Ever since I got my PPL in 1992, I had wanted to fly around the whole coast of Britain. I originally wanted to fly this route for pragmatic reasons as with a coastline to follow, even I could not get lost. Finally everything came together. A week off work, 20 hours left before G ARMO's 6 month/50 hr and some decent weather, On 7th July 2013 I set off. Here is the GPS track... I had originally intended to route via Wick and Stornoway, but this was the only area where the weather was at all in doubt, and I decided to cut across from Perth to the West coast instead and since this gave me a spare day, I decided to include an overnight stop on the Scillies. In retrospect I think I could have done the original trip as planned but I enjoyed the Scillies enormously and will go back. It was about 15 hours in the air and the plan was simply to follow the coast anticlockwise from Shoreham as far as airspace would allow. I asked Valley If I could fly round Anglesey, but they were not happy and "suggested" I flew down the Menai Straits instead, which was fabulous, and probably a better sight seeing experience anyway. Stops were as follows, with fuel uplifted everywhere except the Scillies. Shoreham Great Oakley Beverley (overnight stop in the New Inn, Leven. This is about 2 miles from the Airfield.) Beverley Perth (overnight stop in the Skylodge Hotel on the Airfield. This is very convenient but there is no restaurant, so I walked a mile to the Wheel Inn for a fish and chip supper, which was good.) Perth Islay Blackpool (overnight stop in a Premier Inn on site)
Blackpool Aperporth Newquay (overnight stop in the Smugglers Inn in the Airways Hotel, 5 mins walk from the airfield.) Newquay Scillies (overnight stop in the Isles of Scilly Country Guesthouse. About 20 mins cycle ride away, probably less if you are fitter than me.) Scillies Perranporth Shoreham The only leg I took any in flight pictures was the one between Perth and Islay. I did this trip by myself and feel safer looking through the window than looking through a viewfinder, but I couldn't resist a few pictures. Climbing near Perth prior to crossing the mountains.. This was about the highest level I climbed to..
This is possibly the Blackwater Reservoir, but I may be wrong.. (it may be Loch Tay, see postings below). Another en route picture..
and this was the high spot (pun intended).. Here is G ARMO on Islay..
And on the Scillies, you can see my ground transport..
G ARMO is my 1961 C172B around which I am still trying to set up a group, or possibly sell...http://forums.flyer.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=83939 Re: Shoreham to Shoreham via Scotland PostPosted:Sun Jul 14, 2013 3:53 pm by pauldean Great report and pics. Just a suggestion for the pictures on future flights set a simple compact camera to fully automatic, and high resolution, hold it close to the windows, and take lots of pictures without looking at the camera just concentrate on the flying. About 1 in 10 will be reasonable, and maybe 2 or 3 in 10 will have a good bit in them that can be saved if you crop the edges. PostPosted:Sun Jul 14, 2013 10:12 pm by jerry_atrick Envious! And the C172 is a gem! PostPosted:Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:31 pm by BlackheathBloke Very nice, I want to do that trip myself! One day... PostPosted:Tue Jul 16, 2013 1:25 am by 10W I think the body of water is Loch Tay.
