Do You Have Questions About Vikettes? Well, We Have the Answers! What if I have never danced before? To prepare for the Vikette Drill Team in 8 th grade, we encourage you to enroll in a studio drill prep and/or jazz class to prepare for the spring tryouts or at a local studio. We are happy to recommend a dependable studio for Vikette hopefuls. If you do not make Vikettes your 9 th grade year or opt out and wish to try out for your 10 th grade year, Drill Prep Dance Class (Drill Team Fundamentals) is offered to learn the basics of dance and help prepare for the expectations of Drill Team in 9 th or 10 th grade (2 semesters in length, 1 P.E. credit). The Vikettes drill team also serves to develop skills to prepare students for participation in drill team at the senior high school level. What will I learn in the Drill Prep class if I take it my 9 th grade year? The students will learn kick technique, jazz technique, split technique, and learn pom, kick, lyrical, hip hop and jazz routines. They also participate in a mock tryout to prepare them for the actual audition. When are the Vikette auditions, and what do I need to know? Tryouts for Vikettes are held in the spring semester of each school year (Usually the week after spring break). Candidates are judged on a jazz routine, kick routine, and splits. An average score of 70 from the judges is required to make the team. The higher averaged score of the two days will be the one that counts towards your final score. The Vikettes drill team can have up to 55 members on the team. Is there Vikette Practice every day? Yes, there is practice every day during the Vikettes Drill Team class period, which is 7 th period, and after school until around 6pm. Very occasionally, Vikettes will have to stay later or have Saturday rehearsals if learning a show piece. Will Vikettes take up a lot of my time? Vikettes can be very time consuming, especially if a Line Officer position is acquired/held. There is a mandatory summer camp and summer practices as well. There is practice every day during the school year, as well as evening performances and other scheduled planning and practice time which are all mandatory. Saturday practices are scattered throughout the year, especially during Spring Show season. Think of this as a commitment much like Marching Band, but instead after school. Are there other leadership positions other than Vikette officer that are available? Yes, members of the drill team who do not have a Line Officer title, are able to try out for the Vikette Select Team, Vikette Valor Kick Line, or for a position as a Social Officer.
What is worn to practice each day? An assigned outfit will be worn to practice daily. These assigned outfits will be ordered as a team and paid for individually after the new Vikettes are selected. Does being a Vikette incur a cost/fee? Yes, the allotted amount to be spent is around $670.00 plus the cost of Line Camp, which is $400. Other items are optional. What performances and activities will I be able to participate in as a Vikette? All Vikettes will be required to attend Pre-Camp Practice, Line Camp, and Post-Camp Practice during the summer. Vikettes participate in many fundraising opportunities throughout the year, during the week and on weekends in order to raise money for Spring Show costumes, stage lighting, and decorations, the Christmas luncheon, and the End of the Year Banquet! The Vikettes perform at the half time of 5 Vines home football games and max of 3 Vines home basketball games. In addition, they could perform at a Plano Senior High Basketball game as well. They also perform at all of the Vines pep rallies. They perform in the Plano Senior High Homecoming Parade, the Central JV Drill Team Cluster Game, the Senior Side Cluster Game, Wilson and Haggard assemblies, Plano Christmas Parade and they enjoy their own Christmas luncheon following the parade. They also help with the new Vikette tryouts and get everything organized and ready for Spring Show. The Vikettes will perform multiple numbers in their Spring Show, including but not limited to the Opener, Finale, and other various routines. The Vikettes also attend (if the school calendar allows) an annual field trip to the World Famous Kilgore College Rangerette Spring Show REVELS in the spring of every year. This trip includes a bus ride to Kilgore College, a tour of the campus, Rangerette dormitory, Rangerette Museum, dinner with the Rangerettes, a ticket to Revels, and a bus ride home to Plano. ***For answers to more questions, contact the Vikette Director, Nicole Dillon, at nicole.dillon@pisd.edu or call 469-752-7996.
