Number Sense Performance Task: Par The Mini-Golf Way! LEVEL 3 Anchor Knowledge and Understanding demonstrates a considerable understanding of how to represent the score compared to par for each round using positive and negative integers demonstrates a considerable understanding of calculating final scores using integer representation of the round scores compared to par with a minor error Thinking demonstrates a considerable understanding of the problem demonstrates a considerable understanding of integers in a real-life context when deciding the order of finish in the tournament uses appropriate strategies to determine the number of players required to pay for the initial costs, although only the additional customers required to achieve the profit is shown Communication communicates with considerable effectiveness; provides solutions that reveal considerable clarity of thought provides clear solutions along with concluding statements Application demonstrates considerable skill involving average although the averages are interchanged with Sarah s average identified as Damian s and Damian s as Sarah s demonstrates considerable ability to apply the skills of percent when determining what percent of players finished the tournament below par NEL Ontario Numeracy Assessment 1
ONAP NS C 1.1 Name: Date: Performance Task: Par The Mini-Golf Way! Glenfields Secondary School has just built an 18-hole mini-golf course. Students will operate the course. Profits will go to charity and to the school community. The students at Glenfields Secondary School celebrated the opening of their new mini-golf course by holding a tournament. The tournament had 4 rounds. In golf, par has a special meaning. If an 18-hole mini-golf course is a par 52, this means an exceptional golfer might complete all 18 holes with 52 strokes. Most golfers take more strokes than par. Some golfers take fewer strokes than par. A round of 0 means the golfer took exactly 52 strokes to complete one round of this course. A round of 57 is 5 strokes above par. The score for this round is +5. A round of 50 is 2 strokes below par. The score for this round is 2. A lower score means a better result. In a tournament, scores from the rounds are added together. If a player has rounds of 53, 55, 56, and 50, the total number of strokes for all 4 rounds is the sum of 53, 55, 56, and 50 which is 214. The scores compared to par for the 4 rounds are +1, +3, +4, and 2. The total score for the tournament is the sum of +1, +3, +4, and 2 which is +6. Par for 4 rounds is 4 times par, or 4 52 = 208. So a score of +6 compared to par means that the total number of strokes was 6 more than the par score for 4 rounds. The score compared to par for the 4 rounds is 208 + 6 which is 214. The following table shows the total number of strokes taken by the 6 players in each round. Par for each round is 52 strokes. The player with the lowest score wins the tournament.
