THIS WEEK S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS: THE BOSTON BRUINS WEEK AHEAD MAY 13 MAY 20 STORM BREWING: The Bruins will square off in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning Saturday night at the TD Garden (8:00 p.m., TV: VERSUS, RADIO: 98.5 The Sports Hub). This is Boston s first Conference Finals appearance since 1992. The Lightning advanced to the ECF by sweeping the Washington Capitals in four games in the Conference Semifinals after winning a seven-game series against the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Conference Quarterfinals. Some notes on the Bolts: BLOCK PARTY: Tampa Bay leads all playoff teams in blocked shots with 233, which is an average of 21.2 per game. A quick look at playoff leaders reveals that the Lightning have four of the top five individual totals in the NHL: Eric Brewer leads the league with 43, followed by Mattias Ohlund with 36 and Brett Clark and Victor Hedman both have 31. Boston s Dennis Seidenberg is tied with Clark and Hedman with 31 of his own. SPECIAL TEAMS: The Lightning have the third-best power play in the playoffs this season, with a 26.7% success rate and finished the regular season with the sixth-best PP percentage (20.5%). Martin St. Louis leads the NHL in playoff power play scoring, with 3-4=7 totals. The Bolts have power play goals in six playoff games, and they are 5-1 in those games. Tampa Bay s penalty kill is the second-best in the postseason, shutting down 51 of 54 opponents man-advantages. They finished the regular season eighth overall on the PK with a 83.8% success rate. STRANGE STATS: Despite the Bolts having a goal differential of +14, Martin St. Louis has a plus/minus rating of -5 Tampa Bay is outscoring opponents in the playoffs by 1.28 goals per game, but they are being outshot by 8.8 shots per game The Bruins and Lightning are both averaging exactly 12.2 PIM per game Tampa Bay has an identical playoff record as Boston at 8-3, and the two teams shared an identical regular season record of 46-25-11 (Boston has home-ice advantage by virtue of being a division champion). STREAKING: Tim Thomas has won five straight starts, matching a career best in the postseason Nathan Horton (3-5=8) and Brad Marchand (4-3=7) each have five-game point streaks in progress David Krejci has a four-game point streak in progress with 4-5=9 totals. POSITIVE IMPACT: 15 of 19 skaters who have hit the ice for the Bruins in this year s playoffs have a positive plus/minus rating. Zdeno Chara, who led the league in plus/minus during the regular season with a mark of plus- 33, leads all playoff skaters with a rating of plus-11. SECOND ROUND CAPSULE: - The Bruins advanced to the ECF with a 4-game CSF sweep over the Flyers It was the 13 th sweep of a best-ofseven series in their history and their first since 2009 (CQF vs. MTL). - The Bruins won their fourth OT decision of this postseason with a 3-2 win on May 2 in Game 2, marking their first postseason with four overtime wins, matching a club mark for one playoff year (first set in 1978). -The Flyers put 54 shots on Tim Thomas in Game 2, which was the third highest shots allowed in a playoff game by the Bruins and the most since Montreal took 58 on April 3, 1947. -David Krejci scored the GWG in three of the four games vs. the Flyers, becoming just the third player in team history with three GWG s in one playoff series (Mel Hill, 1939 SF and Roy Conacher 1939 Finals). FIRST ROUND CAPSULE: - The Bruins advanced to the CSF with a 7-game CQF series win over the Canadiens It was the first series victory in their history in which they won after losing the first two games as they entered this post-season with an 0-26 series mark in that situation. - Three of their four wins came in overtime with Michael Ryder ending Game 4 and Nathan Horton settling Games 5 and 7 It was the first series in which they have played three overtime games since their 1998 CQF vs. Washington and was their first with three overtime wins since their 1943 SF vs. Montreal. - It was their 20th lifetime Game 7 and they are now 10-10 in those games... It was their fifth Game 7 decided in overtime and they now have a 3-2 mark in those contests.

AROUND TOWN WHAT: BEARD-A-THON Boston Bruins fans are invited to show their support for the B s by growing their own playoff beards and participating in the Bruins Beard-A-Thon. The 2011 Bruins Beard-A-Thon gives Bruins fans the opportunity to demonstrate their support for the team and raise money for the Boston Bruins Foundation and One Mission. The hockey playoff beard is an age-old tradition for players participating in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Fans can create their Bruins Beard-A-Thon profile by uploading their photo at www.bostonbruins.com. Participants can choose to grow their own beard and update their growth throughout the playoffs, or they can grow their beard virtually by choosing the Build-A-Beard option, giving women and children an opportunity to get involved. Beard growers may pledge themselves by making a donation, and their friends and family may also pledge their efforts. Donations can be made in two ways: a one-time pledge (minimum $10) or a daily pledge (minimum $0.50/day). Throughout the playoffs, fans will have the opportunity to win tickets if their beard is voted the best on BostonBruins.com.
