Heading into the weekend, the participating teams have fared as below: UCF in the WNIT: 2 appearances (2-2) Cincinnati in the WNIT: 7 appearances (2-9) UConn in the NCAA Tournament: 30 appearances (117-18) Houston in the WNIT: 5 appearances (1-6) USF in the NCAA Tournament: 6 appearances (3-6) Featured in the Final Four Friday will mark UConn s 11th-consecutive appearance in the Final Four and 16th trip all-time. In national semifinal and championship games, the Huskies sport an 11-7 all-time record. With two more victories, UConn would collect its 99th and 100th wins, respectively, as the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Rivalry Repeat UConn and Notre Dame will meet for the second time this season, as the Huskies captured an 80-71 win over the then-no. 3/2 Irish on Dec. 3. It took a comeback for UConn to earn the win, trailing by double-digits in the final quarter until Azura Stevens registered 10 points to keep UConn in contention. The contest marked the last time the Huskies trailed at halftime in a game this season and is one of just two single-digit wins for UConn this season. All-time, UConn owns a 35-11 advantage against Notre Dame while Friday s winner will hold the NCAA Tournament series advantage with the margin even at 3-3. Back to the Bearcats On March 28, Cincinnati introduced Michelle Clark- Heard as the ninth head coach in program history. Clark-Heard returns to the Bearcats after serving as an assistant with the program from 2002-05, and most recently spent the past six seasons as the head coach at Western Kentucky. With the Hilltoppers, Clark-Heard collected a 154-47 record, six-straight 20-win seasons and six-straight postseason appearances. Rocking the Records The top overall seed, UConn, lived up to the billing in the First Round of the NCAA Championship, dismantling No. 16 Saint Francis (Pa.) 140-52. The Huskies set the following NCAA records: Points in an Tournament game (140) Points in a quarter (55 in first) Points in a half (94 in first) Rebounds in a Tournament game (69) Assists in a Tournament game (38) Additionally, UConn earned American Athletic Conference single-game records in the following: Points (140) Made field goals (59 Attempted field goals (91) Total rebounds (69) Total assists (38) Postseason - Looking Back The conference enjoyed tremendous postseason success in 2016-17. UConn advanced to its 10th straight Final Four while six total teams UCF, UConn, USF, SMU, Temple and Tulane half the conference - were selected for postseason play. UCF and SMU were chosen for the WNIT in their first seasons under Katie Abrahamson-Henderson and Travis Mays, respectively, while Tulane tied a program record by advancing to the third round of the same event. In every year since The American s inception, the conference has placed five or more teams in postseason competition (NCAA, WNIT). Husky Repeat UConn s Katie Lou Samuelson joined former teammate Breanna Stewart as the second player in American Athletic Conference history to earn Player of the Year accolades in back-to-back years. Stewart was the league s top honoree in The American s first three seasons. All-Tournament Team Three UConn Huskies, including Crystal Dangerfield, Katie Lou Samuelson, and Gabby Williams, and two USF Bulls, Maria Jespersen and Kitija Laksa, were tabbed as The American s All-Tournament Team after March 6 s Championship game. UConn s Azura Steves was named the Most Oustanding Player after leading the Huskies with 16.3 points and 9.7 rebounds over three games. National Notoriety Three American Athletic Conference players, Kitija Laksa of USF, Katie Lou Samuelson of UConn, and Jasmyne Harris of Houston, have been recognized as either ES- PNW or USBWA National Players of the Week this season. Laksa has gathered the honor twice - Dec. 17 (US- BWA) and Feb. 11 (both) - with Harris (ESPNW) earning the accolade on Jan. 8 and Samuelson (both) on Feb. 19. Dailey Selected to Women s Basketball Hall UConn associate head women s basketball coach Chris Dailey was selected as a member of the 2018 Women s Basketball Hall of Fame Class on Feb. 12. She becomes the fifth UConn honoree, and has been head coach Geno Auriemma s top assistant for his entire 33-year tenure. The duo has overseen the UConn women s basketball team s transformation into the most successful program in the history of the sport. Welcome to The American The American welcomed Keitha Adams and Wichita State to the conference this year. Wichita State joined The American as a full member on July 1.
