On Jan. 23, 1920, the team travelled to Culver-Stockton for the school s firstever collegiate game. Truman grabbed a 15-10 halftime lead in that contest and would go on to win 41-21. Led by head coach H.L. McWilliams and captain George Caldwell, that squad won eight of 16 games in 1920. Over 80 years later, the Truman State University Bulldogs continue adding on to the basketball history that was started with that first squad. EARLY YEARS McWilliams would coach the team for six seasons, finishing.500 or better in four of those years. The most successful year came in 1920-21 when the team went 9-3, including a 9-1 mark to start the year. McWilliams was also the coach when the team started playing in Kirk Auditorium (now Kirk Building), the Bulldogs home court for the next 36 years. Don Faurot took over as head coach in 1925. Despite being better known for his work on the football field, he had success on the court as well. In nine seasons, he won 92 games and never finished worse than two games under.500. The best year under Faurot came in 1926-27 when the team, led by brothers Levi and Orval Craig, won six of the final seven games of the season and claimed the school s first conference championship. Following Faurot s departure, the Bulldogs had five coaches throughout the next 11 seasons (the 1943-44 season was skipped due to World War II). Most notable during that time was Malcolm Eiken s 1940-41 squad which won 18 games (against seven losses), the most for a Truman squad to that point. (Kirksville Daily Express, Sept. 26, 1920) KING ERA In 1946, two of the biggest developments in Truman s basketball history occurred. The first of those was the hiring of Boyd King who became the eighth men s basketball head coach at the school. He would also go on to become the greatest head coach in school history. Over the next 25 years, King won 379 games while only losing 200, a.655 winning percentage. His teams claimed seven MIAA championships and advanced to six national postseason tournaments. The second development was one of the players on Boyd s first team at Truman, Harry Gallatin. Gallatin had a great two-year career at Truman before an even better career in the NBA. He is still the only Bulldog to play in the NBA and did so well at that level, that he was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991. Gallatin was just one piece of the Bulldogs squads in 1946-47 and 1947-48 that were probably the most talented in school history and included other Bulldog greats like Robert Lewis and Earl Dodd. The 1946-47 squad ran off 19 straight wins to start the season before falling on the road to Southwest Missouri. The team quickly rebounded, won the remainder of its regular season games and brought home the first MIAA title to the school since 1927. That team earned a school-first when it was chosen to participate in the postseason National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament in Kansas City. Truman won the first two games before bowing out in the quarterfinals to Northern Arizona. The team ended the year with a 30-2 mark, the best record and most wins in school history. With the same personnel returning the following season, the Bulldogs won another MIAA title and another trip to the NAIB tournament. This time, Truman was tripped up by Arizona State in the first round, ending its year at 29-2. The Bulldogs were above.500 four of the next six years but even with a 16-4 mark in 1953-54, they couldn t capture an MIAA title. That changed in 1954-55 when Truman won its last 11 regular season games. That MIAA championship team was led by Jack Beck who became the first Truman player to earn first-team all-america honors. The last two wins were for a berth in the NAIA tournament which Truman advanced to for the third time and made it to the second-round. The Bulldogs won or shared the MIAA title the next two seasons as well and advanced to the The 1946-47 Bulldog team was one of the top squads in school history. second-round of the national tournament in 1956. The next few seasons brought two changes for the Bulldogs. The first occurred in 1957 when the MIAA and Truman jumped from the NAIA ranks to the NCAA College Division level. The second was in 1959 with the opening of Pershing Arena, the current home for Bulldogs basketball. The first game was played on Dec. 1 against Northern Iowa and Truman won 86-72 in front of an estimated crowd of 2,600. That first squad to play in Pershing Arena was arguably the most talented one since 1948. Larry Swift led that team and was one of the best shooters in school history. He earned first-team all-miaa honors for three years, all-america honors two years and averaged over 20 points a game throughout his career. He is still the last Bulldog to be named a first-team all-america. The 1959-60 team captured the MIAA title, the fourth for Truman in the previous six years, and advanced to its first NCAA tournament. Not only did the Bulldogs advance to the tournament but were selected as the host school for the regionals. Home-court advantage helped as the Bulldogs won the regional by a combined four points in two games. However, Truman couldn t get past the quarterfinals again, falling to Cornell (Iowa). King s teams went through a short dry spell after that championship team. The Bulldogs only finished above.500 five out of the next 10 years. King coached his final Truman team in 1970-71 and, like he deserved, went out a winner. Led by Charles Currie and Claude Wilson, that team went 18-9 and won King s seventh MIAA title. Truman again hosted the midwest regional tournament, but fell in the regional finals. SIMS ERA The man picked to follow King was one of his former players, two-time first-team all-miaa forward, Willard Sims. Like his predecessor, Sims would coach Truman for nearly a quarter century, win over 300 games (310) and coach several MIAA championship teams and national tournament qualifiers. Sims first four squads finished the season just above or just below the.500 mark. However, the last 28

0708MBB Media GuideWEB:07-08 Media Guide 11/1/07 9:46 AM Page 30 HISTORY squad in that string started an eight-year span in which the Bulldogs would finish above.500 for seven of those seasons and have some of the top teams under Sims. The 1975-76 squad finished the season with an 18-8 overall record and was 8-4 in the MIAA. The team finished two games behind Missouri-Rolla for the conference title with one of the Miners losses coming at the hands of the Bulldogs. Following 14-win and 15-win seasons, the next two years, Truman fielded another MIAA championship team. The 1978-79 squad, led by Ved Green and Terry Bussard, went 20-7 during the regular season and won the conference with a 9-3 mark. Truman was rewarded with a trip to the NCAA tournament where it lost in the regional first-round and then fell to MIAA rival Southeast Missouri in the consolation final. Following a rebuilding year in 1979-80, Truman was just 12-10 overall and 5-6 in league play following a loss to Missouri-St. Louis on Feb. 12, 1981. The Bulldogs caught fire then, winning the final three regular season games and winning three more after that to claim the first-ever MIAA postseason basketball tournament crown. The tournament win gave Truman an invitation to the NCAA tournament once again, with the Bulldogs winning the opening round game but falling in the regional finals. David Winslow was a senior on that 1980-81 team and ended his career as one of the all-time Bulldog greats. At the time, he was Truman s all-time scorer and rebounder. He is still fourth all-time in scoring and his 996 rebounds are the most in school history. The Bulldogs went 17-10 the following year and finished just two games out of the conference title race. Truman basketball took a downturn after that, finishing above.500 just once in the next 11 years and never finishing above.500 in conference play. One of the top players during those years was Steve Schieppe who scored 1,796 career points, the second-highest in school history. He is the Bulldogs top three-point shooter of all-time, making 300 three-point field goals. Winning ways returned quickly in 1993-94 as Truman went 18-9 and finished the MIAA season with an 11-5 mark. Sims final season was in 1994-95 and the Bulldogs made it an exciting one. Truman made a run for another MIAA title but lost two of its final three regular season games and finished 12-4 in MIAA play, just one game behind the co-leaders. PRESENT DAY Sims assistant coach Jack Schrader took over the reins in 1995-96, just the third Bulldog head coach over the last 50 years. Schrader s teams won six games his first year and 11 his second year. The 1997-98 squad appeared to be heading for another losing season but rallied to win six of the final seven regular season games and finished 14-13. At the time, no one realized that that winning streak was a sign of things to come. Truman s chances in the MIAA race in 1998-99 didn t look promising after it got off to a 4-4 start. The Bulldogs starting clicking however after that, winning the final eight regular season games including an upset win over Pittsburg State, the topranked team in the country at the time. The Bulldogs entered the MIAA tournament with a 19-6 record and a 12-4 MIAA mark. Following a home victory over Missouri Southern, the Bulldogs went on the road and knocked off Pittsburg State again. That win let Truman host Northwest Missouri for the MIAA Tournament title and for the second game in a row, the Bulldogs came away with a last second victory and its second MIAA tournament championship. Truman was sent to Wichita Falls, Texas, for the NCAA South Central Regional tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Bulldogs swept through the tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight. Truman had never advanced past the quarterfinal round in a national postseason tournament before and St. Rose stood in the way this time. One of the biggest Bulldog games in school history turned out to be one of their most exciting. The two teams went three overtimes before Truman escaped with a 106-101 win. In the semifinals, the Bulldogs fell down early and made a huge comeback. Unfortunately, it wasn t enough as Truman s season ended with a 26-7 record, one game short of the national championship game. Cory Parker and Jason Reinberg were the biggest reasons for the Bulldogs run that year. Parker ended his career as the leading scorer in school history with 1,835 points and he was second all-time in rebounds with 955. Reinberg, a two-time academic All-American, finished his career fifth on the scoring list and third on the rebounding charts. The evening was May 13, the place was Springfield, Mass., and the function was one of the most significant events in his life. Gallatin was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, joining such former National Basketball Association standouts as Bob Pettit, Oscar Robertson, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Walton. Other members of the 1991 induction class were college coach Bob Knight, former NBA guard Nate Tiny Archibald, former NBA center Dave Cowens, the late Larry Fleisher, who founded the NBA Players Association, and the late Larry O Brien, a former NBA commissioner. Gallatin, the only Truman alumnus who has played in the NBA, starred for a decade on the professional level. He performed nine seasons for the New York Knicks and his final year for the Detroit Pistons. At that time, he held the NBA record for consecutive games played (746) and was selected to compete in the first seven NBA all-star games, a feat only two other players, Dolph Schayes and Bob Cousy, can claim. Gallatin was named to the all- NBA team twice and performed in eight playoffs. In 1954, he led the NBA in rebounding with a 15.0 average. Gallatin was one of 25 candidates for the all-time NBA team after averaging 13.0 points and 11.3 rebounds a game for his career. While a member of the Knicks, he was dubbed The Horse because of his durability, aggressiveness and hard work. Gallatin s basketball career began in Roxana, Ill. where he was a good high school rebounder and helped his squad win a district championship. He was an all-district selection and served as a cocaptain of his team. He learned about Truman from the late Ralph Pink (a former Truman professor) who had watched him play in three-on-three pickup games. Pink recommended Gallatin to head coach Boyd King. As a Bulldog, he earned allconference accolades in 1946-47 and 1947-48 and was a NAIA All-America in 1947-48. Until the past two decades, Gallatin ranked in the top 10 on the all-time school single-season scoring list. Because they usually won by wide margins, Bulldog starters played only about half the time during games. Then too, Gallatin and several other players were good students and graduated from college in only two years. Consequently, they had little opportunity to rewrite school records. He ended his Bulldog career with 816 points. During Gallatin s collegiate career, Truman won 59 of 63 games, notched a pair of league titles and made two trips to the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City. The Bulldogs lost in the third round of the 1947 national tournament and in the second round of the 1948 tournament. They were the first Truman basketball team to advance to national competition, and they recorded the school s first MIAA basketball championship since 1926-27. Both squads posted 19 straight victories, the longest winning streak in the history of Bulldog basketball. The 1946-47 team compiled a school-record 30 victories. In recognition of his athletic ability, scholarship, leadership, citizenship and ambition, Gallatin received the 1948 Stickler Cup as a senior. When he first started his professional basketball career, he also played four years of baseball in the Chicago Cubs organization. Gallatin also competed in baseball while at Truman. After his retirement from professional basketball in 1958, Gallatin was appointed basketball coach at Southern Illinois- Carbondale, where he logged a fouryear record of 79-36. Then, he was hired to guide the St. Louis Hawks of the NBA, leading them to a 48-32 record in his first season at the helm. Gallatin was named 1962-63 NBA Coach of the Year. After a three-year stint with St. Louis, Gallatin returned to New York, this time as coach. However, his old team did not have a great deal of talent and was plagued by injuries, according to Gallatin, who stayed only two seasons with the Knicks. In 1967, he became Dean of Students at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, near his hometown. The administration asked him to organize intercollegiate athletics, and he started with soccer, basketball, baseball and golf. Gallatin coached basketball for two years and served as athletic director for five years. He took a full-time teaching position in 1972 at SIUE. A year later, he was named the men s golf coach, and his teams made 17 trips to the NCAA Division II National Championships including the 1991 Cougars who were ranked as high as sixth nationally. Gallatin is a former chairman of the Division II golf committee. He retired as an instructor in 1991 and as SIUE golf coach in 1992. Gallatin is a member of the Truman Hall of Fame, the Missouri Basketball Hall of Fame, the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame and the NAIA Hall of Fame. His Bulldog No. 44 jersey was retired on Jan. 20, 2001. 30
