Beginning his sixth season, Jason Hooten has compiled a 98-69 record as Sam Houston head coach. The last two years, his team has won 50 games the most in consecutive seasons at Sam Houston since the mid-1970s. The Kats have finished as league regular season runner-up, reached the Southland tournament finals and played in the CollegeInsider.com post-season event both those years. 2015-16 Outlook In 2015-16, Hooten and his staff face the challenge of replacing four starters who each earned All-Southland Conference honors last year. Seven new players (one freshman and six transfers) join the team this season. As a coaching staff, I think we got spoiled last year with 11 guys back from a 20-plus win season, Hooten said. They knew all the drills and our terminology and had bought into our philosophy. This year, we re basically starting over at ground zero. No matter where you have played before, there s always new things to learn. But the new guys are very receptive. The newcomers include junior college transfers 6-1 Jalin Barnes (Barton County), 6-5 Torry Butler (Three Rivers Community College), 6-4 Ameer Jackson (Dodge City), 6-8 Andre Sands (Casper College) and 6-0 Jovante Spivey (South Georgia State). Cameron Delaney, a 6-4 transfer from the University of Denver, and 6-9 Marc Fortin, a freshman from Quebec City, Quebec in Canada. As a team, I think we re faster and more athletic this year, Hooten said. I think we have a team as talented as last year s and that we can play faster than we did last sesaon. We averaged 75 points a game. That was good enough to rank us 30th in the nation in scoring. We can continue that pace. Last year s Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year, 6-11 Michael Holyfield, is now with the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA. While Hooten does have a player in the lineup as tall as Holyfield, the head coach believes that size inside will be a team strength. Aurimas Majauskas, a 6-8 junior who has been Holyfield s backup the past two seasons; 6-7 sophomore Jesse Lopez and 6-6 redshirt freshman Albert Almanza return to join Sands and Fortin under the basket. Paul Baxter is the lone senior on the 2015-16 Bearkat squad. A threeyear starter, Baxter is a first team preseason all-league selection.

We have more depth with good size, Hooten said. Our wings are bigger than the last couple of years as well. Aurimas is a talented offensive player. We ll be trying to get the ball inside more this year. The head coach sees leadership as a team strength as well in 2015-16. Paul Baxter, a 6-2 senior guard, has started each of his three years as a Bearkat. Dakarai Henderson, a 6-2 junior guard, was the Bearkats first player off the bench last season. Jamal Williams, a 6-4 sophomore, also was a key reserve. Joining Almanza as a red-shirt freshman is Josh Delaney, a 6-0 guard and younger brother of transfer Cameron Delaney. We re very happy with the way the veterans have come back this fall, Hooten said. Aurimas has worked hard and has become more athletic. Paul has always been a great leader and he has stepped it up even more as a senior. Dakarai is much improved both offensively and defensively. Jamal has shown a great work ethic as well. Both the red-shirts bring something to the table. Albert is a good shooter and Josh is another leader for us. As with any year that you have a lot of new players mixed with your veterans, we re a work in progress. We have added a lot offensively. With Michael Holyfield gone, our interior defense will be a key factor. We ll find out a lot about ourselves during a challenging non-conference schedule. Head Coach Jason Hooten Sam Houston State University has compiled eight 20-victory seasons in its 28 years at the NCAA Division I level. Jason Hooten has been a part of six of those eight seasons either as head coach or as an assistant. Since he joined the staff in July 2004, the Bearkats have compiled a record of 225 wins and only 126 losses. The Sam Houston men have earned Southland tournament berths each of his 11 years in Huntsville. The Kats won the event in 2010, reached the finals in 2006, 2014 and 2015 and the semifinals seven times. Southland Conference champions in 2010, Sam Houston has finished among the top three teams in the league nine of the last 11 years. The Kats won three West Division titles and advanced to national post-season play three times. Named head coach on April 2, 2010, Hooten has directed Sam Houston to a 98-69 overall record including back-to-back 20-win seasons the past two years (24-11 in 2014 and 26-9 last season). Hooten s Bearkats have made their third and fourth NCAA Division I post-season appearances in 2014 and 2015, reaching the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in both years. Sam Houston s CIT opening round victories over Alabama State two years ago and UNC-Wilmington last season represented Sam Houston s first two NCAA post-season victories. The past three seasons have seen the Kats make their mark at the annual Southland tournament in Katy. Seeded No. 6 in 2013, Sam Houston battled its way to the semifinals, defeating No. 7 seed Central Arkansas 69-63 and No. 3 seed Oral Roberts 58-55 before falling to the eventual tournament champion Northwestern State 55-52. Victories over Oral Roberts and A&M-Corpus Christi in 2014 and another win over the Islanders last year have propeled the Kats into the finals in their last two trips to Katy. Sam Houston Men s Basketball www.gobearkats.com

In his first season as Bearkat head coach in 2011, Hooten directed the Bearkats to their third consecutive Southland Conference West Division championship and the program s seventh consecutive winning season. The Bearkats 18 wins represented the most victories by a first-year head coach in the program s NCAA Division I history. As an assistant coach, Hooten helped direct Sam Houston to a 127-59 record. The 2010 Bearkats won the Southland regular season and tournament titles to earn a berth the NCAA New Orleans regional. Hooten joined the SHSU staff July 1, 2004. In 2009, RecruitingRumors.com selected Hooten as one of the top 100 NCAA assistant coaches and CollegeInsider.com named him Mid-Major Top 25 assistant coaches honorable mention. Previously, he was assistant basketball coach at Tarleton State University for Lonn Reisman. He helped lead the Texans to a combined 204-111 record. A 1987 graduate of Killeen Ellison High School, Hooten lettered in basketball and baseball. He earned All-CenTex and All-Super CenTex honors. Hooten has been named as a Killeen ISD Distinguished Alum. Hooten holds two degrees from Tarleton State, earning a bachelor s degree in exercise and sport studies in 1993 and a master s in 1995. He is married to the former Kristen Miller. The pair have a daughter, Jadyn, and a son Jayce. Jason Hooten Career Record AS HEAD COACH - Won 98, Lost 58 Year Team...W L Pct. Assistant Coach Chris Mudge Chris Mudge joined head coach Jason Hooten s men s basketball coaching staff on June 1, 2010, and has helped direct the Bearkats to a 98-69 record during the past five seasons.that mark includes back-to-back 20- plus win seasons the past two years. Sam Houston s 50 victories are the most for the program in a two-year span since the 1972 and 1973 squads first accomplished the feat. Mudge helped direct Sam Houston to its third and fourth post-season national tournament appearance as an NCAA Division I competitor. After back-to-back appearances in the Southland Conference tournament finals in Katy, the Kats have earned berths in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. Their victories over Alabama State and UNC-Wilmington in the CIT first rounds are the Bearkats first two NCAA post-season wins. Assistant Coach Matt Braeuer During Matt Braeuer s first two seasons as an assistant on head coach Jason Hooten s men s basketball staff, Sam Houston made its third and fourth postseason national tournament appearance as an NCAA Division I competitor. With a 24-11 record in 2014 and a 26-9 mark in 2015, the Kats have put together 50 victories in consecutive seasons. Only once before in Sam Houston history (in 1972 and 1973) have Bearkat squads equaled that twoyear mark. Each of Braeuer s two seasons, Sam Houston has reached the finals of the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy and followed up with a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The victories over Alabama State and UNC-Wilmington in the Kats two CIT first round appearances are the Bearkats first NCAA post-season wins. Before coming to SHSU, Braeuer worked two seasons as the video coordinator for men s basketball at the University of Maryland. He also coached at Midland College and was a graduate assistant and three-year starter at Wichita State. At Maryland, Braeuer was responsible for assisting with scouting, game preparation and video analysis of Maryland practices and games. He arrived at Maryland after spending one season as an assistant coach at Midland. The Chaparrals went 33-4 and reached the NJCAA Division I national championship game that year. Braeuer spent two seasons as a graduate assistant on the staff of Gregg Marshall at Wichita State. There he worked on film exchange, practice scheduling, community service events and was the director of Shocker Basketball Camps. Matt knows what it takes to succeed at the NCAA Division I level, Hooten said. He played on teams that reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and the NIT finals. He has coached in the ACC the last two years. Matt is a good teacher and will help us become better on the court. Braeuer ( BREYE-ur ) played for his father, Ed, at Belton High School, where he started at point guard for three seasons. As a senior, he was a Texas Class 5A first team All-State selection, as well as a first team all-region pick. He was also named MVP of District 13-5A. He was recruited by head coach Mark Turgeon to Wichita State and played for him for three seasons before Turgeon left to coach Texas A&M. Braeuer started for three seasons at point for the Shockers, where he helped WSU return to the NCAA Tournament, play in the Sweet Sixteen and earn a Top-10 national ranking. Braeuer is in Wichita State s career top 10s in 3-pointers and games played and stands 11th in career assists and steals for the Shockers Sam Houston Men s Basketball www.gobearkats.com

Assistant Coach Omar Lowery In his first season as an assistant on head coach Jason Hooten s staff, Omar Lowery helped lead Sam Houston to not only its second consecutive 20-win season, but also the Southland Conference tournament finals and a berth in the CollegeInsider.com tournament in 2014-15. Omar Lowery joined the staff in October, 2014. Previously Lowery served last season as an assistant at San Jose State after spending four years as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Cal Poly and three seasons at Texas State. The 26-9 season for the Bearkats in 2014-15 gave Sam Houston a total of 50 victories in the past two seasons - the most in a two-year span in SHSU basketball history. Only the 1972 and 1973 teams equaled the 50-victory record. At both San Jose State and Cal Poly, Lowery focused on out of state recruiting in the Midwest and Texas while also involved in recruiting the state of California. He was also in charge of skill development for the post players. Cal Poly basketball saw a new level of success while Lowery was there, setting a program record for Big West victories at 12 and set a school season record for home wins. The team posted the program s first win over a ranked opponent with a 70-68 victory at No. 11 UCLA. Lowery also helped in the skill development of the post player at Cal Poly including Chris Eversley who was a 2012-13 All-Big West first team honoree. He tutored Brian Bennett who was 63rd among Division I players in field goal percentage at 52.4 (133-254) and Malik Love, Jr., who was the 2010-11 Big West Co-Freshman of the Year. Prior his arrival at Cal Poly, Lowery spent three seasons at Texas State (2006-09) where he helped recruit seven players ranked among the top-40 Texas high school prospects. With those players, Texas State increased its win totals each of three seasons Lowery was on the bench. Lowery was instrumental in the academic success of the program in San Marcos. He helped mentor 2009 Capital One/Southland Conference all-academic selections John Rybak and Ryan White. As a graduate assistant at Eastern New Mexico University (2004-06), Lowery recruited and coached 2005 Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year Josh Jackson and 2006 All-Lone Star second team selection Justin Redman-Trotter. Lowery also served as a member of the physical education department. As a collegiate player, Lowery competed for two seasons at South Plains College before transferring to Concordia University where he earned All-Lakeshore Conference first team honors. Concordia qualified for the 2000 NCAA Division III Tournament, the first time in school history. A Wisconsin native, Lowery graduated from Concordia (Wisc.) in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education. He received his master s degree in sports administration from Eastern New Mexico in 2006. Lowery has a son, Miles. Sam Houston Men s Basketball www.gobearkats.com
