Ross sees first game action since opener Right-hander lasts just two-thirds of an inning in rehab outing By Chad Thornburg / MLB.com Padres right-hander Tyson Ross saw his first game action since the Padres' season opener on April 4, but his Minor League rehab appearance was short-lived. Pitching for Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore on Thursday, Ross lasted just two-thirds of an inning against Rancho Cucamonga, allowing four earned runs on three hits and a pair of walks. He threw 27 pitches. Ross landed on the disabled list with a bout of inflammation in his shoulder after his Opening Day start, and his recovery was further delayed when he rolled his ankle in his hotel room last month. Ross drew praise after a pair of batting practices last week, but with the Padres out of contention, there's no urgency to rush him back. Instead the focus is on building his confidence heading into the offseason. "It's all going to be predicated on how he feels coming off of every start," manager Andy Green said on Tuesday of Ross' return. "We're not going to push him quickly, obviously, at this point in time. It's [almost] September; we're going to make sure he's healthy. My hope is that he's starting for us in mid-toearly September." Ross, an All-Star in 2014, is hoping to resume his seventh year in the Majors and his fourth with San Diego. He has a 3.64 ERA through 153 big league games (102 starts). 2

Petco Park will host 2017 World Baseball Classic games San Diego, Miami and Guadalajara, Mexico, announced as other North American sites By David Adler / MLB.com The North American venues for the 2017 World Baseball Classic were announced on Thursday, with host cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, Miami and Guadalajara, Mexico. Dodger Stadium will host the WBC semifinals and final, which will take place on March 20-22, 2017. It will be the second time the Dodgers' ballpark plays host to the tournament's final rounds, the first having been in 2009. "Dodger Stadium and our great fans look forward to the finest players in the world competing for the WBC championship," Dodgers president and MLB International Committee chairman Stan Kasten said. The Padres' Petco Park will host second-round games from March 14-19. First-round games will take place at Marlins Park in Miami and Estadio Charros de Jalisco in Guadalajara -- a first-time host -- from March 9-13. "We are proud of welcoming the World Baseball Classic to Jalisco," said Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval. "We are certain that, thanks to the quality of our infrastructure and the warmth of our people, Jalisco will be known as the baseball capital of Latin America." Pool C -- which includes the defending WBC champion Dominican Republic, the United States, Canada and Colombia -- will play its first-round games in Miami. Guadalajara will host Pool D, made up of Mexico, Italy, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Mexico has hosted World Baseball Classic games once before, in 2009, when first-round games were played in Mexico City's Foro Sol. Miami has been a host city twice, in '09 and '13, as has San Diego. Petco Park hosted the inaugural World Baseball Classic's semifinals and final in '06, as well as second-round games in '09. "The World Baseball Classic highlights the diversity and global appeal of our game, and it's an honor for the San Diego/Tijuana region to once again host the second round," Padres president Mike Dee said. 3

In addition to the North American sites, the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea, and the Tokyo Dome in Japan had previously been announced as host stadiums for WBC pool play and second-round games. The WBC's first- and second-round format will be round-robin pool play, with each team playing the others in their pool once. The top two teams in each of the four first-round pools will advance to the second round. To purchase tickets through an exclusive WBC presale, fans can In the United States, tournament games will air live exclusively on MLB Network (English) and ESPN Deportes (Spanish). Internationally, leading global media rights agency MP & Silva has teamed with WBCI to distribute the tournament across all forms of television, internet, mobile and radio in all territories excluding the U.S., Puerto Rico and Japan. 4

Tyson Ross rusty in first rehab start Padres' Opening Day starter allows four runs, doesn't get out of first inning By Jeff Sanders 9:47 p.m. Aug. 25, 2016 RANCHO CUCAMONGA Tyson Ross inched closer to resuming his season on Thursday night. With 142 days peeling off the calendar since his Opening Day assignment, the rust will clearly take more than one minor league rehab start to knock off. Pitching is not like riding a bicycle, the 29-year-old right-hander said after yielding four runs in 2/3 of an inning for high Single-A Lake Elsinore The Epicenter. You either execute or you don t. It s black or white. It s binary code. I had a lot of non-executed pitches today. They all came inside the first inning. Scheduled to throw 45 pitches with General Manager A.J. Preller in attendance, Ross managed just 28 (15 strikes) in the game after walking two batters, surrendering three hits and uncorking two wild pitches. He sat 93-94 mph and flashed a decent slider in fanning one batter, but was pulled with two outs in a laborious first inning. The Storm s didn t do Ross many favors. After Erick Mejia singled sharply on the third pitch of the game, Andre Ethier pounded a ball up the middle for what looked like a tailor-made double play. Some fortune was even on Ross side, as Storm shortstop Ruddy Giron was standing at second base to cover Mejia s attempted steal only to have the ball bounced off his mouth as the runner was sliding into second base. Both runners were save. After an injury delay (Giron initially stayed in the game), Ross walked the next batter, had a run-scoring grounder sneak by a diving Ty France at third base and walked another batter with one out to load the bases. 8

Two runs scored on wild pitches before Noah Perio s sacrifice fly to center ended Ross afternoon on the mound. The results are what they are, Ross said after throwing in the bullpen to continue to build his stamina. I got three up-and-downs out here (two in the bullpen). I got to extend my pitch count a little bit. For the most part, I kept the ball on the ground, which is what I m trying to do as a pitcher. I ve got some things to work on in between, but this was another step in the right direction. It s been a long trying year. I ve been grinding through it. You ve got to find small victories and just continue to take steps forward. Thursday s outing was Ross first game action since Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning on April 4, an Opening Day assignment in which he yielded eight runs seven earned on nine hits, two hit batters and a walk. Ross felt a twinge in his shoulder in his ensuing bullpen and landed on the disabled list with inflammation. He was on his way back from the injury in early July when he sprained his left ankle while doing exercises in his hotel room, further delaying Ross comeback. His landing foot finally sturdy, Ross threw two live batting practices leading up to his first appearance in the California League since pitching a game for Stockton in 2011. This was huge for me, just getting under the lights and back in a game setting, Ross said. It s been a long time. I ve watched a lot of baseball. It s not as much fun watching as it is playing. It s a matter of being patient and just trying to focus on what I m doing and doing things the right way. Ross will likely pitch in at least one more game with the Storm likely Tuesday in Lake Elsinore before folding back into the Padres rotation in September when rosters expand, though likely in three-, four- and five-inning spurts. He s expected to make between three and four starts down the stretch to prove to himself, the organization and potential trade suitors that both his shoulder and ankle are sound heading into the offseason. 9

In a lost season for both Ross and the rebuilding Padres, that will at least count for something. They were looking for me to be big piece this year, Ross said. Being the opening day starter and being hurt all season hasn t helped the team out much. To see all the changes that have been made, it s been tough to watch, but we ve got some good young talent and the future s bright for the Padres. But it s been hard to be on the sidelines the whole time. 10

Minors: Asuaje sends El Paso win in extras Recapping yesterday's action for the Padres' minor league affiliates By Jeff Sanders 11:54 a.m. Aug. 25, 2016 Updated, 12:05 p.m. Carlos Asuaje s 12th-inning single untied the game and Hunter Renfroe s ensuing double provided insurance in Triple-A El Paso s 4-2 win over Albuquerque on Wednesday in the Pacific Coast League. With the win, the Chihuahuas (69-62) magic number dropped to eight. Both Asjuaje (.323) and Renfroe (.309) each finished with two hits. Right-hander Bryan Rodriguez (5.03) allowed a run in six innings in a no-decision before El Paso s bullpen combined for one run over the final six innings. DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (53-75) Missions 4, Frisco 3 (10): DH Ryan Miller (.228) went 2-for-4 with a double and a game-winning single in extra innings and 1B Trae Santos (.184) went 3-for-4, including two doubles, his second homer and three RBIs. RHP Seth Simmons (1.94) struck out five and allowed a run on three hits and two walks in a no-decision. RHP Gerardo Reyes (0-3, 5.91) allowed three runs in an inning. RF Franmil Reyes (.269) went 3-for-4 with a double and 2B Luis Urias (.323) and 3B Ty France (.321) each drove in a run. LOW SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (58-71) TinCaps 2, Great Lakes 1: RHP Austin Smith (4-6, 4.78) struck out five over four scoreless innings after LHP Logan Allen (3.02) allowed a run in 3 2/3 innings in the start. 3B Carlos Belen (.228) went 2-for-4 with his 11th homer. SHORT-SEASON TRI-CITY (29-36) Salem-Keizer 5, Dust Devils 4: LHP Elier Sanchez (0-1, 7.94) allowed five runs in 5 2/3 innings in his first start since a demotion from the Cal League. CF Buddy Reed (.244) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and his 14th steal and C Wilfri De La Cruz (.314) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. 11

ROOKIE DSL PADRES (36-33) Orioles 9, Padres 6: LHP Jose Cabrera (2.79) walked six but allowed one hit and two runs in 3 2/3 innings before RHP Luis Martinez (3-2, 12.05) allowed four runs in 2/3 of an inning in the loss. World Baseball Classic returning to Petco Park Padres' downtown home will host second-round games in March 2017 By Jeff Sanders 11:17 a.m. Aug. 25, 2016 Updated, 11:36 a.m. The World Baseball Classic is returning to Petco Park this spring. Eight months after hosting Major League Baseball s All-Star Game, the Padres downtown venue will host second-round games from March 14-18 next year, the third time that Petco Park has hosted the International Baseball Federation s tournament games. Petco Park hosted the semifinals and finals of the inaugural event in 2006, as well as second-round games in 2009. We are thrilled to welcome yet another Major League Baseball jewel event to Petco Park in 2017, Padres President Mike Dee said in a release. The World Baseball Classic highlights the diversity and global appeal of our game, and it s an honor for the San Diego/Tijuana region to once again host the second round. Dodger Stadium will host this year s semifinals and finals from March 20-22. Marlins Park will host first-round games from March 9-12 for Pool C, which includes defending championship Dominican Republic, the United States, Canada and Colombia. Other first-round sites include Estadio Charros de Jalisco in Guadalajara, Mexico (Pool D), Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul, South Korea (Pool B) and Tokyo Dome in Japan (Pool A and Pool E second round). The first- and second-rounds will be round-robin pool play. The top two teams in each of the first-round pools will advance to the second round. U.S. tournament games will air on MLB Network. 13

World Baseball Classic to be played at Petco Park POSTED 11:28 AM, AUGUST 25, 2016, BY CITY NEWS SERVICE SAN DIEGO San Diego will serve as a host city for the World Baseball Classic next year, and the finals will be in Los Angeles, Major League Baseball announced Thursday. Second round games will take place at Petco Park March 14-19. The World Baseball Classic highlights the diversity and global appeal of our game, and it s an honor for the San Diego/Tijuana region to once again host the second round, Padres president Mike Dee said. The championship rounds of the inaugural tournament in 2006 were held at Petco Park, as was the second round of the 2009 event. The semifinals and finals will be at Dodger Stadium on March 20-22. It will be the second time the facility has hosted the concluding games. The WBC s first- and second-round format will be round-robin pool play, with each team playing the others in their pool once. The top two teams in each of the four first-round pools will advance to the second round. The U.S. will be in Pool C at Marlins Park in Miami along with the defending champion Dominican Republic, Canada and Colombia. Other host cities for early round games are Miami; Guadalajara, Mexico; Seoul, South Korea; and Tokyo, Japan. 14

Dodger Stadium, Petco Park to host 2017 World Baseball Classic games NEW YORK (AP) -- Dodger Stadium will host the championship game of the 2017 World Baseball Classic, with Marlins Park and Petco Park also holding games leading up to final on March 22. Tokyo, South Korea, Miami and Guadalajara, Mexico will host first-round games in March. Tokyo and San Diego will hold the second-round games.
