~~~~Bluewater Bulletin~~~~ www.sandiegorodandreel.com June, 2016 San Diego Rod and Reel Club (760) 533-6920 Club Meeting June 2 nd at the Red Sails Inn 2614 Shelter Island Dr Happy Hour at 6:00 Meeting at 7:00 Call Silver Gate Yacht Club at 619-222-1214. This month s meeting is at the Red Sails Inn located at 2614 Shelter Island Dr. Please dress accordingly as it will be outside. Our guest speaker will be Lyle from NOAA Fisheries. Lyle always gives a great presentation, so I am sorry I will miss it. Picture of the Month Hello FCM s President Tom Gruber Here we are at the end of May and the first Albacore has been caught out at the corner. A 20# fish at that! I will take that all day long. Some nice Bluefin in the 50-60# class as well are out there, a spotty one day bite then not seen for 4 or 5 days. Lindo Lakes Catfish Derby is June 4 th with the Lakeside Optimist Club. This is a real fun event. We will be cooking and serving hotdogs and chili for all the kids and parents. I cannot make it this year due to another commitment at Rancho Leonero. Norm and Rolly will be hosting this event. So please sign up to help. It is always a good time with Fellow Club Members. Our Lou Duchene Memorial Big Fish Tournament is rapidly approaching. If you are not fishing the tournament, we can use the help with the Weigh in, Captain s Meeting and the Awards Banquet set up and clean up. The Saturday of the tournament is the same day as the Chula Vista Harborfest (August 20 th ). Bill and Deb Renwick were more than gracious to step up and volunteer to run the booth on behalf of the club. They DEFINITELY need help, so if you are available, please let Bill or Tim Foote know you can help out. I am sure Ellie and Rolly will have a fantastic raffle for the Big Fish, so make sure to buy those raffle tickets. If you have any concerns, questions or need help with anything, please call Norm Campbell at 619-988-5186, I will not be available until the 12 th of June. This is a picture of Norm who Yesterday I had a legal Barracuda that I released, then lost a monster Yellow at gaff. I caught 2 Barry's on that leader and it was so ruff I didn't re-tie. Dooooh!. Lesson learned?! VP Norm Campbell There is still time if anyone would like to sign up for the Silver Gate Yacht Club Wheel Chair Regatta. June 11 th and 12 th. Hope to see you on the water, Tight lines, Tom 760-533-6920 Tomg4fishin@cox.net Hello FCMS, Here we are in May with the Yellowtail tournaments in full swing. Let me tell you, the 1
Yellows have been a little harder to catch this year off La Jolla. The problem seems to be that they are very well fed with red crab and there are so many folks fishing for them. I have seen them on many occasions on the surface boils under birds and you cannot get within a couple hundred yards as they just go dive down. Throwing irons on them in the area of where they were produces Barracuda. Most of the Barracuda are not legal, but some are of good size. I'll tell you, my arm is getting very sore from all the casting without the proper results of the monster Yellow that everyone is looking for. I am going to keep fishing for "Old Yeller" as I am sure old age and treachery has got to pay off soon. So, on the other notable catches is the first Albacore of the season has been landed. Let's hope this is the start of some "Chicken of the Sea" catching. The fish was caught at the "corners" and the school was large, but would not bite. Also, there is a report of Bluefin schools "miles wide" working up the line by the "371". The Yellowfin are also just south of the corners by the "302". If you re thinking it is time to spool up with new line and dust off the rods, the answer is Yes! Go do some yard work to get some plus points on the wife's ledger board, and then get out there to do what we all enjoy! It's time to do some "Catching". Get out and put a bend in that rod! Norm Weigh Master Curt Itogawa The month long May Yellowtail tournament is rolling along. So far anglers have been catching Blue Fin tuna, Halibut, barracudas and some Yellowtails. Currently Ed Howerton is in the lead with 25 plus pound Yellowtail. With the weather coming down, there is an opportunity to catch a bigger yellow before the end of the tournament. So, until the next weigh-in, stay safe and have fun. Curtis Itogawa Support Our home during & outside of our meetings. Bali Hai Restaurant 2230 Shelter Island Dr San Diego, CA 92106 Raffle Master Ellie Duchene Hello FCM'S, Heard your May raffle was great thanks to Rolly buying quality items and Sue, Gary, Gabe, Norm and Rolly helping at the raffle table during my absence. A big thank you to all for continuing to support the club by making our club raffles a success. Sharon and my Scandinavian cruise were fabulous! I would highly recommend anyone that hasn't been on Celebrity Cruise Lines, or seen Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Holland, to go. Absolutely beautiful countries, very clean and friendly. We were very lucky to be in Amsterdam when the flowers were gorgeous never seen tulips as big and colorful. I am happy to be home and ready to see all my club friends at the June meeting. Rolly will be buying for the June raffle, so please come and take advantage of his bargains. Till then, Roll The Barrel!! Ellie 2
This year our Big Fish tournament will held on Sat. the 20 th and Sun. the 21 st of August, with the banquet also on the 21 st. The seminar for the tournament will be held on Aug. 4 th (our normal meeting night at the Bali Hai restaurant). With the El Nino here, this should be the best time to be out on the water. So mark the dates down and get your gear ready. The board is working hard to make this year the best tournament to date. So stay tuned, there will be more to follow. Dennis Editor Gary Mouritzen GarysHomeLoans@hotmail.com 619-571-8787 Hello FCM's, Pictures, pictures, pictures. I need pictures and stories for the bulletin; otherwise, we get Homer Simpson pictures in our newsletter! Even if you plan to release your fish, practice CPR Catch, Photograph and Release! Then email me to the address above with your picture and story. If you want to add a Weight Receipt form, CC Curt Itogawa on the email. His email is blogawa1@sbcglobal.net Speaking of Curt, please offer your condolences to him. His sister just passed away after battling cancer. If you have ever experienced death of a family member, it s not an easy experience. Curt, my heart breaks for your loss and please know we are here for you. Gary 3
