On arrival on the Friday night delegates will be familiarized with the ship and briefed on safety issues etc. After dinner there will be a workshop session as detailed below. On the Saturday the ships crew will sail the ship and the delegates will shadow their buddies throughout the day, learning first hand their roles and duties aboard. A number of exercises/challenges will be undertaken, the nature of which will be dictated by the prevailing weather conditions on the day.
On the Sunday the delegates will take charge of the ship and sail it as per the crew on the Saturday. The ships crew will then become the delegate s shadows, only intervening in the event that assistance is required or delegates are attempting something in an unsafe manner. Friday 18.00 * Assemble on board ship * Ship s officer will give briefing on format of event. * Delegates assessed and buddied-up with members of ship s crew. There are 12 ships crew on board. Assuming 17 delegates they will be buddied as follows: Delegate 1 with Captain in overall command of ship Delegate 2 with Chief Officer runs the ship/crew as per the captain s orders Delegate 3 with Second Officer/Navigator responsible for navigation & safety Delegate 4 with Engineer responsible for all mechanical & electrical systems aboard ship Delegate 5 with Cook (also standby Medic) - responsible for the preparation and serving of all meals, cleanliness, hygiene of the galley and all areas where food is stored. Standby Medic Delegate 6 with Bosun (also ship s Medic) responsible for the running of the upper deck, rig and sails and coordinating the deckhands - Goes aloft Delegate 7 with Bosun Mate the Bosun s right hand - Goes aloft Delegates 8 & 9 with deckhand work the deck & rig as per the Bosun s instructions. Go aloft. (also Safety Boat driver). Delegates 10 & 11 with deckhand as 8 (also Safety Boat bowman). Delegates 12 & 13 with deckhand as 8 Delegates 14 & 15 with deckhand as 8 Delegates 16 & 17 with deckhand as 8 * Delegates and crew introduce themselves, name tags issued. * Delegates assigned to cabins or hammocks as per their buddy. * Crew explain to delegates their duties and responsibilities aboard ship * Safety brief and familiarisation with the ship, topics covered will include: Rules onboard Safety alarms & emergencies Working aloft Fire extinguishers/blankets location.

Heads (toilets) and showers Ships Galley Cleaning routines 20.30 Delegates have workshop/tutorial with Captain & crew to cover: * The history of the ship and a little about Square Sail. * Command structure aboard the ship. * Explanation of the weather prognosis for the weekend. * Seasickness. * The mechanics of sailing a tall ship. * Question and Answer session. Approx 21.30 Remainder of evening free for drinks aboard to visit to local pub Saturday 06.30 Cook and cook s buddy up to prepare breakfast 07.30 Call all hands - Ablutions 08.00 Breakfast 08.30 Clean up 09.00 Depart harbour 09.15 Set sail Delegates will spend day learning the roles of their buddies. Depending on the weather conditions, any of the following may be undertaken as specific learning exercises during the course of the day: Departing the berth Stowing mooring lines Going aloft Reefing sails Setting square and fore-and-aft sails Launching and recovery of the ships boat Anchoring Weighing and stowing anchor Man Overboard drill Fire drill Abandon ship drill Stowing sails
Preparing for harbour entry Berthing 13.00 Anchor for lunch 14.00 Weigh anchor set sail again 19.00 Return to harbour or go to anchor for night. 19.30 Dinner 20.30 Delegates get together. * Discuss topics learnt during the day. * Planning session for Sunday sailing when delegates will assume control of the ship. Sunday DELEGATES IN CHARGE OF VESSEL FOR DAY: Delegates will be encouraged to think and make decisions for themselves regarding the running of the ship, though obviously they can consult with their buddies at any time for advice or confirmation of decisions and actions. The ship s crew will be briefed to only intervene if they deem it necessary for reasons of safety or to prevent potential damage to the ship. 06.30 Cook and cook s buddy up to prepare breakfast. 07.30 Call all hands. Ablutions 08.00 Breakfast 08.30 Clean up. During clean up, Delegate Captain, in consultation with Delegate Navigator, will analyze prevailing weather conditions for the day and accordingly decide a destination to sail to and anchor the ship for lunch. 09.00 Depart harbour 09.15 Set sail: whilst sailing, one of the previous days exercises to be replicated by the delegates. 12.30 Anchor for lunch. 13.30 Weigh anchor: Sail back to Weymouth. Conduct another of the previous day s exercises
