THIS WEEK S NEWS, NOTES AND NUMBERS: THE BOSTON BRUINS WEEK AHEAD APRIL 22 APRIL 29 THOMAS NAMED VEZINA FINALIST: The NHL announced today that Boston Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas is one of three finalists for the 2010-11 Vezina Trophy. Voted on by the league s 30 NHL General Managers, the Vezina Trophy is awarded annually to the goaltender adjudged to be the best at his position. The other finalists for the award are Vancouver s Roberto Luongo and Nashville s Pekka Rinne. This season, Thomas broke the NHL record for single-season save percentage with a mark of.938, besting the previous record of.937 set by Dominik Hasek in the 1998-99 season (save percentage was first introduced to the NHL statistics package in the 1982-83 season). Thomas had a record of 35-11-9 in 57 games this season, and had a GAA of 2.00. FERENCE FINED: Andrew Ference was fined $2,500 for an obscene gesture made during Game 4 of the team s Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series with the Montreal Canadiens Thursday night at the Bell Centre. The incident was reviewed by NHL Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations Mike Murphy. I was pumping my fist. I m not giving anyone the bird or anything like that, said Ference. Like I told them [reporters after Game 4], it was an unintentional bird. I obviously apologize for it, it wasn t meant to insult anybody, especially a whole row of cameras in the Bell Centre and the fans sitting there. That s definitely not the intention. GAME 6 START TIME CONFIRMED: Game 6 will start at 7:00 p.m. ET at the Bell Centre in Montreal. FAN FEST CANCELLED: Please be advised that due to inclement weather the SBLI Fan Fest scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. NORRIS NOMINEES MONDAY: The NHL will announce the nominees for the Norris Trophy on Monday, April 25. ALL TIED UP: The B s and Habs are deadlocked at two games apiece in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarterfinal Series. The road team has taken every game of the series, with the visitors outscoring the hosts 14-7 in the process. Mike Cammalleri leads the Canadiens with 2-5=7 totals, and Patrice Bergeron leads the Black and Gold with 2-3=5 totals. Bergeron has also won 63.1% of his faceoffs through the first four games. Former Hab Michael Ryder scored the overtime game-winner in Game 4, and had 2-1=3 totals in the game. The teams return to the ice on Saturday night at the TD Garden (7:00 p.m., TV: NESN, VERSUS, CBC, RDS, RADIO: 98.5 The Sports Hub). NOT SO SPECIAL TEAMS: Both teams have struggled on the power play, with Boston going 0-12 and Montreal going 2-14. The Bruins are the only team this postseason that has not scored a power play goal, and their 12 opportunities are the fewest in the league. During the regular season, Montreal had surrendered the most power play opportunities against with 327. MAKE HISTORY OR BE HISTORY: The Bruins are trying to rally from an 0-2 series deficit to win a best-of-seven series for the first time in franchise history. They are 0-26 all time when losing the first two games of a series. Montreal has twice recently taken a 2-0 series lead and gone on to lose the next four games of a series. In 1996, the Habs took the first two games on the road against the New York Rangers before losing the next four games. In 2006, Montreal again took the first two games of the series on the road against Mark Recchi and the Carolina

Hurricanes, before the Canes stormed back to win the next four. That year, Carolina went on to win the Stanley Cup. The Bruins made history in 2008, when Montreal led Boston three games to one in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, and the B s forced a Game 7 after being down 3-1 for the first time in franchise history. MOVING THE PUCK: Nine of the ten goals scored by the Bruins in this series have had two assists. The only goal they scored that only had one assist was Rich Peverley s goal in Game 3, where the assist came from Mark Recchi. P-BRUINS COACHING NOTE: Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli announced today that the club has decided to not renew the contract of Providence Bruins Head Coach Rob Murray. He has been offered a position in the Bruins organization in another capacity. No further decisions have been made regarding the other members of the Providence Bruins coaching staff. 71 STRAIGHT: The Bruins ended the 2010-11 regular season having sold out 71 consecutive home games at the TD Garden. The Bruins sold out every regular and postseason game during the 2010 calendar year, the first time the organization has done so since the 1972 calendar year. 1ST GOAL POOL ON TWITTER: 1ST GOAL POOL ON TWITTER: Congrats to the following followers of @NHLBruins who correctly guessed Patrice Bergeron as the Bruins first goal scorer during the Bruins/Canadiens game on Saturday: @_irunondanielle, @AlexandraSalmon, @hangingsox. @bish1966, @sbruce73, @xokathryn_, @resin21, @perkup15, @Jperkins15, @Giannirulz27, @NCarpenito, @Giannasca17, @eabouch, @HankETonkman, @ctsaknop1, @bruinsgirl37, @brandydmo, @Bruinsguy, @wadeo55, @myabnormallife, @hollisterkid4 Bergeron scored the first Bruins goal at 7:38 of the second period on Saturday. The player then wears the jacket in the locker room during the media access period and hangs it in his stall until the team s next win. After the next win, he will select a different teammate to pass it along to. Here is the tally thus far: 3/22 vs. NJ: Milan Lucic
