UNSW RUGBY 2011 COME WITH ME BROTHER PRESIDENT S PIECE Welcome to the 2011 season and our new No 1 rugby field now located in the North West corner of the totally redeveloped David Phillips ground. The old "Roper Grandstand" is gone and the builders are progressing with the new Central Amenities Building the entry point of which is from Banks Road and which will provide facilities for Football and Baseball/Softball and the sports new to DP, Hockey and Tennis. The new No 1 Rugby field looks in great shape and not affected by the other building works. Independent of the Central Amenities Building we have and long term will continue to have, direct access to the rugby field from Gwea Avenue and Astrolabe Park corner and most importantly we will have our own Pavilion with good amenities and a kiosk. The Pavilion, due for completion in late April hopefully will see the Roper name live on. The Club this year has a number of events planned, there will be a special 'Welcome Back to DP Day' for supporters and Old Boys as soon as the Pavilion is completed, followed by a Supporters Event to combine with the Wobbly Wales function on July 22nd which is the day before the Wallabies V South Africa in Sydney. Make a diary note for the 22nd July now! The following day the Club plays Newport at David Phillips. 1 UNSW RUGBY NEWSLETTER 14.02.2011
This year the Club also has cause for special Celebration as it is the 50th Anniversary of the 1961 Kentwell Cup Premiership which was also the first championship win in any sport for the University. A return to 1st Division by winning the Club Championship in 2011 would be cause for double celebration. The UNSW Rugby Committee 2011 has a busy year ahead, our responsibility is to maintain a strong administration necessary to ensure that under Club Captain Dave Collins and Club Coach John Morrison players are provided with the best opportunity to enjoy their rugby and with it success on the field. Also being part of UNSW Rugby means we are part of the University community and with it opportunities for scholarships, support programmes and other benefits. The Club has a substantial and loyal support base. In 2011 with our new No 1 field and pavilion being completed we look forward to a great season and one that will provide the opportunity to play rugby in an environment that has traditionally made playing rugby for UNSW so unique. John Dezarnaulds DP1 gone! New pavilion under construction COACHES CORNER Welcome to the new season and a new start. With silverware being the carrot we dangle in front of our noses each year, this year is no different. With 1 st, 2 nd and 4 th grade all making GF s over the past two seasons it s now time we won one, or five. And that will be the focus this year across the club but this will not come without hard work and dedication. The theme for this year s preseason is Competitive and Comparative meaning exactly that. Training drills, games and fitness sessions will be competitive as well as comparative with the beep test and coopers test being performed and recorded during preseason to test player s fitness. Players will be expected to reach a predetermined level based on their playing position to be considered for top squad. There has been a recruitment drive this year which should result in creating competition for places which can only improve our club as a whole, so if you want to be in the shop window for selection get to pre season and start putting in the hard yards. The rewards will be clear to see come the start of the season. As mentioned there has been a recruitment drive but we can always do with more quality players and coaches so grab your mates and get the word out that UNSW is the place to play and coach rugby this year. 2 UNSW RUGBY NEWSLETTER 14.02.2011
On the note of fitness, this will be the main focus for top squad and colts during preseason. We have fitness coach Danny Healy (currently training Randwick colts) on board from the second week of preseason to the start of the season. We also have a wrestling conditioning coach for three sessions in early preseason which will get us well on the way to being one of the fittest clubs in the comp come the start of the season. All top squad and colts are expected to at training from Tuesday the 15 th of Feb to avail of the fitness work that we have planned. Pre season starts on the 15 th of Feb at Dave Phillips. Some of us have started early with beach sessions at Coogee on Saturday morning at 9am, these sessions will continue up to the first trial match and all are welcome. The sessions consist of a mixture of light runs, a game of touch and finishing with a cool down swim. The numbers have been good so far but the earlier you start doing some fitness work the easier preseason will be so get down to Coogee on Saturday morning, we meet at the main stairs. Club squad preseason will be based around ball skills and drills/games that will incorporate these skills. Three pre season games have been organised against Hunters Hill, Balmain and Campbelltown To outline the plan for the season and the structure of training there will be a meeting after training on the 15 th for Top squad players and coaches. Players will be given the opportunity to add their input with an open discussion at the end of the meeting. Apart from all the serious rugby talk we still plan to have a fantastic year off the field and with the Donny back on board for another season the social scene should be bigger and better this year. Ronan Murphy CAPTAIN S CORNER Welcome to season 2011. So far the season is shaping up to be an absolute cracker. The coaching staff has been working hard behind the scenes to bring us to the next level in our rugby careers. The training programs, trial games and games plans are shaping up well with the next few weeks set to be both gruelling and rewarding. The pre pre season Coogee Beach sessions have been a fantastic start for some with the fitness levels certainly increasing in the summer heat. Approximately 45 different faces have been seen down at the beach for different forms of fitness. There have been old, new and returned faces providing that UNSW Rugby is alive and ready to take on the next season. These beach sessions are set to continue up until the trials start, so get alone and increase that fitness. It may hurt now, but it will hurt less later. In 2011 we also welcome the redevelopment of David Phillips Field. The works have begun and are set to be a state of the art facility and definitely the best in Suburban Rugby Union. We appreciate that the redevelopment may cause a bit of havoc in the first few weeks of the season but it will be worth the wait. Your patience is appreciated. If you are currently sitting on the sideline considering your rugby options then let me tell you that you don t want to miss out on UNSW Rugby season 2011. See you on the field!
