The Diamond Ranch 1882 Established N ever before offered for sale, since the 1880 s, The Diamond Ranch has been owned by five generations of the same family. This is the opportunity of a lifetime to own one of Eastern Montana s reputation grass ranches. Roger Jacobs (406) 698-7686 Bryan Anderson (406) 839-7439 Patrick K. Goggins Broker/Owner Office (406) 259-2544 Fax (406) 259-2510 ranches@pipmontana.com www.pipmontana.com

History The Historic Diamond Ranch was established in 1882, just six years after General George A. Custer passed through this area as he marched his troops up Rosebud Creek on their way to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Not long thereafter, Freeman Philbrick, the first of five generations to own The Diamond Ranch came to Montana Territory s Rosebud Valley and homesteaded along Rosebud Creek. This was the beginning of Philbrick Land & Livestock Corporation, which at one time grew into a 125 section ranching operation. To this day it is known as the Diamond Ranch and is under ownership of the fourth and fifth generations of the same family. Location The Diamond Ranch is located in the Rosebud Valley about 20 miles south of Rosebud, Montana, a small community on the banks of the Yellowstone River, and about 28 miles southeast of Forsyth, Montana, which is the county seat and a major trade center for this area. The ranch is in the Colstrip school district. Colstrip is a bustling community supported by local ranches, coal mining and electricity production, and lies about 15 miles to the west of the ranch headquarters. Major airports with commercial air service are located in Miles City & Billings, a one hour and two hour drive respectfully from the ranch.

T General Operation he Diamond Ranch has for many years been operated as a cow/calf and yearling operation, typically running 275 yearlings and 500 cows. In 2012, the ranch summered 450 cow/calf pairs and 400 yearlings. The hay meadows along Rosebud Creek total approximately 672 acres, with 82 acres machine leveled and irrigated. They supply the ranch s hay needs and on exceptional years have been known to produce enough hay to last three years. The ranch has a good set of support facilities: these include a ranch home, large shop, grain bin, two barns, a large multi-pen corral and alley system, and three pipelines to pastures with lengths of approximately 9 miles, 7 miles and 5.5 miles.

T The Land he Diamond Ranch is a classic Eastern Montana Ranch. It has four miles of Rosebud Creek flowing through its center. Hay meadows irrigated by the ranch s senior water rights, line the creek bottom and produce the ranch s winter feed. The creek bottom gives way to rolling hills covered with native prairie grasses, timbered ridges and sandstone outcroppings, where the current owners have found historic carvings. Elevations on the ranch range from 2850 feet on Rosebud Creek to 3275 feet at its highest. Snider Creek, Pony Creek and Sand Coulee are major drainages within the ranch collecting runoff that flows into Rosebud Creek.

Stewardship The present day owners of The Diamond Ranch are very respectful of the legacy and history the ranch possesses. They have been great caretakers of the land and its resources by keeping stocking rates in line and developing water resources to better utilize and distribute grazing. Third generation owners, Russell and Genie May Garfield were charter members of the Northern Plains Resource Council. Genie May Garfield was also the president of the Rosebud Protective Association. Both Russell and Genie May Garfield instilled the importance of ranch management and stewardship to their family.

T Wildlife his area of Eastern Montana is well known for its healthy and diverse wildlife populations, especially its trophy mule deer. Other big game species include whitetail deer, pronghorn antelope, mountain lion and the occasional elk. The riparian area along Rosebud Creek has excellent ringneck pheasant habitat and the ranch supports good populations of Hungarian partridge and sharptail grouse, as well as a wide array of non-game wildlife species.
