MOMO Therapy bike select the therapy bike for more balance The MOMO is a therapy bike which supports in particular the balance training and mobilisation of children and teenagers. The suspension force of the stabilizers is easy to adjust and can be adapted to a child s capabilities. The stabilizers can be fixed rigidly to mediate security and to build confidence. During the therapy, they can be adjusted to become very gentle suspension stabilizers. The dynamic stabilizers also ensure traction in any riding situation, and balanced travel on bends. The diverse range of MOMO series accessories is also compatible with the therapy bike. This permits the provision of customer tailored equipment. The frame geometry with the low access point and centre of gravity simplifies handling. The diversity of drives and equipment permits individual adaptations. The particularly low-set stabilizers permit both dynamic support and rigid adjustment. MOMO electric drives Mobility through support 14 www.schuchmann-reha.com/momo

MOMO electric drive mobility through support Motorised assistance when using a therapy bike makes sense for many users and is sometimes necessary due to the indication. The start-up situation is often the only obstacle for many users for independent use of the bicycle. However, permanent support to compensate for the relative loss of power in the muscles is required for conditions such as muscular dystrophy. We have developed an innovative electric drive to make the medical benefits of cycling accessible to these people. Based on the hardware from the Canadian manufacturer of e-bikes, BionX, we have developed customised setups especially for the requirements described above. All bikes are equipped with a 250 Watt strong, brushless hub front motor, a 6.6 Ah strong lithium-ion battery and a digital display. The display can be optionally mounted for the rider or the accompanying escort. The level of assistance can be adjusted to four levels in all setups. The assistance results from the pedal pressure and a factor of approx. 1.4 to 3 times depending on the level. A selection can be made between the following setups: Start-up assistance With this setup the rider experiences direct assistance from the motor up to 3 km/h, which then becomes ride assistance up to 6 km/h, when applying light pressure to the pedal and minimum start-up. Start-up assistance Plus With this setup the rider experiences direct assistance from the motor up to 4/6 km/h for 16 + 20 and up to 6 km/h for 24 + 26, which then becomes ride assistance up to 10 km/h, when applying light pressure to the pedal and minimum start-up. Mobile With this setup the rider experiences direct assistance from the motor up to 4/6 km/h for 16 + 20 and up to 10 km/h for 24 + 26, which then becomes ride assistance up to 10/12.5 km/h with 16 + 20 and up to 17.5 km/h with 24 + 26, when applying light pressure to the pedal and minimum start-up. Higher speeds are only possible with muscle power in all of the different setups. Our electric drive variations are available for the MOMO therapy bike and tricycles in sizes 16-26 The drive can be controlled via a display - this is optionally mounted on the handlebars or on the luggage rack. Analysis cable for software maintenance The drive performance support is controlled digitally and is available in three different setups MOMO electric drives 15

What effect does riding a bicycle have on children with a spastic disability? Within the scope of a diploma thesis, the effects of regular training with a MOMO tricycle on children with a spastic disability of the lower extremities was ascertained using pedobarography. The following extract clearly shows how positive integrating cycling into a therapy plan or daily schedule can be. The fundamental question for my diploma thesis was which effects regular riding on the Momo tricycle can have on the lower extremities of children with spastic disabilities. The intention was to investigate whether training for four weeks had positive results on muscle tone control, contracture status and the cognitive capabilities of children. To do this the pressure on the pedals, the impulse and, in an individual case study, the knee angle on contracted knees were determined as measuring points and units. 24 children with an ICP syndrome between the ages of 5 and 13 years participated in the study. The Momo tricycle has been developed by Schuchmann especially for children with a restricted sense of balance and limited movement processes, and provides in addition to the special frame with an extra-low access point diverse, accessory options in order to allow integration of tricycling into the therapy plan and to allow the children to experience mobility. The results from the children were, in part, extremely impressive. One example of this is a little girl with severe ICP syndrome, who was able to stand with assistance but not to walk, and who was unable to place any pressure and only a very low impulse on the pedal surfaces during the initial measurement appointment, meaning that she could not ride without assistance from a push bar. After 2 weeks, she had developed a method of riding which allowed independent pedalling. After 4 weeks she had managed to teach herself to pedal; was able to ride the tricycle herself and could control it, including steering and braking. The pressure curve for this little girl is shown as an example. The pressure is represented in Newtons per cm2 on the Y axis, and the time measured in seconds on the X axis. The left leg (Fig. 1) shows, as has already been described, hardly any pressure during the initial measurement (blue line); the second measurement after 14 days indicates somewhat more pressure, but above all an undulating pressure. The last measurement (green line) on the other hand shows a clear increase in the pressure conditions on the pedals, which permits independent riding. The right leg, too (Fig. 2) shows in the first two measurements only differences in the regularity of the pressure, whereas the last measurement shows a clear increase in pressure, and pedalling movements are recognisable within the curves. 18 www.schuchmann-reha.com

The results can be summarized as follows: The integration of tricycling into the therapy plan or daily schedule had a positive effect on the pressure and impulse shown by test children. The impulse increased with almost all test children who trained for 4 weeks. The total pressure, too, rose in comparison to the start of the measurements. Consequently, the muscle tone was controlled in a targeted manner for the necessary pedalling movements. The knee contracture monitored within the scope of the investigation, which lay at 98 or109, could be loosened up after training to 171 or 179. In addition to the clearly measurable parameters, the non-measurable parameters should not be neglected. It could be observed that the test children who had prosodic and linguistic problems articulated far better during training and measurements. They asked questions; talked about what they had done at the weekend and wanted to be entertained. Through motor activity and the sensory processing closely connected to this activity, basic connections for permanent learning effects between nerve cells are formed, maintained and strengthened in the brain. Learning targeted and well-controlled movements, deposits important structures in the form of data highways in the brain. (Arnold, 2009) In this way, information learned in schools or in breaks or in leisure time would be better stored Pressure [N/cm²] 40 35 30 25 20 15 10 5 0 Pressure progression le 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 18 20 Time [sec.] 1. 2. 3. Measurement Measurement Measurement Fig. 1 Fig. 2 and more quickly called up through regular movement. For children who sit in wheelchairs, the tricycle provides a good way of doing sports, and at the same time of expanding their own environment. Children with particularly weak postures, too, can be supported and fixed sufficiently. If school children are unable to pedal independently, one possibility could be for them to be pushed by other school children, allowing them to experience passive movement. Thus weaker children, too, would have the chance of enjoying movement and fun in their breaktimes, at the same time storing what has been learned and promoting the formation of nerve cells. Regular cycling therefore has positive and rapid effects also on children with, in part, extremely severe disabilities. The coordination of the legs is promoted; dropped feet can be relaxed through higher impulses and a larger sensorimotor surface can be worked with. Furthermore, the extremities are strengthened, the development of a child s own environment is promoted and contact with healthy children is made easier.
