Sport Sport has always been a major part of school life, one afternoon each week being set aside for a variety of sporting activities. In the early years cricket, football (rugby league), hockey, basketball (now called netball) and tennis were the only sports offered, but as time went on many others were introduced. Swimming was held at the weir pool in Campbell Park until the swimming pool was opened in 1958. It s worthwhile noting that, while it was never a recognised sport, students were always enthusiastic about handball in the boys quad. The annual athletics carnival saw fierce competition between the Houses, Hunter, Oxley, Sturt and Wentworth to gain most points and be Champion House. For some years, in addition to the field and track events, there was a marching competition and a tug-o-war was always popular. Ball games such as captain ball, tunnel ball and under and over were fiercely contested and the girls only teams practised for weeks prior to the carnival. The Triangular, a competition originally between Inverell, Glen Innes and Armidale and later between Inverell, Glen Innes and Tenterfield, was eagerly anticipated each year. It was a three-day event with the venue rotating between the schools. All the popular sports were on the program but the football final was the premier event, accompanied by loud barracking from all the schools with Inverell s war cry, Boom, Ziggah, Boom easily the loudest. The last Triangular was held at Glen Innes in 1966 and Inverell won the Fayle Trophy for the 5th consecutive year; as the 1960s the competition became very unequal as Inverell had outgrown the other two schools.this competition was replaced by a two-day visit (supposedly non-competitive) with Armidale High, which included additional activities such as debating and chess. Teams have also competed enthusiastically in the annual All Schools Carnival, with hundreds of students from around the area utilising all available sporting venues. The level of competition in major sports has increased dramatically over the years and students vie for State honours in almost every area of sporting activity. Boys and girls can choose from Rugby League, Rugby Union, Soccer, Touch, Netball, Basketball, Softball, Cricket, Tennis, Horse Sports, Cross Country, Hockey, Athletics and Swimming. Many teams and individuals have had success in Regional and State Competitions. Inverell High is the 2011 recipient of the Regional Award for Excellence in Sports Education.
