Rematch Golden Eagles host UT Martin for 2011 & 2012 OVC Tournament Championship Rematch It s been two years since the Golden Eagles have won the battle for the skies, but the University of Tennessee Martin enters the Hooper Eblen Center Monday, Jan. 21, for a rematch of the 2011 and 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship. The Skyhawks enter the rematch with two losses in the conference and Tech off the heels of a tough loss in Charleston, Ill. against Eastern Illinois. Although there are four other games being played around the OVC, all eyes will be on the Eblen Center. Setting the Stage: The senior class has played UT Martin five times in regular season action over the course of their careers, and has accumulated a 2-3 record but is 0-2 in tournament action, both meetings occurring in the OVC Tournament Jala Harris led the Golden Eagles with 26 points, tying her career high in the win over SIUE (1/12). Harris also added 7 assists. Championship. In their past four meetings, UT Martin has scored 82.5 points per game, and Tech gave up 89 points against EIU in its last outing. Over the past week, the Golden Eagles have spent hours in the gym preparing for this game, but Jim Davis and his team, this is just another game. Another conference game that must be won. Since the season began, every opponent has circled, starred and highlighted its game against Tennessee Tech. There is no opponent that does not seek enjoyment from dethroning the king of the skies. UT Martin is no different, and while they have had the advantage over the past few years, this game has been on the minds of the Skyhawks since preseason rankings came out in October. The Tech Athletics Dept. is hosting Take A Kid To The Game night, an event that allows one free youth admission (ages 3 through 18) with each paid admission. TENNESSEE TECH PROBABLE STARTERS Pos. Harris tied her career high 26 points in the win over SIUE shooting a 66.7 clip from the floor, dishing out seven assists in 33 minutes of play. Harris scored 12 points against a tough EIU team, dishing out five of the team s 10 assists as the Golden Eagles shot 52 percent from the floor. Tech has shot 50+ percent from the floor five times this season and in three of their past three games. Much of Tech s precision has come from Diamond Henderson and Lashay Davis. Henderson leads the team with 15.2 points per game. Davis averages 7.5 points per game on the season, but 11.2 points per 40 minutes in conference action. While Tech s guard play is the major contributer to the Golden Eagles offense, junior forward Molly Heady is averaging 9.0 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game in OVC play. T Keyah Williams, Tech s main center out of Florida, has tossed in 5.8 points and grabbed 5.0 rebounds per conference game. A Look at the Panthers UT Martin had a hiccup in the middle of the season, dropping two conference competitions to Murray State and Belmont, but the Skyhawks appeared to have bounced back, winning two straight, including a 75-56 victory Saturday over Morehead State. All season the Skyhawks have been led by junior guards Heather Butler and Jasmine Newsome. The pair is currently averaging 43.4 points per game as the top two scorers in the conference, while also leading the top scoring offense in the OVC. SERIES HISTORY The Golden Eages and the Skyhawks have met 61 times since their first meeting in 1970. The Tennessee Titans have battled for superiority in the state ever since joining the NCAA. Tech leads the series 44-17, despite being grounded in recent years. The Golden Eagles are 1-5 in their past six meetings. 2012-2013 two gamess that week. SMARTY PANTS The women s basketball team recorded a 3.361 team GPA for the fall semester, their third highest semester GPA in program history. The 2012 fall semester Athletic Director s Honor Roll, which was announced earlier this month, included 216 students in athletics with a GPA of 3.0 or better for the past four-month session, the secondhighest Honor Roll total in school history. Included on the list was Katherine Barker, Christina Caddy, Kellie Cook, Kylie Cook, Lashay Davis, Mariah Dean, Quira Demery, Jala Harris, Molly Heady, Diamond Henderson, Kayla Kimes, Candace Parson, Hope Scantland, Krystal Stirrup and T Keyah Williams. RETRO HARRIS Jala Harris had her first 20 point performance against Samford (11/6) giving Davis a glimpse of the Harris Golden Eagle fans came to know last season. Harris averaged 15.2 points per game during the 2011-12 season, but Samford was only the second time Harris scored double-digits. FROM DOWNTOWN The Golden Eagles have the highest three-point percentage in the OVC. Tech has made 49 threes to date and are averaging 38.9% from behind the arc. SHINE BRIGHT LIKE A DIAMOND Diamond Henderson was voted adidas OVC co-player of the Week (11/20) after she recorded 26.0 points per game as Tennessee Tech split a pair of games last week. She came off the bench in the loss to Akron and scored a career-high 31 points. In the win over Rice, Henderson recorded 21 points, a career-high six assists and a career-best four steals to go with one blocks. NEW KID ON THE BLOCK Lashay Davis was voted adidas OVC Newcomer of the Week (11/20) after she put up 9.5 points per game while shooting 53.8 percent from the floor as Tennessee Tech went 1-1 last week. She scored 10 points versus Akron and followed that up with nine against Rice. Davis drained three shots from behind the arc against Rice while also dishing out a career-high four assists. GUARDS WITH 30-POINT GAMES Diamond Henderson is only the seventh guard in program history to score 30+ points in a game. Tammy Burton Pam Chamvers Tacarra Hayes Dana Bilyew Rachael Govvle Kellie Cook Diamond Henderson CAPTAINS: Senior Kellie Cook and junior Molly Heady were named captains of the 2012-13 Tennessee Tech women s basketball team. The duo has high expectations for the team, and with a new coaching staff and a completely different dynamic, the Golden Eagles are seeking an Ohio Valley Conference Championship that eluded the eighth-winningest program in NCAA Division I history last season. PRESEASON ALL- OVC: After becoming eligible following fall semester exams due to NCAA transfer rules, Jala Harris made an instant impact for the Golden Eagles, playing in 20 games last season. She finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game. Last season she also netted a spot on the OVC all-newcomer team for her efforts. NO. 1 TARGET: The Golden Eagles have a giant target on their back after being picked first in the OVC East Division in the OVC preseason poll. Tech has made it to the OVC Tournament championship game the past two seasons. East: 1. Tennessee Tech 2. Eastern Kentucky 3. Belmont 4. Morehead State 5. Tennessee State 6. MAGIC 70: In regular season games, Tech is 37-6 in regular season action when the Golden Eagles have scored 70+ points. SENIOR CAPSTONES: Tech s roster lists five seniors: Katherine Barker, Kellie Cook, Kylie Cook, Jala Harris, and Lashay Davis. Davis is in her senior year academically but holds junior elgibility status. All five are scheduled to graduate in May. EXHIBITION: The Golden Eagles defeated Lee University in an exhibition match Nov. 5, 71-66. T Keyah Williams recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. * stats for the game do not count toward career stats or toward the 2012-13 record. A NEW ERA: First year head coach Jim Davis is no stranger to the court, or to the color purple. After 25 years at Clemson, and a brief retirement, Davis returns to his alma mater to see if he can make another run at the NCAA. NEW FACES ON THE BENCH: Joining Davis is a brand new staff. Erin Batth, Davis former player at Clemson, joins him yet again. Batth has several years of coaching experience, along with WNBA and international play. Former Golden Eagle sharp shooter, Allison Clark also joins Davis staff. Clark has been the 4

assistant coach at Middle Tennessee for the past few years. Rounding out the staff is Bart Walker. Walker coached at the JUCO level and found great success leading his team to several championships. Jim Davis Head Coach First Season Jim Davis holds a master s degree from Tennessee Tech, has led teams to Ohio Valley Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference championships, and has found coaching success on every level from the Tennessee high school ranks to the WNBA. He s the perfect fit to take the reins of the tradition-rich Tennessee Tech women s basketball program. Jim Davis was named in July as the head coach for the Golden Eagle women s basketball team. A native of Englewood, Tenn., Davis coaching resume includes junior high and high school positions, a brilliant sixyear span at Roane State Community College, one championship year at Middle Tennessee State, 18 highly successful seasons at Clemson University, a year in the WNBA with the Minnesota Lynx, and the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Young Harris College in Georgia. Following 18 successful seasons as head coach at Clemson and two as Assistant Athletic Director, Davis tried retirement but quickly found he still yearned to coach. In 2009, he was contacted about taking an assistant coaching position with the Minnesota Lynx. In 2011, he accepted an assistant coaching assignment at Young Harris College and helped create a new program. In just one season, he helped take the team from inception to a 23-3 record with a roster featuring only freshmen and sophomores. The majority of Davis past coaching career was at Clemson, and his record includes a lengthy list of highlights. In 18 years, he led his team to 16 post-season appearances including 14 trips to the NCAA Tournament and two WNIT appearances. While earning 355 victories, he brought the program into national prominence, guiding the Tigers to two championships in the impossibly tough Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). His Clemson teams advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 four times and climbed to the Elite Eight one time, and he posted 51 victories over Top 25 teams. The team achieved 20 wins or more in 11 of his 18 seasons, and earned Top 25 Final National Rankings 11 times. Davis was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1994. 2012-2013 The record book reflects 501 all-time victories in his 25 seasons as a collegiate head coach, and he is the winningest basketball coach men or women in Clemson history. Even more impressive than his on-court record is the academic success of his student-athletes. During his span as Clemson head coach from 1987 through 2005, Davis saw every single four-year player receive her degree. Prior to his arrival at Clemson, Davis was a familiar figure with Tennessee Tech fans if not appreciated as he served one season as head coach of arch-rival Middle Tennessee State. During the 1986-87 season, he guided the Lady Raiders to a 19-8 record and a share of the Ohio Valley Conference championship. Prior to his stop at Middle Tennessee, Davis spent the 1985-86 season as an assistant coach with the University of Florida Lady Gator basketball program. A Tennessee native, Davis spent six highly successful years at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn., before moving to Florida. Davis put together one of the most successful stints ever in the junior college ranks by coaching Roane State s Raiderettes to 127 wins against only 35 losses, building a.784 winning percentage. His teams won four Tennessee Junior College Athletic Association divisional championships and one state championship, and were ranked in the Top 10 by the National Junior College Athletic Association three times (1981, 1984, 1985). His biggest accomplishment was the 1984 team s finish of 27-2 and the NJCAA National Championship title. Before entering the junior college ranks, Davis coached two years at Englewood (Tenn.) Junior High School and 10 seasons in various Tennessee high schools, including stops at Madisonville, Charleston and McMinn high schools. His overall high school record was 197-93, a winning percentage of.679. Davis graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1970 with a bachelor s degree in health and physical education. After doing graduate work at ETSU, he received his master s degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from Tennessee Tech in 1975. In 1996, Davis was inducted into the Tennessee Junior and Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame. In the fall of 1996, he was inducted into Tiger Brotherhood, and in 2008 the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame. Davis becomes only the fifth head coach in the 42-year history of women s basketball at Tennessee Tech. Davis is married to the former Bobbie Henderson and they have one grown son, Todd, a daughter-in-law, Rhonda, and two grandchildren, Ansleigh Grace and Jacob Garrett.
