In Holbox (pronounced Hole-bosh), the local fishermen bring in Lobster, Cobia, Sierra, Snapper and Grouper while ignoring the giant Tarpon that gather nearby every spring and summer. These huge fish gather in amazing numbers during the summer and represent one of the greatest opportunities to catch a 100 pound Silver King on a fly. There are also Permit, lots of Snook, Barracuda and baby Tarpon to widen the fishing experience. While this area is justly famous for clear water fly fishing, spin anglers will have equal enjoyment with the wide array of species in the Gulf and lagoons. Sunshine and nature lovers may opt to snorkel with the whales, photograph the flamingos or climb to the top of a Mayan temple. It can all be part of the adventure at Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge. If you are targeting the big tarpon, ever day on the water is another chance for the fish of a lifetime, and there is no substitute for time on the water! Serious trophy fishermen and weekend warriors will pursue giant and baby Tarpon, along with the usual offshore Jacks, Barracuda and Snook. Fly anglers love the combination of great casting conditions and incredible fish, and spin fishermen revel in the quantity of fish including Snook, Barracuda, Jacks, Corvina, Cobia, some Permit and giant, juvenile and baby Tarpon. The majority of our fishing is done with fly rods, but we have extensive spin fishing options as well. On fishing days, 2 anglers and their guide will depart early (6 am) for the fishing grounds. Weather and your guide will determine if its best offshore or in the lagoons. Summer season (May 1 through September 30) focuses on the big migrating Tarpon and the resident baby and juvenile population. Winter season (October through April) focuses on the juvenile and baby Tarpon (no giants) along with all other species in the protected Mangrove Lagoons. Perfect for 1 or 2 couples, there will be time for each of you to focus on what you want. You ll work with host Luciano and the weather reports to pick the best days for fishing (or chillin!) so that you fish about 1/2 of your days on the Island. During the summer, most fishing will be for the big Tarpon offshore as the big bruisers migrate along the Island...In the Winter, we ll target the baby Tarpon in the Mangroves of the upper Island, fly casting in beautiful, 2-5 foot deep flat. We ll be looking for Baby Tarpon, Barracuda, Jack Crevalle, Snook and a few other exotics marauding the shallows, looking for baitfish to fill their bellies. You ll depart the lodge early in the morning on fishing days, and make the 30 minute or so run to the fishing grounds..running just offshore in the gentle waters of the gulf, and finally work your way past the breakwater and into the mangrove flats. After a morning chasing tarpon, you ll enjoy a lunch and drinks in the boat while your shoulder takes a break. Some more casting after lunch will finish the day, followed by the return run to the lodge in time for fresh Ceviche and a cold beer. How to get to Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge: Any Day Cancun Airport or Hotel Pick ups. 2.5 hour Sightseeing Trip 30 minute ferry to Holbox Your Golf Cart Taxi will be waiting (Taxi Not Inc) Logistics and Itineraries of the Trips Trips begin at the Cancun Airport or your hotel in Cancun. Those arriving at or before 2:00 pm will be picked up at the airport by our private van for the 2 hour trip to Chiquila and then by boat for the short ride to the island. Those arriving after 2:00 pm will overnight in Cancun and be picked at 10:00 am at their hotel. Upon arrival at the lodge our manager will settle you into your room and pour a special beverage while he explains the ins and outs of your stay. Except for Special Dinners, evening meals are on your own at the excellent restaurants options. They will average about $10 to $15. Fishing days start with a coffee to your door wake up followed by breakfast and your 6:00 am departure, two per guided boat, for the fishing waters. You will return at 2:00 pm in the afternoon. Non fishing clients arise on their own schedule for a continental breakfast and a day of beach living. Some custom trips may include adventure activities to add to the beach and fishing events. Happy hour, at 6:00 pm at the Open Cerveza Bar on our nearly world famous terrace, is in full view of a magnificent sunset.
