255-161. In addition to the FCA award he received in December 2010, Cates has received several coach of the year honors. He was the National Junior College Athletic Association Region VII and Eastern District Coach of the Year in 1996 and the Tennessee Junior College Western Division Coach of the Year in 1997. Cates received his 25-year Coaching Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2009. Under Cates, Jackson State was one of only three junior colleges from across the nation that had an All-American every year from 1993-98. Cates had 52 of his Jackson State players to move on and play in four-year programs. His players also enjoyed academic success with 12 receiving All-TJCCAA academic honors. Before moving to Jackson State, Cates was head baseball coach at Kirby High in Memphis. He also taught mathematics at the school. A native of Cleveland, Miss., Cates played college baseball for former Boston Red Sox pitcher and legendary coach Dave Boo Ferris and the nationally ranked Delta State program. Cates holds both his bachelor s and master s degrees in mathematics from Delta State. He is active in the FCA and is a member of both the Tennessee and American Baseball Coaches Associations and has worked as an associate scout for the Seattle Mariners organization. Cates is married to the former Ann Simmons of Hammond, La., also a Delta State graduate. They are the parents of three sons: Lin, Reid and Cameron. Along with his baseball duties, Cates teaches in the UT Martin mathematics and computer science department.

DIAMOND CUTS UTM CLAIMS OVC OPENING SERIES By taking two of three against Tennessee Tech on March 23-25, the Skyhawks won their Ohio Valley Conference opening series for the first time since 2006. CHICKS DIG THE LONG BALL UT Martin trailed 5-0 after the top of the second inning before a 1:56 rain delay on March 23 against Tennessee Tech. After play resumed, the Skyhawks launched a season-high four homers and won 6-5. PRODUCTION FROM TOP TO BOTTOM The Skyhawks tallied a season-high 13 runs against Tennessee Tech on March 25. Each spot in the UT Martin lineup either scored or drove in a run in the victory. EXPLOSIVE THIRD INNING VS. CBU UT Martin sent 15 batters to the plate in a 10-run third inning against Christian Brothers on March 20. The 10 runs wound up being one shy of the program record for runs scored in a single inning (11 runs against Chicago State on Feb. 28, 1997). OWEN GUNNING FOR RECORD BOOK Senior outfielder Jordan Owen can become UT Martin s all-time leader in each of the following categories with the appropriate numbers in 2012: games played (50); at-bats (208); hits (69); doubles (16); home runs (13) and RBI (66). Owen is second on the career home run list (33) and fourth on the career RBI list (124). He needs 10 hits to become one of four Skyhawk players to reach 200 hits. PITCHING WITH A SPECIAL TALENT Freshman left-handed pitcher Carter Smith has one hand, emulating former Major Leaguer Jim Abbott. In his collegiate debut on Feb. 25 against Butler, Smith was flawless - allowing just one hit (a bunt single) and one walk in four shutout innings to earn the mound victory. Smith also earned a mound victory against Christian Brothers on March 20, tallying three scoreless innings while allowing only one hit. Five days later, Smith tallied careerhighs in innings pitched (5.0) and strikeouts while allowing only two runs to pick up the win over OVC rival Tennessee Tech. FOUR HIT DAYS AT THE DISH After UT Martin did not have a four-hit performance in its first 14 games of the season, three players accomplished the feat in a span of four games. Freshman Nico Zych went 4-for-4 at Indiana State on March 10. Three days later at Evansville, sophomore Phil Sorensen also went 4-for-4. Against Air Force on March 16, senior Jordan Owen went 4-for-5. MULTI-HIT SKYHAWKS AGAINST UALR A total of six Skyhawks recorded multihit outings on March 4 against Arkansas- Little Rock. Jordan Owen, Hunter Britcliffe and Sonny Mastromatteo each had three hits while Matt Young, Wade Collins and Ben Brewer also added two hits apiece. Mills, Taylor Cox (one inning) and Dan Tobik (two) combined for the 5-0 shutout. That was UT Martin s first shutout since a 5-0 win over Tennessee Tech on April 26, 2008 a span of 180 games. TOBIK COMING OUT OF THE BULLPEN Junior right-hander Dan Tobik is moving back to the bullpen this season. He posted a 3.63 ERA in 67 innings in a setup role as a freshman, then successfully converted to the team s staff ace in 2011, leading the OVC with 91 innings pitched. Tobik has been outstanding so far in 2012, posting a 2.55 ERA in 24.2 innings, allowing only 21 hits with 27 strikeouts. FORMER SKYHAWKS IN PRO BALL Skyhawk alumni Wes Alsup (2009-10) and Trey Karlen (2010-11) are both currently with Major League Baseball franchises. Alsup signed with the Seattle Mariners in January and Karlen was drafted by the Washington Nationals last June.
