Academy Travel is delighted to present an outstanding professional development opportunity for current History teachers and student teachers. This 13-day program is designed to cover key syllabus areas from both the HSC Modern History syllabus and the VCE History syllabus. Investigate the rise and fall of the Third Reich and the resulting Cold War in Berlin, Nuremberg and Munich, with visits to extensive museums and tours with local experts. Travel to Russia to see the sites associated with the 1917 Revolution, the 1944 Siege of Leningrad and the Cold War with academic expert Dr Matthew Del Santo. This carefully planned program will be escorted by an experienced tour manager and include a series of guided tours, on site visits with experts and workshops, alongside time for sightseeing, shopping and soaking up the local cultures. He has a Bachelor of Arts with First- Class Honours from the University of Sydney and a PhD Philosophy in History from Cambridge University. He is an historian of contemporary post- Soviet Russia and a Danish Research Council post-doctoral fellow at the University of Copenhagen. His present project investigates narratives of Russia's past in contemporary Russian political discourse. He has worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and is a former Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. He is also a regular contributor to the ABC on matters of international relations, policies and politics. Matthew speaks a number of European languages, including Russian. The airline that offers the best flights for this itinerary is Etihad Airways. Your tour itinerary begins in Berlin at 6pm on Monday 9 th July. If you are arranging your own individual flights, you should ensure your flight arrives in Berlin by at least 3pm on that day. The tour program ends after breakfast in Moscow on Saturday 21 st July. A departure transfer is provided to Moscow airport on the last day please provide your flight details once booked. We can also provide a quote for an arrival airport transfer in Berlin on request. Non-teachers with a strong interest in the subject matter are also welcome. The tour is not suitable for children under the age of 16 years. Your passport must be valid until February 2019 or will need to be renewed prior to travel. Australian passport holders do not require a visa to travel to Europe; however, all visitors are required to obtain a visa to enter Russia. Meet your tour manager and the group in the hotel lobby at 6pm for a welcome drink, followed by a group dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Berlin (D) Above: Teachers touring Berlin, outside the Reichstag. The day begins where Hitler s rise to power began; the Reichstag building. You will have the chance to walk inside the glass dome if parliament is not sitting. A local guide will then lead a walking tour of Third Reich sites in the city centre. You will see the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the site of Hitler s bunker, Babelplatz and walk along the Unter den Linden. After lunch, there is an included visit to the German Historical Museum. The Museum has an excellent collection of permanent exhibits tracing the country s history from the Middle Ages, through the Wars until unification. The later afternoon and evening is at leisure to enjoy this exciting city. Overnight Berlin (B) Today, a coach tour will visit the expansive Soviet Memorial at Treptower Park and the Eastside Gallery, the largest remaining stretch of the Berlin Wall now converted into an open air art exhibit. Other sites will include Alexanderplatz, Karl-Marx Allee, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Wall Memorial. Entry to the DDR Museum provides an interactive look at life under communism. Tonight, there will be an included dinner and local cabaret performance, a Berlin tradition. Overnight Berlin (B, D) Above: The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, 2711 concrete blocks opened to the public in 2005. Below: Checkpoint Charlie, the former crossing point between the American and Soviet sectors of the city. Travel to the medieval walled city of Nuremberg by private coach. On arrival, your tour manager will lead an orientation walk through the town centre. Then, you will visit the underground bunkers used to store the city s priceless artworks during the WWII air raids. Dinner will be included in a traditional Bavarian restaurant. Overnight Berlin (B, D)

Nuremberg s rich Germanic and imperial history led to its selection as host of the annual Nazi Rallies from 1933 to 1938. Today, you will take a walking tour of what remains of the grounds, partly designed by Albert Speer, including the Congress Hall, Great Road and Zeppelinfeld. There will also be time to explore the Documentation Centre with audio guides. In the afternoon, learn about how the city has remade itself as a centre of human rights that began with the Nuremberg Trials at the end of WWII. A guided tour of the Memorium Nuremberg includes the place where the trials took place, Courtroom 600. Overnight Nuremberg (B) Above: The unfinished Nuremberg Congress Hall now houses an excellent Documentation Centre. Below: The beautiful Old Town Centre of medieval Nuremberg. Travel by coach to Dachau for a guided visit of the Concentration Camp Memorial site, dedicated to the memory of its victims. Continue on coach to Munich where you will view Third Reich sites on a walking tour of the city centre with a local guide. Tonight s included group dinner will be at the famous Hofbrauhaus beer hall. Overnight Munich (B, D) Today, transfer by private coach to Munich airport and fly to St Petersburg. On arrival, you will meet our academic expert Dr Matthew Dal Santo and enjoy an included group dinner. Overnight St Petersburg (B, D) Below Lenin s former headquarters, the Smolny Institute in St Petersburg. Dr Dal Santo will provide an introductory lecture as part of a half day coach tour of Revolutionary sites. It begins with a visit to the Smolny Insitute where Lenin declared the creation of the Bolshevik state. It remained Lenin s headquarters and the seat of his government until March 1918 (Please note: visits to the building can be cancelled at short notice). You will then view the Tauride Palace and Finland station en route to the Peter and Paul Fortress. Here you will see where revolutionaries were held in prison and where Nicholas and Alexandria were laid to rest. Overnight St Petersburg (B) Today you will visit the State Hermitage Museum, one of the largest and oldest art museums in the world, for a self-guided visit of the collections. The afternoon is free to explore the area around Nevsky Prospekt and visit the iconic Church of the Spilled Blood. Overnight St Petersburg (B)

The focus shifts to World War II history and in particular the 1944 siege of the city by the Germans. You will explore sites around the city, including significant memorials and cemeteries. Visit the Victory Square Museum, dedicated to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad, which has a short film presentation and contains weapons and soldiers belongings. In the evening, enjoy an included group dinner at the Vodka Room. Overnight St Petersburg (B, D) After check out, the high speed Sapsan train will have the group arriving in Moscow within 4 hours. There will be an included group dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight Moscow (B, D) Above: The Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad. Today begins with a morning visit to Red Square, including the Kremlin and St Basil s Cathedral. Using the Moscow Metro for transport will allow you to view stations containing marble decorations, stained glass, chandeliers and mosaics that stand as a testament to Stalinism. Travel 65 metres underground to visit The Cold War Museum located in Bunker-42; complete with KGB rooms, raid sirens and series of tunnels. In the late afternoon, Dr Dal Santo will present a lecture on Russia s Cold War before a free evening. Overnight Moscow (B) The tour will end after breakfast with an included transfer to the airport for your flight home. Above: Lenin s Mausoleum in Red Square. YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF BOOKING CONDITIONS DEPOSITS: A deposit of $500 per person is required to confirm your booking on a tour. Final payment of the tour fee, insurance and any additional travel will be due 60 days before departure. CANCELLATION FEES: If you decide to cancel your booking the following charges apply. More than 60 days before departure: $500 60-45 days before tour start: 25% of total amount due 44-15 days before tour start: 75% of total amount due 14 days or less before departure: 100% of total amount due UNUSED PORTIONS OF THE TOUR: We regret that refunds will not be given for any unused portions of the tour, such as meals, entry fees, accommodation, flights or transfers. PASSPORT AND VISA: A valid passport is required for all international travel. If you do not hold an Australian passport you may require a re-entry permit. If the number of participants in a tour is significantly less than budgeted, or if there is a significant change in exchange rates Academy Travel reserves the right to amend the advertised price. If this occurs you will be given the option of canceling your booking and obtaining a full refund. If an Academy Travel tour is forced to cancel you will get a full refund of all monies paid. WILL THE ITINERARY OR AIRLINE CHANGE? Occasionally circumstances beyond the control of Academy Travel make it necessary to change airline, hotel or to make slight amendments to daily itineraries.
