The bulls we chose to breed our cows to last year are having their calves born now, but even better, the bulls we chose 3 years ago are having their daughters drop down their first calves. It s that time when you can start to see whether or not your choice in bulls and the $$$ you invested are starting to pay off. This year s Angus offering will have 21 bulls in the sale out of first calving 2 year old heifers, something we re quite proud of. This year s Angus offering will have more calving ease bulls than we ve ever offered before. I m not gonna lie to you, it s taking me a bit to get used to judging good solid calving ease heifer bulls, when I step across the fence into the Charolais bull pen and see 40 odd power bulls standing there looking at me. None the less, the red and black Angus bulls on offer have all the attributes that made Angus what it is today, and more, they ve got exceptional carcass. The Charolais offering is top quality as well. Our focus on Charolais will be as a mostly terminal sire. Although we ourselves will be concerned about udder quality, and maternal abilities, the bulls we bring to you will be about how much $$$ the resulting calf crop will put in your pocket. We hope the information we give you will help in your choice of what sires will work for you. This year we will also be adding 200 open heifers to the sale. These heifers will consist of approximately 100 red and red brockle heifers originating from the Rick and Bryce Strate and Don Hobberstad herds, and 100 black and black brocke heifers from Hicken Ranch. Diablo was the high selling bull at Rod Macleod's sale a couple years ago and Ben was the runner-up bidder. Not to be deterred Ben acquired the Canadian Semen Rights on the bull and it turned out to be the right thing to do as Diablo has really been burning it up in the shows in the states and Thistle Ridge is the only place to get his genetics in Canada. That same year he traveled to Triple SSS to take a run at Endorse, the largest rib eyed bull in the offering. Once again Ben came in second in the buying race, but first in acquiring the Canadian Semen Rights. These choices along with Ben's willingness to add Black genetics to his red program to provide outcross and unique genetics to his program do set Thistle Ridge apart from many programs.
