Winners of the 2015 ATBA FALL SALES HEIDI S IN CHARGE With Jockey ISRAEL HERNANDEZ 2 year-old rallied to win the fillies division of the 2015 ATBA Fall Sales Stakes Futurity Heidi s In Charge is owned by Mark D. Breen and trained by Dan McFarlane Breeders: Cheryl & Harry Tosch Keshian Photo courtesy of coady photography Heidi s In Charge closed late on the pace setter Lieutenant Margie and took command in the final strides to win the fillies division of the 2015 ATBA Fall Sales Stakes Futurity. The pretty gray filly is conditioned by trainer Dan McFarlane and owned by Mark D. Breen. During her juvenile racing season she finished fourth in the Spring Sales Stakes at Turf Paradise and campaigned over the summer months in the mid-west at Prairie Meadows and Canterbury Downs competing with maiden special weight company. Back at her home racetrack in October she broke her maiden in a restricted Arizona-bred race for two-year old fillies and trained well into capturing the fall sales futurity. Breaking from the gate Lieutenant Margie broke sharply and set a 22.11 pace the first quarter, while Heidi s In Charge angled out nearing the eighth pole and drew clear by two lengths. An Arizona-bred bonus will be paid to Heidi s In Charge owner. Breeder s Cheryl & Harry Tosch Keshian of Boise, Idaho will earn a 10% bonus from the race and a breeders award at the end of the meet. Heidi s In Charge is sired by Ez Dreamer out of Sarah In Charge as was foaled in Arizona. Congratulations to the winning connections! It looked like a two horse race, until Autumn Blitz drew clear by 2 1/2 lengths nearing the wire and won the 2015 ATBA Fall Sales Stakes Futurity (Colts & Geldings Division). The colts & geldings division purse was $79,845.00. The winner s share was $51,304.00 and the final time of the 6 furlongs race was 1:10.38. .B.A. T. A fall yearling & mixed sale 2015 H orseshoe Park Equestrian Centre was this years new location for the ATBA Fall Yearling and Mixed Sale. Located in the town of Queen Creek, Arizona, Horseshoe Park Equestrian Centre is just a 30 minute drive south from the city of Scottsdale. We had a variety of yearlings offered by our consignors, some Arizona-breds, California-breds and a few Kentucky-bred pedigree s were cataloged. It was a sunny fall day and we had a lot of people turn out to preview the horses on sale day. With a hint of barbecue aroma in the air from Cutter s BBQ restaurant, the outside picnic tables were full of people tasting the menu specials prior to sale time, which was set to start at 2:00 p.m. We sold 77 yearlings, 5 racing age Thoroughbreds, and 6 broodmares. Our median prices were down from last year for yearlings, but this years average held at $6,652. The average for racing age Thoroughbreds was $1,160 and broodmare prices were up by almost eight hundred dollars with this years average at $1,166. Overall, the buyers found value in the pedigrees and many quality horse s sold for good prices. Fleming Thoroughbred Farm, LLC is our largest consignor every year and sold Hip#80 a chestnut filly by leading Arizona sire Margie s Wildcat out of Smart Start for $20,000 to Don Danard. Hip#88, a yearling filly named Thissideofheaven sold for $15,000 to Curt & Lila Lanning, LLC. The chestnut filly was consigned by the University of Arizona for Rafter Walking K., and a portion of the sale proceeds from the filly will be donated to the medical fund of disabled Jockey Anne Von Rosen. Anne was injured in a riding accident at Turf Paradise and has endured countless hours of therapy on her road to recovery. She has traveled many miles to places like Puerto Rico and has undergone surgeries, strength training and has gained valuable knowledge, as well as her independence with the help of medical specialists, doctor s and the designs of new technology. Thanks to Rafter Walker K, for their generous donation to Anne Von Rosen. Above Photo of Hip number 32, dark bay or brown filly by Wilburn / Complete Rule sold for $28,000. Consigned by H & E Ranch 10 Arizona Thoroughbred October/November/December

Above Photo of Hip Number 80, Chestnut Filly by Margie s Wildcat out of Smart Start Consigned by Fleming Thoroughbred Farm, LLC Turner Shiew signed for Hip#91 a gorgeous chestnut filly named Zindler, by Margie s Wildcat out of Treasure Town for $20,000. The sale topper was a dark bay or brown yearling filly, Hip# 32, by Wilburn out of Complete Rule. The Kentucky-bred filly was consigned by H & E Ranch and sold for $28,000 to Curt & Lila Lanning LLC. We are looking forward to seeing her begin her training season as a two-year old and race in the ATBA Spring and Fall Sales Stakes Futurities. Our leading buyer s this year were Curt & Lila Lanning, who also purchased two other yearlings from Fleming Thoroughbred Farms consignment. Hip# 25 a chestnut filly by Fappie s Notebook out of Ballet Babe for $14,000 and Hip#51 a dark bay or brown colt by Sierra Sunset out of Kalmaat (GB) for $10,000. The Lanning s purchased Autumn Blitz at last years ATBA Sale, who recently won the 2015 Fall Sales Stakes Futurity by 2 1/2 lengths dominating the colts and geldings division. We d like to wish the Lanning s and all of the buyer s from our Sale the best of racing luck with their new prospect s and we hope to see you in the winner s circle soon! Horse Syndications Are Coming Back? By John Alan Cohan, Attorney at Law Tax Court has recognized that horse racing or breeding is a highly speculative venture, but that an opportunity to earn a substantial ultimate profit in a highly speculative venture is ordinarily sufficient to indicate that the activity is engaged in for profit even though losses or only occasional small profits are actually generated. The possibility of just one successful racehorse or breeding champion could require purchasing a highly expensive animal or group of animals. Sometimes a syndicate is formed to pool resources and minimize the risks. Syndication is a way of getting involved in racing, breeding or competing on a much higher level than individual ownership. For the owner-manager, it provides funds with which to purchase a horse that otherwise might be unaffordable. For many years, fractional ownership has been a means of buying into horse racing and breeding opportunities. This was particularly active in the 1980 s and 1990s, when horse prices were steadily rising and more people wanted to join in earning profits. There are several kinds of syndicates, but in principle the people who buy into the deal become co-owners of fractional interests in the racehorse, show horse or stallion, as the case may be. A racing syndicate may take one of several forms. Typically, a specific racehorse is involved, and the manager is usually the owner of the horse. The syndicate members have decision-making powers, such as deciding when the horse will commence its racing career, be gelded, retire for breeding or stud duties, or whether to change the trainer or to sell the horse. Purses are distributed to members pro-rata on a monthly basis. In addition to the price of shares, members may be required to pay a monthly maintenance fee. Upon termination of the syndicate, the manager is to divide the proceeds among the members proportionately. If a horse is not a successful performer or is injured, each member s loss is limited to a fraction of the purchase price. On the breeding side, stallion syndications are a viable means of buying into a super-stallion and spreading the costs of ownership among a group of investors. With a breeding syndicate, a stallion, whether a retired racehorse or show stallion may be transferred into a syndicate, and syndicate members (co-owners) are entitled to one free nomination per season. Members may choose to sell their annual nominations, and eventually a share in profits should the horse be sold. The entrepreneur who establishes the venture manages these syndicates. Each party is entitled to separately report tax deductions for costs and depreciation. A syndicate agreement will state whether the horse is or is not insured. Members may obtain mortality insurance, however, on their individual fractional interests. The legal structure of the syndicate is usually a partnership, tenancy in common, or LLC entity. Syndicates entitle people who are new to the horse industry to gradually get started in an activity that takes could end up be very rewarding, with a minimal outlay of cash. Some syndicates have a set time frame, such as a year in which the horse will be raced, purse money distributed, and the horse sold at the end of the period. This enables investors to minimize risks, get earnings sooner rather than later, and often may involve a relatively modest investment, depending on the fair market value of the horse. It is always important to know the qualifications of the syndicate manager, and to check out the pedigree and record of the individual horse or horses involved. Syndicate agreements are usually fairly straightforward documents, but an attorney should always review them. Tax benefits may vary, depending on the type of agreement. For example, some racing syndicates are structured as limited partnerships, which may have a different allocation of tax benefits than a typical breeding syndicate. But generally, the co-owners may realize tax deductions for depreciation of their fractional interests and for maintenance fees. ATTENTION! ARIZONA STALLION OWNERS Keep your Stallions progeny eligible! Stallion owners: Any stallion that stands the entire breeding season in Arizona, and files a copy of the The Jockey Club Report of Mares bred for that breeding season with the ATBA office, that stallion (s) offspring will be eligible to race in the Stallion Stakes Derby. What this means to you as a stallion owner: All 2016 foals of Arizona Stallions (standing the full 2015 breeding season in Arizona) will be eligible to enter the 2019 Stallion Stakes Derby. This should create an exciting race as there are no early nominations, or late fees. Stallion owners must send a copy of the Jockey Club Report of Mares Bred to the ATBA office each breeding season. This is mandatory if your stallions offspring is to have the opportunity to participate. Foals need not be Arizona-bred, but must be by a stallion standing the full season in Arizona and a copy of the Report of Mares bred on file with the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders office. The Arizona Stallion Stakes Derby is a restricted race for the offspring of Arizona Stallions. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call the ATBA office, (602) 942-1310 30 Arizona Thoroughbred October/November/December
