Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School Sports News For all the very latest news log on to ccgrammarschool.co.uk Sports Day Teachers assembled their clipboards, 6 th formers organised the equipment and the competitors completed their warm ups on what was an excellent first day at the Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School Sports Day. Nearly all events had a 100% turn out which is testament to sports captains across the school and to all staff for helping organise the athletes. The Javelin throwers saw a new record with new year 7 student Ellie Rush throwing 18.63m, beating the old record by nearly 4m Harrison Mogg-Walls was the closest in the Shot Putt, he threw the Shot just 7cm away from the year 9 Record at 11.70m to win the year 9 boys competition. The biggest Long Jump of the day was performed by senior student Austen Wood with 5.28m. Other records fell in the Triple Jump with year 9 Multi-Eventer Bea Lever jumping 8.37m and year 7 student Kiera Clark in the Discus smashing the old record with a throw of 15.87m. The running events produced an amazing ten new records, adding to the three beaten during the field events. Coming into the final bend MS and RP were neck and neck in the year 7 girls 4x100m relay but MS fumbled the baton allowing the RP girls beat the 20 year old record with a finishing time of 62.03seconds. In the same event MS girls won the year 8 race, smashing the current record by over a second completing the team race in 58.63 seconds Two other year eight girls who broke records are Esther Laffey in the 800m and Lauren Marsh in the 200m, where the original record had been held for over 23 years The year 8 boys 100m was one of the closest ever with the first two being split by 0.06 seconds with Jarvis Stevens of TS winning. The year 9 Multi eventers both broke records, Ciaran Claris winning the event for the boys and Bea Lever for the girls who also stole the show breaking 3 records in the process to winning the event. Looking across to the upper school and senior athletes the main man was Ally Kinloch who continued breaking records with his international prowess and completed the 1500m in 4minutes and 27 seconds to add to the record he broke last year in the same event. Amy Clayton was also a record breaker in the multi-event scoring 188points across the four disciplines. There was a surprise result in the year 10/11 boys 100m with Henry Collier beating all other competitors to give TS maximum points. The year 10/11 girl sprint events emerged a new star, Elise Cox winning both the 100m and 200m for RP. Abby Piper won both the Triple Jump and the 1500m for year 10/11 girls which might encourage her to become a multi-eventer in the next few years and attempt to steal the senior record. Ben Pond Ben has had a busy couple of weeks over the Easter holiday. On Sunday 6th April Ben took part in the final of the British Schools Biathlon Championships having qualified from an earlier regional competition. This competition is run by Pentathlon GB and comprises a run and swim, two of the 5 events from the Olympic sport of Modern Pentathlon. The event took place at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on the opening weekend to the public. Ben was competing in the Under 19 age group against 26 athletes representing schools from all over the country, in total almost 800 boys and girls competed in the various age groups over the weekend. The 200m swim took place first in the 50m Olympic pool. Ben was the only swimmer to go under 2 minutes from all the athletes, finishing in a creditable 1.58. The competition is based on points for times achieved in both disciplines so this gave Ben a good advantage going into the run. The run is 1600m and for this event it was not on track but on a course looping round a tarmac area adjacent to the Olympic pool with some tight corners to negotiate. This is not a surface Ben is used to running on and with parts of the surface wet from earlier rain it proved to be a challenge to all the athletes. Ben finished 7 th in the run but the overall points were enough to secure him first place by a clear margin and become the U 19 British Schools Biathlon Champion. This is the first time Ben has won the British Schools Biathlon title although he has achieved podium finishes as part of Chatham House teams in the past. Following this Ben travelled to Berlin with 3 other Team GB youth male athletes to take part in a week long training camp with athletes from all over Europe. The event in Barcelona this weekend is the final selection event for the Modern Pentathlon European Youth Championships in July. 3
Madeleine Ballantine Madeleine Ballantine has won 2 gold medals in gymnastics. She s moved up a level and this was her first competition at this level. The first was on Sunday 27th April at the Weald of Kent floor and vault competition and on Saturday 10th May at the Meapa invitational floor and vault. Madeleine also competed in the Kent Floor and Vault competition on Sunday 8th June. This was the first big comp since moving up into the group she is in and she won a silver medal. George Pittock George recently completed the Channel 50 Challenge, a 50 mile charity bike ride. The event was organised by the Folkestone Rotary Club to raise money for the Air Ambulance, Pilgrims Hospices and other local charities. There was a choice of 10, 30, or 50 mile routes on Romney Marsh. George chose the 50 mile route and rode together with his family. George completed the 50 miles (52 m i l e s a c t u a l l y ) v e r y comfortably in 3 hours 34 minutes and had a very good day. Tennis continues to grow at Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School and a number of different students have represented the school throughout the summer. Well done to all competitors, keep practicing in the off-season and we will have an even stronger team ready to compete across the whole county next year. 4
Georgia Silk - Fencing Success Georgia represented the South-east at the British Youth Championships held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on 4th May 2014. There were 50 girls in her category from all over the United Kingdom. Georgia had a fantastic first Poule only losing 1 fight and received a bye into the tableu of 32. Her next match was a direct elimination to 10 points, Georgia was matched against a strong competitor and won the match taking her through to the tableu of 16. In the next round Georgia had a tough fight on her hands, she scored 6 points against the girl who was to eventually get the silver medal. Georgia's final ranking was 13 and we are extremely proud of Georgia's achievement at her first National competition. Following this, Georgia took part in the Kent Foil Championships won gold. She fenced fantastically winning every single fight over the day. She is now ranked the number one fencer in Kent and the Southeast region, 10th in England and 13th in Great Britain. She has been training hard and she is now reaping the rewards. A reward trip was organised by Kent Cricket offering students across the county to go and watch them play against Derbyshire at the end of June. CCGS took a minibus full of the most committed Cricketers from years 7-10 to watch the match. They all got to see Kent both bat and bowl and most importantly watched Kent win the game Well done to all students who deserved to be at the match and we hope to run more of these rewards in the future. 5
Ally Kinloch Ally competed in the Under 15s London mini marathon on Sunday 13th April, an event which is by invitation only. He came third in this race and due to his excellent performance he has been selected to attend the Virgin London Marathon Young Athlete Camp at St Mary's University in Twickenham in August (he was selected last year too due to his England place). It's a residential camp for four days which is funded entirely by the organisation so a great opportunity to train and meet elite athletes. Ally also ran the 3000m recently and got a personal best with a time of 8.49. The Kent qualifying time is 8.59 and the national qualifying time is 8.50 so he should get an automatic selection with his time. Thanet Rounders Tournament Victory for U12 & U13 Girls Both our U12 and U13 girls teams were unbeaten at the recent Thanet Rounder s Tournament to win against 9 other schools. The U12 s scored over 60 rounders in their first Thanet Tournament, comfortably beating local schools including Dane Court, Ursuline and St. Georges. This squad were very strong when batting and despite missing their strongest player, Mia Murray, they worked very well as a team and their success reflected this. The U13 s scored over 50 rounders but it was their fielding skills that placed them in a league above the other teams, getting every player out in all their games. Captained by Alice Wilkening, the strong squad of 11 saw their confidence grow with each victory. The girls were very happy with their success in this tournament after they missed out on it last year due to bad weather. 6
U12 Cricket The U12s made an excellent start to Cricket life at Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School. The team learnt a huge amount en route to the Kent Cup Quarter Final and made outstanding progress in all areas of the game, particularly batting. Sam Cooper did an excellent job organising and leading the team. Strong contributions from Ethan Page and Henry Mileham with the bat helped Harry Jones and Oliver Bartlett who excelled with the ball. With some hard work the team can continue to progress as the training numbers and quality were excellent throughout the whole season. U13 Cricket It was an unsuccessful season this year for the U13s, managing only 1 draw during the season. Although the boys showed quality in patches the lack of consistency cost the team in many games. There were some highlights during the season, Marius Thompson's 28 against Dane Court was a very good innings batting with the tail and Jacob Newman's all round performance against Sir Roger Manwoods. There is potential in the side and with some hard work and consistency the team could turn into a successful side. U14 Cricket Played 4 Won 3 This squad has been a pleasure to coach this year. Players have displayed a good level of ability both in bowling and batting. However, we have not been able to effectively apply both to any single match. In most of our matches, this did not have a great bearing on the result. Good bowling and fielding against Marsh Academy was followed by good batting against Kent College and Sir Roger Manwood s. Unfortunately, this was not good enough against Skinner s in the Kent Cup where an early batting collapse chasing a relatively small target resulted in our eventual defeat. Some notable performances this season include Elliot Fox s unbeaten 65 against Sir Roger Manwood s, Jake Warner gaining 3 wickets and 29 runs against Kent College and Joshua Attwell taking 2 wickets for 1 run off 3 overs against Marsh Academy. Good luck next season. 1 st XI It has been a steep learning curve for the Senior Cricket Squad this season with a predominantly young team taking the field for an ultimately unsuccessful season resulting in no games won. The squad was admirably led from the front by James McPherson who shone in his role as captain. He was backed up by a fairly inexperienced squad, which shows plenty of promise for years to come with players from Yrs 10-13 used. Notable performances throughout the season came from James Putter, Ben Fowler and James McPherson. 7
Priory Primary School Sports Day Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School hosted Priory Primary School for their annual Sports Day. The event was organised by Priory and run by Sports Leaders in Year 10 at CCGS who have completed their Level 1 sports leaders course alongside their PE GCSE this year. The event was a fantastic success with hundreds of youngsters having a go at different sports and activities and they were lead superbly by the sport leaders making the whole school very proud. We are hoping this will become an annual event due to the success of this year. 8
Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School were visited by Louise Ferns, the Schools Presenter for Kent for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Louise spoke to the Lower School students about the work of the hospital and the importance of raising funds to maintain the various hospital functions. Having recently completed a series of charity events for GOSH, CCGS were delighted to present to GOSH a cheque for 3065.17. Teachers Clark Goodwin, Tom Richford and Neil Wakefield completed an 83 mile sponsored ride from Great Ormond Street Hospital to Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School on Friday 2nd May. Aside from this, the school held a non-uniform day, a cake sale and many students completed a sponsored static cycle challenge. Other students devised their own sponsored events, including Harry Jones and Joshua Bentley who raised over 100 by working together over consecutive weekends to run, cycle and swim the equivalent 83 mile distance of the charity cycle ride. Apart from the generosity of the students, staff, parents, family and friends; the school would like to thank all the contributions made by local businesses including SP Cycles, Heron s Swimming Pool Herne Bay, Ambition Sport, Trew s and Thanet Commercials.
