1. Background BASKETBALL AUSTRALIA STANDARDS FOR THE NOMINATION OF OFFICIALS 2012 AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM LONDON As required under Clause 8.4 of the AOC Team Selection By-Law, an NF may only nominate to the AOC persons it considers suitable for selection as officials of a Team but in doing so will only nominate those persons it believes: 1.1 are suitable and qualified to fill the required positions in respect of the section of the Team concerning the sport controlled by the NF; 1.2 whose capabilities, skills and experience accord with the requirements of the AOC as advised from time to time; and 1.3 who will work efficiently and harmoniously with the Chef de Mission of the relevant Team appointed by the AOC. NFs must not nominate anyone who cannot fully satisfy the standards of conduct and behaviour required of each member of the Australian Olympic Team as detailed in the Team Membership Agreement Officials. 2. Positions to be nominated 2.1 Subject to the final staff allocation numbers, Basketball Australia will nominate to the AOC persons to undertake the following positions: Men s Team: Section Manager Head Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Technical Assistant Coach Doctor Physiotherapist Women s Team: Section Manager Head Coach Assistant Coach Assistant Coach Technical Assistant Coach Doctor Physiotherapist
Section Managers: 2.2 The AOC determines the requirements for the Section Managers. Basketball Australia will nominate a Section Manager for each of the Men s and Women s Teams in accordance with the Section Manager Candidate requirements determined by the AOC. Medical Personnel: 2.3 The AOC determines the headquarters medical personnel. Sport specific medical personnel to be nominated by Basketball Australia must be deemed suitable for nomination by the AOC Medical Commission in accordance with the AOC Medical Personnel Candidate Guidelines (for Doctors, Physiotherapists and Massage Therapists. Coaches and Support Personnel: 2.4 Persons undertaking the role of Head Coach will need to meet the requirements of the Head Coach Job Description (Attachment 1) as they relate to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team Basketball. 2.5 Persons undertaking the role of Assistant Coach will need to meet the requirements of the Assistant Coach Job Description (Attachment 2) as they relate to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team Basketball. 2.6 Persons undertaking the role of Technical Assistant Coach will need to meet the requirements of the Technical Assistant Coach Job Description (Attachment 3) as they relate to the 2012 Australian Olympic Team Basketball. The nomination of these positions will be conditional on Officials meeting the prerequisite behaviour prescribed by the AOC Selection By Law. 3. Nomination of Coaches and Support Personnel If the positions are approved, Basketball Australia will nominate to the AOC the current National Men s and National Women s Head Coach, Assistant Coaches, Technical Assistant Coach, Doctor and Physiotherapist holding these positions on the National Teams (at the time of nomination). The Doctors and Physiotherapists positions are conditional to 2.3 above. 4. Selection of Officials by the AOC 4.1 The selection by the AOC of officials to the Olympic Team will be solely conducted by the AOC in its absolute discretion. 4.2 The final number and type of officials positions will be determined by the AOC in its sole and absolute discretion. 4.3 The AOC may advise Basketball Australia in respect of the Team of the AOC s determination of the number of officials that may be selected as members of the Team and the positions available to officials. Any requirements of the AOC concerning officials are guidelines only and are not nomination or selection criteria. The AOC may amend these requirements at any stage, whether generally or specifically to an individual official s position.
4.4 Basketball Australia will implement a proper process to identify those officials that it will nominate to the AOC fully satisfying the AOC s requirements and the standards established by Basketball Australia to govern the nomination of officials. 4.5 The AOC may select any person as an official of the Team and is not obliged to follow the nominations of Basketball Australia. 4.6 Selection of each official will be conditional upon him or her signing the applicable Team Membership Agreement for the Team to which the official is selected. 4.7 There is no appeal against any official s selection or non-selection by the AOC.
ATTACHMENT 1 Basketball Head Coach Job Description Qualities for Selection The head coach must be able to demonstrate: Ability to provide a high quality elite program for the Australian Senior Men s or Women s Team Maintain a coherent and open selection system for the National Senior Team in line with the Basketball Australia Nomination Criteria Effective communication and dialogue with National Basketball League/Women s National Basketball League coaches regarding the national team s program, its style of play, and the desirable skills for players in the program. Experience as a Head Coach in international basketball competition Ability to work with Basketball Australia and relevant stakeholders to produce a basketball infrastructure to create a squad of basketballers and support staff that will be capable of continuing Australia s performances beyond the 2012 Olympic Games. Responsibilities The head coach will be responsible for: The performance of the Australian Senior Team in international competition. providing advice into the selection of support staff for the team; management of the team s support staff including defining clear roles and responsibilities for all staff within the team; preparation of the team s program, in consultation with High Performance General Manager and Basketball Australia staff the preparation of the team, including the conduct of training camps; regular communication with all athletes selected in the squad particularly those athletes based overseas this contact to be both face to face as well as use of technology attend all meetings of the team s leadership group being involved in the final selection of all national senior team athletes
coaching the team during games; representing the team with media as required; preparing and submitting reports on each competition activity and providing reports on the team s progress as required; all other areas which are relevant to the team s on-court performance; Maintaining a close liaison with Basketball Australia on the strategic direction of the National team program in relation to player development, program delivery, coaching, technical and scientific advances, resource development and competition.
ATTACHMENT 2 Basketball Assistant Coach Job Description Qualities for Selection The Assistant Coach must be able to demonstrate: experience with an elite basketball team preferably in a head coach position available to attend all camps and games played both in Australia and overseas from time to time ability to utilise video analysis equipment and prepare scouting material as required by the head coach excellent communication skills both in dealing with other coaching staff and athletes understanding and experience in international basketball competition including current trends and styles Responsibilities The assistant coach will be responsible for assisting the head coach, including: the selection of athletes for the squad and final team; assisting in the preparation of the team, including the organisation and conduct of training camps; assisting the head coach during games; providing input into the team s program; all other areas which are seen by the head coach to be relevant to the team s performance.
ATTACHMENT 3 Basketball Technical Assistant Coach Job Description Qualities for Selection: The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate: ability to prepare videotape breakdowns of all offensive and defensive systems and plays of the Australian team and opposition teams. must also acquire current and past statistical evidence and assess the strengths and weaknesses of all opponents. all materials, written and in video format, must be prepared in a manner that fits the criteria set down by the Head Coach and be presented in a style that is appropriate to both the coaches and the players. experience with an elite basketball team preferably in a head coach position understanding and experience in international basketball competition including current trends and styles Responsibilities The successful candidate will be responsible for: preparation of all scouting material as required by the Head Coach preparation of video analysis of all athletes in the national team squad preparation of video analysis of all opponents in tournaments preparation of video analysis from all training camps member of the selection committee for the squad and final team assist in the preparation of the team including the organisation and conduct of training camps as required by the head coach responsible for all technical equipment required for the team and preparation of all scouting material
