I get by with a little help from my friends John Lennon. Tammy Johnson has been having back problems and hasn t been dancing for a while. Please keep her in your thoughts as well as Fran Jasinski, Bob Benigar, and Henry Byle. I understand Henry might get to come to the dance again this month to visit everyone. Our sincere condolences and hugs go to Chris Burns, her Mother passed away Christmas day. More sad news about a friend of the Twirlers, Jim Deffenbacher passed on December 21 st, from complications of a stroke he suffered a week earlier. Our condolences go out to Joyce and their family. February Birthdays Ann Weston 2 nd Henry Byle 3 rd Penny Hayhurst 27 th We have No Anniversary Celebrations in February Keep our friends in our hearts, say a prayer, send them a card or give a call to show you care. Kindness is a great healer. Please keep all our friends in your thoughts this month and always. When you hear of someone who is not well or needs some cheer, let Linda Bezzina know @ 672-2498. Notes from Rosalie Have a great month! Linda Our December dance with Tony Oxendine was a total blow out in a good way. Joe & Vi Henderson greeted the many guests. Sue & Randy Gibson decorated the stage and brought the beautiful poinsettias. I've never dealt with such a huge turnout and so much food!!! I thought the maximum count would be 150...and we probably served 250. Four members cooked turkeys, and many brought 2 to 4 different dishes. What a beautiful array of wonderful food. Those helping with set up, clean up and in between were Ron Morris, Chris Burns, Steve Falgout, Barbara Canfield, Joyce Ingram, Ray Kellett, Gary and Ann Weston, Marie Hurte, Sandy Smith, Jim Kirsch, Nancy Welch, and Bob Alexander. Two students helped for the day, Diane Cashman and Leota Janzen, this let other members enjoy the dance. I hope I haven't missed anyone who pitched in. It was such a huge undertaking, especially without kitchen access, but it was a beautiful day and we were able to overflow onto the lakeside patio and around the fountain. Thanks to all who brought so much food (too much to list here) as well as the helpers. If you would like to help at a dance call Rosalie 244-0672. 50-50 Raffle Some have wondered about how the 50-50 Raffle works and what the money is used for. Here s the scoop This is a fundraiser for our club, as many other clubs too. Tickets are purchased from the Treasurer for money prizes. We take 50% of the total collected that goes back to the people buying the tickets by drawing ticket numbers, the club gets the other 50% which goes back into the general fund. There are also donated gift prizes too that are raffled. The money prize tickets are the first drawn. This is accomplished by the Treasurer going around and asking dancers or officials to draw tickets, then the same is done for the donated gifts. Winning tickets for all are posted during the dance. The same procedure is used for the workshop and class except that the winners are announced. Club money from the workshop and class goes toward the graduation and advancement parties. If you have other questions, please ask Jackie and Bill. January February 2010 Page 2

Happy New Year to all of our members! Our New Year s Resolution, one of them, is to stay healthy and see all of you dancing in 2011. We wish the same to all of you. We are looking forward to dancing this year. There is a continued need for members to support our Wednesday workshops, classes, monthly dances and visitations. Members, please make it a point to mark your calendars with these functions. If you have not danced in a while, come to the Wednesday workshop and get the rust worked out. The workshops are a fun way to brush up on your skills. You and your fellow dancers will have more fun. A WELL EARNED PAT ON THE BACK! Thank You to EVERYONE for making the December Dance such a success. Our guests had great things to say about the caller, the location, the poinsettia plants and the FOOD! Huge KUDOS to Rosalie and her workers, and all those who pitched in to help. It was a massive undertaking. We did great! At our January dance we will celebrate the Club s 37 th Anniversary! We would like to take this opportunity to say Thank You to our Board Members and appointees for all of your hard work this past year. Hello Everyone! Ahh, February. The month of Love. This, like November to me, is another month to thank those that I have in my life that I love dearly. It is also the month that, can be wacky and mess everyone up because of that silly spontaneously occurring extra day. Well, not so spontaneous but it can be difficult to keep track of. I hope you all enjoy your month and those that you love and that love you this month! We have many kind and generous club members! The donations of cash for shipping and items to supply the Boxes for Soldiers was very successful. When Randy & Sue took the donations to the Hemet Lodge, Gil Hodges, the representative was most appreciative and said to say Thank You to all that participated. Speaking of our generous club members, thank you for your donations to the Veteran s Memorial Fund. Your donations exceeded our goal, making it possible for The Twirlers to have a plaque in place at the Veteran s Memorial. A reminder for your calendars, the April and May dances have been moved to the FIRST Sunday of those months, due to the State Convention in April and Mother s Day in May. California State Convention is in San Diego this year, plan to attend April 8, 9 & 10, 2011. Did you know that each of you are welcome to join us at the monthly Board Meeting We re considering having an experienced clothing sale at our February dance or sometime this Spring. Please talk to any of our Board Members or email us at canyonlaketwirlers@gmail.com if you re interested in donating to the sale or helping out or buying. More details to come soon. A reminder that in February newsletter delivery will be electronic (by e-mail). You must inform me directly if you want paper. After this issue, only those that tell me that they would like a hard copy will be receiving one. Everyone else will only be getting a calendar as a hardcopy. This is in an effort to save the cost of paper and postage. Thank you for understanding. We are looking for businesses who would be interested in advertising in our monthly newsletter. This would greatly help to defray publishing costs for the club. If you know of someone, or yourself, who would have a business to advertise, we are developing a solicitation letter. Please call Ellie or Lorie for more information. Remember, ideas, photos or questions, info to include in Twitter, my e-mail is countryxmodel@yahoo.com and my phone number is (951) 750-4866. Deadline for our next issue is February 4 th. Happy Dancing! Ellie Abeles January February 2010 Page 5

The first class is free. Square Dance is making a come back! And Canyon Lake is where we want them to be with a great instructor and terrific club members! Did you know. In 1949, a group of far sighted men gathered seven clubs of the area together into an association for the purpose of fostering and promoting square dancing. These seven clubs represented areas in San Bernardino, Riverside and the East Los Angeles Area. In choosing the name for the association, they discovered that in the early days of California history, the legislators in Sacramento, who represented the area, were referred to as The Gentlemen from Cow Counties. It seemed appropriate that the association representing this area should also be known as the Cow Counties Hoedown Association (CCHA). The first hoedown was called a Stampede and was held on April 3, 1949 at the Urbita Ballroom. This ballroom was a landmark in San Bernardino, situated in a shaded park with a lake adding to the atmosphere. The primary purpose was and still is, To Foster and Promote Square Dancing. The term Square Dancing now includes round dancing, contra, clogging, line and western dancing as parts of the activity. The CCHA now holds a Hoedown Dance each 5 th Saturday of the month during the year. These Hoedown Dances draw dancers from many surrounding counties for a great dance. The members of the Cow Counties Hoedown Association are proud of their many achievements. Probably the most outstanding of these is the National Square Dance Convention which had its origin in Riverside in 1952. Little did those who planned that event realize to what proportions this annual affair would grow. California again had the honor of hosting the National Convention in 1976 when we celebrated the 25 th Anniversary of the National which was held in Anaheim, California. No Officer, Director or Representative of the CCHA receives any financial compensation for a year of very hard work. The real compensation comes from a feeling of having done something to keep square dancing the wholesome, clean, and noncommercial activity that it is. This is your Association - - - It exists to be of service to you. Volunteers are always needed and welcome in YOUR Club and in your Association January February 2010 Page 7
