Hilliard Davidson Baseball 2015 One of the beautiful things about baseball is that every once in a while you come into a situation where you want to, and where you have to, reach down and prove something. - Nolan Ryan

COACHING STAFF Justin Swallie - Head Varsity Coach Coach Justin Swallie is currently in his 9th year teaching Social Studies at Hilliard Weaver Middle School, and is in his 9th season coaching high school baseball in Hilliard. He spent his first 4 years with the freshman program at Hilliard Davidson High School. He moved over to coach at Hilliard Bradley High School for two years and worked with the Varsity program. He is currently in his 3rd year at Davidson working with the Varsity baseball team. He has spent the last 2 seasons assisting legendary coach Jim Dougherty, and begins his 1st season as head coach. He also coaches 7th grade football at Weaver Middle School. Coach Swallie is a graduate of Hilliard Darby High School and Otterbein University. He currently lives in Powell and has a 5 year old son named Max. Dave Swallie - Asst. Varsity Coach Coach Dave Swallie is a 7th grade social studies teacher at Weaver Middle School. This is his 26th year of teaching and coaching in Hilliard. He has spent the last 16 years as a varsity assistant at Hilliard Darby High School. He also coaches 7th grade football at Weaver Middle School. Coach Swallie is a graduate of The Ohio State University and Marygrove College. He lives in Hilliard with his wife Julie and has two sons, Justin and Eric. He also has a grandson Max. Dave is excited to be part of the Davidson Wildcat Baseball program. Doug Biddinger - Asst. Varsity Coach This is Coach Doug Biddinger s 22nd season as an assistant for the Hilliard Davidson baseball team. He teaches AP US History, American History Through Film, and Government in the Social Studies Department at Davidson, and with baseball has served as a JV assistant, freshman assistant, freshman head coach, and for the past 13 seasons as JV head coach. He is an alumnus of Ohio State University, with a Bachelor s Degree in Secondary Social Studies Education and a Masters in Sports and Exercise Management. He resides in Hilliard with wife Judy, and sons Ben and Colin. COACHING STAFF Tyler Backstrom - Varsity Pitching Coach Coach Tyler Backstrom is a graduate of Hilliard Davidson High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball and is a member of Davidson s Athletic Hall of Fame. In baseball, he was a member of teams that won 2 league titles outright, a district runner-up, district championship, and regional runner-up. He continued his baseball career at Ohio University where he pitched and played first base earning 3 Varsity letters. He is currently finishing up his degree in Middle Childhood Education at The Ohio State University. Tyler has also coached Varsity Football for the past 4 years. He also coached a 15 year old baseball team last summer and will continue in that role in 2014. Justin LaBelle - Head JV Coach Coach LaBelle is a 2008 graduate of Northmont High school in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in History and Geography in 2012, and the University of Dayton with a certificate in AYA (7-12) Social Studies in 2013. This is Coach LaBelle s first year coaching baseball and he would like to thank Justin Swallie and his staff at Davidson for giving him this opportunity and guiding him along the way. Nick Van Dyne - Head Freshman Coach Coach Van Dyne is entering his 2nd year as an Intervention Specialist at Hilliard Davidson High School, and his first year as the Head Freshman Baseball Coach. In the past two years, he has coached middle school football at Weaver as well as freshman football and basketball at Davidson. Coach Van Dyne is a graduate of Hilliard Davidson where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He continued his education and baseball career at Wittenberg University where he graduated with a degree in Early Childhood Education/Intervention Specialist. Grant Goodwin - Asst. Freshman Coach This is Coach Goodwin s first year coaching baseball and basketball at Hilliard Davidson. He graduated from Davidson in 2009, where he played multiple sports including baseball and basketball. Coach Goodwin attended Wittenberg University where he played baseball. He graduated in 2013. Coach Goodwin is also a member of the Hilliard Davidson Athletic Hall of Fame.

FRESHMAN COACHING STAFF John Klie - Weaver 8th Grade Coach Coach John Klie currently teaches math at Weaver Middle School. This is his sixth year at Weaver Middle School. Before that, he was a tutor at Davidson for one year. This is his seventh year as the 8th grade baseball coach. Coach Klie is also an assistant girls basketball coach at Davidson. He attended both Ohio University and Capital University before getting his degree. Coach Klie is also a Hilliard Davidson graduate in the class of 2002. He was a Davidson graduate in 2002 and played both basketball and baseball in high school. He graduated from Ohio University in 2006 earning a bachelor s degree in education and his Masters in 2011 from MaryGrove College. This is his eighth year teaching ; currently teaching World Studies and Sociology at Davidson. He lives in Hilliard and has a wife, Erika, and 2 year old son, Gavin. Matt Thompson - Volunteer 8th Grade Coach Coach Matt Thompson currently teaches 8th grade science at Weaver Middle School. This is his 1st year coaching and teaching with Hilliard City Schools. Coach Thompson earned his B.S in biology in 2013 and Master s in 2014 from The Ohio State University. He is a 2009 graduate of Elgin High School in Marion, Ohio. He lives in the Hilliard City School district with his wife Sandy, who teaches at Washington Elementary.
