Girls Individual Tournament Overview: The 2011 WPIAL Girls Individual Chamionship Golf Tournament will begin with sectional qualifying on Tuesday,September 20 or Wednesday, September 21, 2011. The Girls Individual final will be held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. All WPIAL Individual Tournament play is conducted under the rules of the USGA and will use eighteen (18) holes of stroke play to determine qualifiers for the next round. Detailed qualifying information is contained in the remainder of this document. Girls Sectional Qualifiers (General Information): Each sectional qualifier will be played at a course secured by the host team. The opportunity to host the section tournament will be rotated in an equitable manner. A listing of the host schools and sectional courses for 2010/2011 is posted on the our website at www.wpial.org. The Athletic Director of each host school will be the game manager at the site and will be responsible for the following items: A.) B.) C.) D.) E.) Communicating appropriate information to the respective section schools. Informing the host golf course of the recommended distance and set of tees to be played for the tournament as dictated by the WPIAL Golf Steering Committee. Making sure that the course rating to be used in establishing the 20-shot qualifying score is checked and communicated to all participating coaches and players. Each participating school will be required to provide school employees (coach, ass t coach, AD, etc.) to serve as markers with each and every participating group of players to verify the scores and assist with the pace of play. Each competing group must have an adult marker present. Parents will not be permitted to serve as markers. Establishing tee times and pairings for the tournament and communicating those times/pairings to the visiting teams. NOTE: Rounds will be postponed only if courses are closed by official action. In the event that this occurs, the host school should secure a rain date in advance for a day later in the same week to complete that segment of the tournament. If the same course cannot be secured, an alternate course should be secured. Eighteen holes of stroke play must be completed. - 1 -

Sectional Qualifiers (Entry / Format): Each section qualifier will be comprised of five (5) players from each section team. It is expected that these players are qualified to play tournament golf, have knowledge of the rules of golf and practice proper golf etiquette. Coaches of schools fielding a golf team must furnish the names and grades of their entries to the site manager (athletic director) of the host school no later than Thursday, September 15, 2011. Member schools not fielding a team in WPIAL competition may enter one (1) golfer who is capable of playing tournament golf, has knowledge of the rules of golf and practices proper etiquette. All independent golfers must be accompanied by a professional employee of the school district or a designated coach (in writing) who must remain for the duration of the event. In the event a school has more than one golfer that wants to enter, the school must determine the best golfer in a head-to-head competition. Athletic directors from the non-team schools must submit the full name (correct spelling), grade and average 18 hole score of their player, in writing, to the WPIAL office no later than Tuesday, September 6, 2011. The League Office will assign these entries to a sectional qualifying site. Please Note: Only entries from the non-team schools need to be sent to the WPIAL. Coaches and sponsors are not permitted to play but will remain at the first tee to assist the game manager. Please have your players at the tee fifteen minutes prior to the assigned tee time. Coaches and sponsors will be assigned a duty to assist the game manager. Failure to show up or complete your duty will result in the disqualification of your player(s). Caddies will NOT be permitted. Motorized golf carts are not permitted. Tee entries will NOT be permitted. Girls Sectional Qualifiers (Qualifying Criteria): In order for a player to advance from the sectional round to the championship round, they must meet the following criteria: 1.) Place in the top five scores (including ties) at their sectional qualifying site OR 2.) Shoot the designated target score* for their qualifying site. * The designated target score is 20 shots from the USGA course rating of the course being played. NOTE: The WPIAL Golf Steering Committee will set all designated target scores and inform the host athletic director of the target score required to qualify. Each site host will be informed ahead of time of the distance, tee boxes to be used, and the course rating to be used for their particular site. FOR EXAMPLE: If the sectional qualifying site is Cranberry Highlands GC, players would play from the cranberry tees at 5,497 yards for a course rating of 65.8 (66.0). In order to qualify at that site, a player must be in the top five scores or post a score of 86 or better. All players who post a score 86 or lower qualify for the final round. However, each section is guaranteed five (5) qualifiers even if those five (5) qualifiers shoot higher than the target score. - 2 -

WPIAL Girls Individual Championship (Entry / Format): Individual Championship: Longue Vue Country Club Tuesday October 4th,2011 412-793-2375 NOTE: Please be on time to avoid disqualification. Starting times will be assigned and can be obtained from the WPIAL Office on the Friday preceding the event. Girls Individual Championship (General Information): The individual championship round will consist of all qualifiers from all Division 1 and Division 2 sectional tournaments based on the criteria set forth for sectional qualifying. The top scorer among Division 1 and Division 2 golfers will be declared the Division 1 and Division 2 champion respectively. The top three finishers in each division will be awarded a gold, silver and bronze medal. The tournament will consist of 18 holes of stroke play. In addition to the top 3 golfers in each division, all qualifiers to the PIAA tournament series will be awarded a copper medal.. The top twelve (12) players from the WPIAL final round will qualify to represent the WPIAL in the Western PIAA individual qualifying round with qualifiers from five (5) other PIAA western districts on: Mondayday, October 18, 2010 at Tom s Run Golf Course at Chesnut Ridge, Blairsville, PA..The players finishing next in order will determine alternates to the state regional qualifier after the 12 qualifiers. Ties for the final qualifying spot will be broken with sudden victory extra holes. The top eleven (11) players from the regional qualifying round will qualify for the PIAA state championship tournament to be held at Heritage Hills Golf Course, York PA, on October 24 and 25, 2011. IMPORTANT NO ENTRY WILL BE PERMITTED TO COMPETE UNLESS THEY ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEE OR A DESIGNATED COACH (IN WRITING) FROM THEIR SCHOOL DISTRICT. ALL COACHES AND/OR SPONSORS MUST REMAIN AT THE SITE FOR THE DURATION OF THE TOURNAMENT. Coaches and players must register together on arrival and report to the game manager. Failure to report will result in disqualification of player(s). At that time, coaches will receive assignments as markers and observers. Food /beverages will be available to purchase at the golf course or you may bring lunches for participants. Please police the area to make sure it is as clean as it was when we arrived. Girls Team Championship (General Information): The top two teams and ties for second place in each section will enter the girls team semi -finals on Monday, October 10, 2011. If two teams tie for second place, but one of the teams has lost both head-to-head contests, that team WILL NOT enter the tournament. The WPIAL Golf Committee will assign qualifying teams to semi-final sites.the top three teams from each semi-final site will advance to the championship round. The top team and runner-up in each division will be the WPIAL team champion for their respective division and will be awarded team champion and runner-up trophies. Any conflict which may occur between the WPIAL championship dates and the regularly scheduled section matches should be resolved by the member schools rescheduling the section matches to another date. Girls playing on boys teams are permitted to play from the red tees (approx. 85% of the total distance from the white tees). In the event of a tie in the girls team semi-final championship round for the Champion or Runnerup positions, the following procedure will be followed: 1. Each coach of the tied teams will select two players to participate in a two hole play-off. 2. If a tie still persists after two holes, sudden death extra holes will be played until the final qualifiers are determined. 3. The total score of both golfers will be used to determine the winner of the two hole play-off and sudden death holes if needed. The top team from the WPIAL (Division 1 or Division 2) team championship will qualify to represent the WPIAL in the Western PIAA qualifying round with qualifiers from five (5) other PIAA western districts on: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at Tom s Run Golf Course at Chesnut Ridge, Blairsville, PA. The top two (2) teams from the Western Regional Qualifier will advance to the PIAA team championship at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, PA on October 24 and 25, 2011. The WPIAL will provide Division 1 and Division 2 golfers with an opportunity to compete for an individual championship in each division.the sectional qualifiers will be followed by three Division 1 semi-final qualifiers to be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Division 2 sectional qualifiers will compete in A Division 2 individual final on Monday, September 26, 2011. The boys Division 1 Individual final will be held on Wednesday, October 5, 2011. All WPIAL Individual Tournament play is conducted under the rules of the USGA and will use eighteen (18) holes of stroke play to determine qualifiers for the next round. Qualifiers must be submitted no later than 12:00 NOON on the day following the tournament. Please submit in a legible manner with correct spelling of names. Boys Individual Championship (General Information): The final round will consist of forty-eight (48) contestants. Thirty-six contestants must qualify for the championship via the Division 1 sectional and semi-final qualifiers.twelve (12) contestants will quailify from the Division 2 individual championship. The top twelve (12) players from each of the semi-final sites and the Division 2 individual final will advance to the championship. Ties for the final qualifying spot will be broken with sudden victory extra holes. The tournament will consist of 18 holes of stroke play. The top three Division 1 finishers will be awarded a gold, silver and bronze medal. In addition to the top three golfers in each division, all qualifiers to the PIAA tournament will receive a copper medal. The top twenty-four (24) players from the WPIAL Division 1 final round will qualify to represent the WPIAL in the Western PIAA individual qualifying round with qualifiers from five (5) other PIAA western districts on: Tuesay, October 18, 2011 at Tom s Run Golf Course at Chesnut Ridge, Blairsville, PA..The players finishing next in order will determine alternates to the state regional qualifier after the 24 qualifiers. Ties for the final qualifying spot will be broken with sudden victory extra holes. The top twenty- two (22) players from the regional qualifying round will qualify for the PIAA state championship tournament to be held at Heritage Hills Golf Course, York PA, on October 24 and 25, 2010. IMPORTANT NO ENTRY WILL BE PERMITTED TO COMPETE UNLESS THEY ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEE OR A DESIGNATED COACH (IN WRITING) FROM THEIR SCHOOL DISTRICT. If two teams tie for second place, but one of the teams has lost both head-to-head contests, that team WILL NOT enter the tournament. The WPIAL Golf Committee will assign qualifying teams to semi-final sites.the top three teams from each semi-final site will advance to the championship round. The top team and runner-up in each division will be the WPIAL team champion for their respective division and will be awarded team champion and runner-up trophies. Any conflict which may occur between the WPIAL championship dates and the regularly scheduled section matches should be resolved by the member schools rescheduling the section matches to another date. In the event of a tie in the boys team championship semifinal round for the final qualifying spot for the team final round, the following procedure will be followed: 1. Each coach of the tied teams will select two players to participate in a two hole play-off. 2. If a tie still persists after two holes, sudden death extra holes will be played until the final qualifiers are determined. 3. The total score of both golfers will be used to determine the winner of the two hole play-off and sudden death holes if needed. -9-

The top two (2) teams from the Western Regional Qualifier will advance to the PIAA team championship at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York, PA on October 24 and 25, 2011. WPIAL Golf Championships (General Information): Alternates are selected from each round of the individual tournament series by designating the player finishing next in order after the actual qualifiers have been determined. However, the alternates will only be permitted to play in the next round in the event of the withdrawal of an actual qualifier. It is the responsibility of the withdrawing player s coach to notify the site manager ASAP so that alternates may be properly notified. Coaches and spectators who choose to walk the course with the contestants must comply with the following: Do not offer comments to the players. No coaching. Coaches may make comments to their own players during team play only. Do not approach the players nearer than twenty-five (25) yards from behind the group being observed. Do not cross over tees, fairways or putting greens during play. Observe from cart paths or the rough. Follow the rules of golf etiquette while players are addressing the ball. Do not attempt to apply the rules of golf. For all events, please be on time to avoid disqualification. Under no circumstances are spectators permitted to use motorized carts WPIAL GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP DRESS CODE (NO EXCEPTIONS) All contestants are required to wear appropriate golf attire in accordance with generally accepted golf standards. School issued uniforms (collared or mock shirts, golf hat or visor) are required in individual and team competitions. Since some schools do not issue golf uniforms, contestants from these schools are required to wear matching shirts and hats in the school colors while competing in individual and team competitions.. Contestants may choose to wear either golf shorts or slacks (cargo shorts or pants excluded) provided that they are of an appropriate length. While hats are not required, players who select to use them must wear hats or visors of the same style and color. T-shirts, altered apparel, and advertisements (other than one visible trademark/school logo or school name not exceeding 2-1/4 square inches on a shirt, cap or pants) will not be permitted. Appropriate sweaters, jackets, and sweatshirts may be worn over the golf shirt when weather is a factor.

USE OF RANGE FINDERS The WPIAL and PIAA permit the use of rangefinders during individual and team competition subject to the following: Range finders that measure distance only are approved for use. Rangefinders that measure slope, wind speed, temperature, etc. are not approved for use. Hand held or mechanized GPS units are not approved for use. Coaches are not permitted to use GPS units to give yardage to their players. The sharing of yardage information among players is approved but not required. The penalty for the use or possession of non-approved devices is disqualification. All rules specified on the attached WPIAL GOLF EVENT-OFFICIAL PLAYER AND COACHES RULES must be adhered to. Please copy and make available to all players and coaches involved in your golf program.
