Grades: 6-8 Days: Monday - Friday Cost: $240 Time: 12:00pm 3:00pm Location: Memorial Hall Session I: July 24 July 28 (New) Congratulations, you've just been elected mayor of your city...now it's time to get to work! In this civics, writing and research program, students serve as mayor of a fictional city that they create. They must win re-election by pleasing their constituents, managing the city budget, writing a fair and just city constitution, responding to citizen concerns, delivering speeches and writing op-eds. In their re-election campaign, they create campaign platforms, bumper stickers and buttons that tout their own accomplishments as mayor and take positions on a set of city issues. Instructor: Right Brain Curriculum www.rightbraincurriculum.com In this debate and social studies program offered to 6th- 8th graders, students discover that they have just been named the new Director of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)! As they are briefed on clean water laws, pollution, car pool lanes, endangered species, overpopulation and other environmental issues, students will begin to prepare a report and presentation to the President, outlining the EPA's new policy in each area. Debating skills will also be featured in Green Power!, as students debate each environmental issue alternating between arguing their own point of view and being asked to represent a given stance. They will also receive "reports from the field," fictitious letters from citizens in which challenging environmental problems are raised for the consideration of the EPA Director (for instance, there is an endangered species living where a $100 million factory is going to be constructed. Should construction be halted?) Our students will be challenged to think critically and creatively in this informative and contemporary class. USTA QuickStart Tennis TENNIS PROGRAMS CRYSTAL STREET TENNIS COURTS Melrose Recreation is excited to bring back our Summer Tennis program. Last year over 250 participants bounced, dribbled, and rallied on our Crystal Street courts. The QuickStart Tennis program developed by the United States Tennis Association was a huge success last summer. QuickStart Tennis looked at the popularity of skateboarding and invented a way of learning tennis which emulates its fun and independence. Based on group dynamics instead of instructor-centric instruction the kids remain in motion. The goal of playing tennis is achieved through participation and not demonstration. QuickStart succeeds by using age appropriate balls and equipment aimed at making tennis fun and easy to learn. This summer s program will be inviting for new students as well as challenging to our returning players. Our new programs based on Quickstart will allow kids to feel they have graduated into another level. Whether it be beginners lessons or our new offering Drill and Play we hope to welcome as many adults to our programming as we have kids! ADULT PROGRAMS SPRING / SUMMER LEAUGES MELROSE See Page 48 for Pickleball Offerings! What is Pickleball? Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country. It is a fun and exciting (and addictive) racquet sport, which differs from tennis by utilizing a court a third the size of a tennis court. It is primarily played as a doubles sport which means each person only has to cover about ten feet of court side-to-side. The rules are few & simple and the game utilizes an underhand serve, perforated plastic ball and no-smash zone, seven feet in front of the net which allows for an easyto-learn sport. Players range up to the 80 s as placement is more effective than power. Description All beginners are welcome! This is a fun social league where skill levels vary in ability. Paddles and balls will be provided. Each court has a max of six participants assigned to it which allows for players to rotate in fairly quickly. Games typically last between 10 15 minutes before rotation. Games are almost always played as doubles competition. Sneakers are required The sport is played with wooden or composite paddles that are about twice the size of a ping pong paddle and a perforated plastic ball similar to a wiffle ball. New players generally pick up the game quickly and will be competing the first session. In partnership with the Melrose Council on Aging Melrose Recreation Dept.
