Special Bulletins from Crystal The Balancing Act! No one likes swimming in acid water. It burns the skin and irritates the eyes. This is just one of the many reasons we recommend testing your pool water at least once a week. The PH (measure of acidity and alkalinity) of pool water should be maintained between 7.2 and 7.6. In this range, which is a little alkaline, the chlorine sanitizer works the best and the pool equipment will last the longest. One of the quickest ways to destroy a heater, or ruin a liner, is to run the pool in an acid condition. If the PH of the water goes too high, the water can turn cloudy, scaling on the liner can occur, and the sanitizer will be ineffective. It is also important to maintain the Total Alkalinity between 80-120ppm, the calcium level between 200-400ppm, and the conditioner (chlorine stabilizer) level between 30-100ppm. The Total Alkalinity, which is a reading of the amount of carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides in the water, has a direct bearing on the PH of the water. If the Total Alkalinity is, it is very difficult to maintain the 7.2-7.6 PH. At a calcium level of 200-400ppm, the water is considered hard water, and it is less likely to attack the pool s equipment. That is why Crystal Pools recommends bypassing the water softener if possible when adding make-up water. If you have a low cyanuric acid level, the ultraviolet sunlight will react with the chlorine molecule and dissipate the chlorine very rapidly from the pool; thus costing you a lot more money to sanitize your pool effectively. A properly balanced pool will keep your Crystal pool investment trouble free for years, and reduce the amount of chemicals needed to keep that pool Crystal clear. Remember, we also test pool water at no charge. Just bring in at least a pint so we can do all the tests. Safety Checklist For Safe Handling & Storage Of Pool Chemicals 4 Store all chemicals in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area 4 Keep containers upright and tightly closed. Always reclose after using. 4 Never mix unlike chemicals together and segregate them when storing to prevent interacting. 4 Keep away from combustible materials and avoid contamination with any foreign matter. 4 Follow good housekeeping. Clean up spilled material promptly. Never return spilled material to the original container: dispose by flushing with water. 4 Keep chemicals away from open flames. Do not smoke in storage areas or while handling chemicals. 4 Read all labels carefully. 4 Never add water to chemicals: add chemicals to water when mixing. 4 Rinse out empty containers with water, and then dispose. A helpful preventative maintenance is to clean the inside of your filter at least once a year. This means if you have a DE Perflex filter (bump handle style) you need to remove the bolts or band from around the filter head, pull out the tube nest of nylon fingers and hose it thoroughly. If you have a DE grid filter, first open the vent valve to release any pressure in the tank. Then, loosen the center band and remove from the center of the tank. Separate the filter and examine the grids. Open the bottom drain valve and spray any caked on DE powder. You can also remove each one of the grids and clean separately by removing the top collector manifold. Note how the grids are assembled in the nest before removing. Recommended: A garden hose and nozzle are all you need to clean the DE powder from the filter.
