Editorial We are only into mid February, yet the 2016 year already feels well advanced. Having attended a meet held in Brisbane each weekend since the start of the new year and the four meets held to date on the Gold Coast, most Saturdays and Sundays have been well and truly booked. At those meets I have viewed a resurgence in both the number of attendees as well as in the quality of performances. The number of athletes competing at the Brisbane meet on Saturday, 13 February, was 92, the highest number this season and, it would appear, the highest number for quite a few years. Whilst QMA membership is yet to reach last season s final figure the Association has received 92 new (or pre 2014/15 re-activated) memberships. Whilst a number of last season s members have not renewed their membership this season almost all of the new arrivals are competing athletes, hence the noticeable increase in numbers at meets. Leading into the nationals in Adelaide, the Qld & AMA Marathon Championships, the state championships in Townsville and the World Championships in Perth, we should see the consistently high number of competitors maintained. As most of you will have noted from attendance at meets, QMA facebook posts and Ian Mann s excellent, weekly Competition Reports, the months of January and February have seen a large number of Queensland and Australian track & field records set across all events. January 23, when the 4 x 1500m relays were held, showcased the best of Masters competition. Whilst records (including a new Australian record and world best recorded time by a M60 team) were set the day also contained great emotion and atmosphere as a result of the large support base viewing the competitors. Whilst Masters athletes compete for a number of reasons, the prospect of records being broken (particularly if an announcement is made beforehand) raises interest and support levels across both competitors and spectators. Competitors, particularly the runners, will note that the last four QMA Brisbane meets (including the Wednesday night meet on 23 March) have been moved across the road to the main stadium. It is obvious to all that the state of the SAF track continues to deteriorate and the uncertainty over the future of the track (will it be resurfaced or not) should be of concern to both the QMA Management Committee and the Brisbane Region Committee as the main stadium is not always an available to us due to the requests on access to it from little athletics, schools and QA. Hopefully the SAF track will be replaced in time for next season. Many of you will have heard that Kate and I will be departing in mid year for Adelaide. This is my penultimate magazine (the last will be in April following the nationals) which means that the Association is seeking a replacement Editor (and magazine producer and distributor). If you have an interest in that area please let me know so that I can facilitate a smooth handover. Unless a replacement for me is found, obviously, the magazine will cease production. From the President In this first edition of Challenge for 2016, I want to ask you all a question: Just what is QMA all about? I can hear your answers that QMA is about running, jumping, walking and throwing and heading off to championships. That is all correct, but really it is only part of the story and part of your potential experience as a member. As a self-managing organisation, we run our own competitions and manage our own business affairs. And, as a selffunded organisation, we rely on members to run our competitions and manage our business. Managing the QMA business We have recently had two resignations from the QMA Management Team and with the coming departure of Viddy Jermacans (our Registrar and Challenge editor) and Kate Jenkins (assistant editor), we have some big gaps in the Management Team. Further, I am hoping to step down from the role of President at the AGM in June and hand over other roles I am currently doing. So we are going to need members to fill the following roles: President Vice president Registrar Challenge editor Webmaster Facebook page manager Out of stadia co-ordinator We certainly need people to fill these roles in June, but hopefully before then, so new members can be learning what is involved in the jobs. Please don t take the attitude someone will put their hand up! If you have relevant skills to fill any of these roles, PLEASE PUT YOUR HAND UP! Training/mentoring will be provided where required. Running our QMA Competitions Whichever Region you compete in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast or up there in North Queensland your competition meets are organised and run by volunteers. Some volunteers are qualified officials and know the rules for the various events, but for many of you (I know this is the case in Brisbane) being called on to assist with events is a whole new experience, particularly if it is not an event you yourself compete in. GREAT NEWS! The Australian Sports Commission on-line education scheme is now up and running and available to everybody to learn the rules of your sport, your events, & make you a much more competent volunteer/official when it is your turn on the roster. Further, you will become familiar with the rules for the events that you compete in! I would like to encourage all QMA members to take advantage of this opportunity its free, you do it on line in your own time and get a certificate for your efforts. For more information Athletics Australia website OFFICIALS EDUCATION Or click this link: http://www.athletics.com.au/officials/education I am planning to add a page to the QMA website with more information. Members, there is certainly more to QMA than simply competition and even more than I have mentioned above. Please get in touch if you want more information. QMA Brisbane Region News The record number of athletes participating in this season s competition continues 92 last Saturday (13 February). It is encouraging to note that the increase is quite eevnly spread over all events. Also increasing is the number of new records being set. Very impressive! The committee thanks the regular crew and rostered members for all the hard work necessary to ensure our competition runs smoothly. Well done all. A special thank you to Travis Venema for the Starts coaching session last weekend. By popular demand Travis has agreed to repeat the session again this Saturday (20 February). This is an opportunity not to be missed by sprinters. Please note that the next two competitions (23 rd and 27 th February) will still be held on the SAF track. However, competitions on 5, 12 & 23 March will be held in the main stadium. The 23 March meet is a Wednesday night meet. The Saturday, 2 nd of April meet will also be held at the main stadium. With the increased participation in relays it has been decided that for all relays which are not completely run in lanes, coloured bibs shall be worn. This will ensure correct identification by officials. Congratulations to all participants and well done to our many new record holders. John Wight Secretary, QMA Brisbane Region Left: Ganga Prasad on his approach run in the high jump event, Saturday 13 February. Right: Long term QMA member, John Musters, clears the bar on his way to a height of 1.30 in the M60 age category of the high jump. Gold Coast & Southern Region News Meets at the Griffith University track continue to be well supported across all events with numerous pbs achieved by QMA members. In addition, a number of Queensland and Australian Masters records have been broken since the start of the new year. January 17, was Super Sunday with three new Australian records being set in the women s Track & Field Pentathlon. Carol Davis, in her first Pentathlon, set a new point score in the W60 age category of 3,417. Wilma Perkins achieved 3,720 points in the W65 for a new record, whilst Marge Allison broke the W70 record with a point score of 3,437. Wilma s and Marge s versatility and longevity in multi event competition was on display that day as they added new Australian records to their already impressive collection. Wilma still holds Australian records in the Pentathlon set in 1984 (W30), 1986 (W35) and 2004 (W55). Marge is the current record holder in the W60 Heptathlon. A number of athletes from the Brisbane Region and the Sunshine Coast & Northern Region are competing with the locals at the regular Gold Coast meets (particularly the sprinters) to take advantage of the excellent track condition as well as the (usual) tail winds in the home strait. The number of throwers competing remains strong whilst the walkers retain their numbers each meet. ADVICE FOR ADELAIDE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 1. Get your entry in as soon as possible! Entries close 11 th March. 2. Make sure you have a Queensland uniform, or at least a singlet. The old one will be acceptable this year, but if you want to compete in our bright and shiny new one, you will need to get your order in as soon as possible (see below). 3. Ensure you have made your travel and accommodation arrangements. Team Manager Viddy Jermacans will be the contact person for Queenslanders competing in the AMA Championships in Adelaide. If you have any queries leading into, or during, the Championships, contact:- viddy48@yahoo.com.au or on 0407 188721 or at the Brisbane & Gold Coast tracks on competition days. Viddy and Julie Brims will facilitate the Qld relay teams for the 4x100m and 4x400m. Athletes will be contacted to ascertain interest in running in one or both relays. However, feel free to approach Viddy & Julie to express your interest in competing. Note: The 4x400m has been moved from its traditional 4 th day to be run on the 3 rd day which is also the same day as the 4x100m relay (Monday 18, April). The distance hurdle races have been transferred from the traditional 3 rd day to the 4 th day (Tuesday). TIPS FOR TOWNSVILLE QMA CHAMPIONSHIPS 1. Note the change of dates the championships will now start after 5 pm on Friday evening, 3 rd June and continue through Saturday and Sunday. 2. Information and a draft program are on the ANQ website here: http://www.athleticsnorthqld.org.au/competition/anq-student-games-and-all-comers-championships 3. Watch the QMA website and e-news for information about entries and closing dates. 4. Remember to check your travel arrangements if you find you have an event on Friday evening. Special Mention The Multi Events (Decathlon/Heptathlon) being held on Saturday and Sunday are not part of the QMA Championships, nor is the Weight Pentathlon. They are open to Masters athletes but are part of the All Comers competition. POINTERS FOR PERTH WORLD MASTERS ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS 1. Entries will be open soon, and will close in August 2. You will need to be a financial member of QMA when you submit your entry. 3. You will also need to be financial to compete, which means you will need to renew your QMA membership promptly at the beginning of October (QMA 2015/16 season ends 30 September, 2016). 4. You will need a current Australian uniform, or at least a singlet, to compete. Information about Australian uniforms is on the AMA website order as soon as you can to ensure delivery in time. 5. If you rely on certain medications that may be on the banned substances list, you will need to obtain a Therapeutic Use Exemption. Athlete of the Month Award The awards for the months of January and February 2016, feature two athletes with considerably diverse backgrounds in athletic upbringing but with recent similar outcomes, ie. extremely high levels of performance on the track with resultant record breaking achievements at a national level. January 2016 Carol Davis Carol turned up at her first meet on the Gold Coast in early September 2014. This was her first (ever) competition on an athletic track under race meet conditions. Whilst having no track background at all, Carol has been an accomplished sportsperson and active, distance, park runner, winning races on the Gold Coast. Carol also advised me that she had won a few parents races at school meets, including one which resulted in her winning a bottle of champagne. Carol s performances at her first meet in the 60-64 age category were as follows:- 200m (35.07) and 600m (2.10.58). At her second meet on Gold Coast track Carol ran the 60m (9.92), 100m (15.80), 300m (55.65) & 800m (3.10.20). In the next few meets that she competed in, Carol concentrated on distance races with a 1500m time of 6.30.36 and (on the same day) a 400m time of 74.85. Whilst mixing her distances, it became obvious to a few people that there was considerable, untapped potential in Carol as (primarily) a sprinter. She took a set of blocks home to practice and started to use them in races (departing from her previous practice of standing starts). With diligent training and taking on tips from other runners she proceeded to improve her race times on a regular basis. In December last year, Carol expressed an interest in undertaking a Track & Field Pentathlon and commenced training with a discus and javelin. This culminated in her competing in a T&F Pentathlon on the Gold Coast in mid January this year and in which she smashed the existing Australian W60 record with a score of 3,417 points (the previous record was 2,128 points). On the day, Carol was only 7 days short of her 65 th birthday. A week later (on her 65 th birthday) Carol proceeded to lower the W65 Australian records in the 60m to 9.12 (previous record 9.23) and the 100m to 14.61 (previous 14.66). On the same day she also lowered the Australian 200m record to 30.40 (current 30.87) but the wind reading was in excess of 2 metres per second. In addition to the above, Carol has improved her times for a variety of distances to put her in touch of a number of other Australian records, eg. 400m (70.17 as a late 64 year old which is better than the current record of 70.23 for the W65 category), 800 in 2.55.53 as the last event of the Pentathlon (record is 2.55.36 held by champion athlete, Marge Allison) and the 1500m in 6.19.61 (which she has not run for some time). One more challenge for Carol.. the hurdles!! If she could master the (yet to be attempted) 80m hurdles she has the potential to become a world class heptathlete. Whilst not everyone who takes up Masters athletics will achieve outcomes to the extent that Carol has, her results certainly indicate that anything is possible with determined application and a strong support base. Carol Davis, Wilma Perkins & Marge Allison, together, after breaking Australian T&F Pentathlon records in the W60, W65 & W70, all in the one day in competition on the Gold Coast in January 2016 (see results on page 17). Athlete of the Month Award February 2016 Adrienne McIvor Whilst most observers will have marvelled at Adrienne s recent 400m and 800m performances, she actually commenced her junior track career as a 400m hurdler. In competition, at the national level, Adrienne (Rainbird) was the Junior T&F 400m hurdle champion for 1987/88 in 59.65, second in 1988/89, third at the senior level that season (61.68) and was again the Junior champion for 1899/90 in a time of 59.28. Combining university studies with athletics, in Ontario, Canada, in July 1988, Adrienne represented Australia in World Juniors in the 400m hurdles running 61.99 secs in a heat but missing qualification to the next round. In the 1992/93 Australian season, she placed 2 nd in the national, open 400m hurdles, with a time of 58.04. After a break of some years, Adrienne again competed with placings in the 1998/99 season championships (3 rd with a time of 57.27) and 1990/00 championships (3 rd in 57.68). Switching to middle distance running, Adrienne re-appeared at the 2001/02 nationals in the 800m, running 3 rd in a time of 2.03.25. The winner of the race that year, in 2.00.88, was Tamsyn Manou (Lewis) who was on a streak of six consecutive national 800m wins. Tamsyn went on to win a further four titles in subsequent championships. Adrienne joined QMA in November 2013 in the W40 category. Since turning 45 late last year, she has performed brilliantly in competition over 400m and 800m with resultant Australian records for both distances. On 9 January this year, at a QMA Brisbane meet, Adrienne sprinted the 400m in 57.11 which eclipsed the long standing (1989) Australian record of 57.80 previously held by Queensland s Jan Hynes. That night, she further improved her 400m time at a QA meet, lowering her time to 56.89. The world record time for W45 400m is 56.15. Last Saturday (13 Feb), Adrienne ran a brilliant race in windy conditions at the SAF to set a new Australian record in the W45 800m. Her time of 2.11.19 lowered the previous record of 2.13.13 set in 1999 by Queensland s champion athlete, Jeanette Flynn. An exciting 9-10 months lies ahead for Adrienne with the nationals to be held in Adelaide in April, followed up by the World Championships in Perth in October-November.
