DURBIN CROSSING POND PRESS Happy 4 th of July, Durbin Crossing Residents! Our yards are bright green, and it seems like the only way to maintain control is to drag the lawn mower from the garage every other day. Our shrubs are blooming, and the ponds are growing as well. Besides the submersed aquatic vegetation that the grass carp are munching away on, the most common form of pond vegetation is algae. These species photosynthesize like terrestrial plants but take their nutrients from the water around them rather than directly from the soil. They are rootless, but can anchor themselves onto the pond bottom or other substrates. Some algal species are filamentous, which means their cells form long strands as they grow. This often looks like bright green hair on the bottom of your ponds, but sometimes filamentous algae ends up forming large mats on the surface. Filamentous algae is often unsightly but can become a hazard for the pond if it completely covers the surface of the pond; effectively stopping oxygen from penetrating the water's surface, which can create anoxic conditions. Other algae species are planktonic, which means that the algae cells are free floating within the water column, or are individual cells that are contained within a mucous. This can turn an entire pond an opaque green, but other times can be limited to a colorful film or scum on the water s surface. That being said, algae is not only green: it can also be red, orange, or blue-green in color. Planktonic algae blooms can cause problems if they 'crash' after large rain events or even just at night, which drops the oxygen levels in the ponds and can lead to fish kills. How can you help to keep the ponds throughout our community looking and performing at their best, you ask? The best way to combat algae is to make sure to limit the amount of nutrients going into your ponds. Don t fertilize within 20 ft. of the ponds edge, angle lawn mowers up, so that grass clippings go into the yard rather than into the pond, and make sure to follow best management practices to avoid over-watering your lawns. We assure you we that we are equipped to identify and treat all of the above forms of algae. We are committed to keeping all 58 of Durbin Crossings ponds in top condition! We wish you and your family a SAFE and HAPPY 4th of July!

Attention ALL Durbin Residents, IMPORTANT POLICY REMINDERS Please note, that your Durbin Crossing Amenity Center staff are very excited and proud to serve you. We work hard to make sure your amenities are clean, warm, welcoming and ready for use, when you are ready! Whether you are able to come to the amenities daily, monthly or just when all of the planets align, we want to make it great. To see residents enjoying the amenities, the Norman Rockwell atmosphere we strive to provide and making memories right here, is priceless. However, we need a bit of help to keep the dream alive, please. We would like to remind you of a few VERY important Amenity policies and procedures: Proper swimming apparel is necessary to ensure a pleasant swimming experience for ALL! When deciding what swimsuit to wear to either Durbin pool, please consider that this is a family, community pool. Should the swimsuit you choose NOT cover all the appropriate parts you may be asked to leave the facility. So, please leave that new, adorable, slightly risqué suit for the beach. Thank you for understanding and cooperation. Your DC access card is mandatory to enter the pools, gym, tennis courts, all amenities. If you have lost your card - replacement cards may be purchased for $25, cash or check only please. It just takes a couple of minutes to get a replacement card, at the South Amenity Center. If you are a new resident who has not yet obtained your cards, please call the South Amenity Center office for full details on what is required, 904-230-2011. We look forward to meeting you. The age to enter either pool facility, North or South, without an adult is 15 years of age, no exceptions. Please note, that ages will be checked at the front gates. Failure to adhere to this policy or falsifying information can result in the loss of Amenity privileges. The age to enter the gym without an adult is 16 years of age. Again, ages checked upon entry. The age to enter the gym with an adult, 18 years or older, is 12 years of age. You are allowed to bring up to five guests per visit to either pool facility. Please sign your guest(s) in upon entry. Guests are tracked from Spring Break to Labor Day weekend and you are allowed 24 complimentary guests during that time frame. Also, you must remain with your guest(s) for the duration of their visit. We would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation. We are a growing community and would like to maintain that small town, family friendly atmosphere we have all grown accustomed to. We look forward to seeing you on your next visit. www.durbincrossingliving.com 4

Florida is the lightning capital of the United States and it is ranked as the number one state for deaths due to lightning. Did you know that lightning kills more people in the U.S. than hurricanes and tornadoes combined? Lightning travels at the speed of light, while thunder travels at the speed of sound. A single bolt of lightning can discharge about 100 million bolts of electricity and can travel as far as 10 miles from a cloud. It does not need to be dark directly overhead. If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance! It has been known to travel through clear air and strike 10 miles from the storm like a bolt out of the blue! Lightning is actually 5 times hotter than the sun s surface! With all of this knowledge and critical information we d like to remind you of Durbin Crossing s thunderstorm policy. If we hear thunder or see lightning, we will close the facility for 30 minutes. Every time thunder is heard or lightning is seen, the clock is restarted to 30 minutes. This is strictly enforced for your safety! No life is worth the risk! *Stay tuned to our Twitter feed for up to the minute pool closures and information; @dcamenities Crisp, B. (n.d.). RECIPE CORNER FUN Red, White & Blue Cupcake Cones Bring these to your 4th of July party - or try them year round! Ice cream cones White cake mix with blue food coloring or pre-made blue cake mix Bake the cake mix according to the box. If you re using white cake mix, then simply add some blue food coloring to the mix before baking it. Fill each cone about 1/2 full of batter. Place cones in the cups of a cupcake pan or on cookie sheets. Bake at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) for 15 to 18 minutes. www.durbincrossingliving.com For the buttercream frosting you will need: 3 cups of powdered sugar 1/3 cup of softened butter 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract 2 tablespoons of milk (more or less depending on the consistency you want) An electric mixer Large zip lock bag Frosting tips (optional) To make homemade butter cream frosting, simply combine the softened butter with the powdered sugar. Once it is mixed, add in the milk. Using either an official frosting bag with a fancy tip, or just a zip lock bag with the corner cut off, pipe the frosting onto the top of the cones. I even think you could be REALLY smart and buy some pre-made white frosting if you re short on time (aren t well all?). Add a red cherry on top and you are DONE! 31
