GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 1 Guidelines for coaches This outlines what the club s expectations are for all volunteer coaches and also what the club will provide for each coach. The club will outline the length and nature of the appointment so both the club and coach are clear about what is expected. The club will record any entitlements provided to the coach during the appointment in the agreement. This will include reimbursement of expenses, supply of clothing or an honorarium. The agreement will outline when any entitlement shall be provided as well as any conditions involved. As Club personnel can change frequently, a written letter provides stability for both the coach and the club regarding roles and responsibilities. All roles and responsibilities of each coach will be clearly stated in the written letter with attached duty description. eg: who does the coach report to (the club committee, President, Secretary) Outlined will be what team/s they will be responsible for. Level of authority, what decisions they make and which decisions must be ratified by the club. The letter will refer to SADNA By-laws, Club and coaches behavior policies and procedures that the coach is expected to abide by during their appointment. Length of appointment including any specific team, if there will be opportunity for the club to review the coaches performance and provides the club the opportunity to move coaches around to different teams. 1

Your duties and responsibilities may be varied to allow Gemini Netball Club Inc to respond to changes to its requirements provided that any changes are consistent with your skills, qualifications, training and experience. You are required at all times to perform your duties and responsibilities in the best interests of Gemini Netball Club Inc and act in compliance with the directions of management. Acceptance of the appointment will be regarded as your agreement to the coaches position with Gemini Netball Club Inc. Remuneration You will be paid up to the sum of $50 for coaching the team during the insert season date The sum may be deducted from the fees of your child playing within the club or will be paid to you by cheque or eft at the end of the season. Equipment The club will provide you with the following equipment, which will remain the property of the club at all times and is to be returned to the club when you are no longer coaching for the club. You will ensure that you have read and become familiar with these rules, by-laws, procedures and practices. Compliance with these guidelines, by-laws, procedures and practices is a condition of coaching. If you have any questions in relation to your coaching position please do not hesitate to telephone Club President on 0414 641 063. Coaches Name Date GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 2 Player court time Where possible all players receive equal court time during minor round. Refer to policy B1 Coaches code of Behavior that states adhere to the clubs policy regarding equal court time during minor round games. Major round games will be at the discretion of the coach and court time maybe reduced for non attendance without notification at training. It is strongly recommended that all coaches keep a record of player s court time during the season. 5

Attendance at training is compulsory. If a player does not attend training and no notice is given and no prior arrangements were agreed upon, the coach should investigate the reason why. As a general rule, regular non attendance at training will result in less court time; however the President must be consulted before making a decision. In the sub-primary competition, all players are required to experience all positions. This competition is a learning competition and premiership points are not allocated. All players in your team must play equally across all playing positions. During the major round games, all players must participate in each game played. The court time allocated is at the coach s discretion. eg: they may play only one (1) quarter of each game during the finals series. Players and or parents will be informed personally of court time changes. GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC 6

POLICY # 3 Training for all Gemini Netball teams is considered compulsory All court training will be conducted at the S A Districts Netball Association courts at Atlantis Drive Golden Grove Gemini Netball Club has the courts booked from 5.30pm 8pm Prior to the start of each season you will be asked what your time preference re- training are and the club will make every effort to accommodate your first preference. Time slots and court numbers will be allocated to each team and due to team numbers the early time slots may be allocated a half court. Training for the entire club takes place on Thursday nights, generally on courts insert court #s Recommended training times: Sub Primary 45 mins Primary & Sub Juniors - 60 mins Junior - 60 mins Inters - 60 mins Seniors 60 mins 75 mins Umpires are encouraged to attend training night to assist teams. If you specifically require an umpire to be in attendance, please liaise with the Umpire s Coordinator, who will make the necessary arrangements. If a player within your team does not attend training without giving prior notice, you should immediately investigate the reason why and if necessary take some disciplinary action. 7

Generally speaking, repeated non attendance at training will result in less court time. Before taking such action, please liaise with the President. There maybe some extenuating circumstances which prevent a player form attending training. The player or her parents must forward a letter to the committee explaining their situation and asking for an exemption from training. The committee will look at each case individually and send a letter of reply. The arranging of match practice between club teams is the responsibility of the coach of each team. Coaches are very cooperative, particularly within a specific age grouping GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 3 Insert Date All teams need practice games, practice umpires, extra court space. If you are an experienced coach or umpire please offer your services. Training sessions should be well planned. Activities should include: Review of the last game Warm ups and stretches General fitness activities 8

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 4 Trophies The club allocates two individual trophies to all teams for each season. The names of these trophies are at the discretion of the coaches. One (1) will be the Best and Fairest - other examples: Most consistent Most determined Encouragement award Coaches award It is the responsibility of the coach to decide upon the method of determining the trophy winners, but is typically by some sort of point system, recorded on a weekly basis. If you are coaching your own child s team please decide on a voting method, which does not include you voting yourself. This way there cannot be any comments made from other parents about the fairness of the system if your own child wins a trophy. Votes must be kept confidential at all times. The club will make an award to each member of team s winning premierships. Coaches are to supply their trophy and or premiership winner s names to the Secretary within 24 hours of their last game. 10

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 5 All players representing the Club must be dressed in official club playing uniforms This includes our Club socks (complete with club logo) which are registered by the Club with the Association and form part of our Club uniform. Umpires have the authority to remove players from the court, who are not dressed in the club s registered uniform. Under no circumstances are uniforms to be shortened by players (refer Players Code of Behavior) Gemini Netball Club Inc is a new club and is equally proud of our teal, black, purple and light grey. Whilst not essential, it is desirable that all Club coaches dress in appropriate Club uniforms, whilst representing our Club during competition evenings and afternoons. All club clothing can be ordered from the Club s Uniform Coordinator 14

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 6 Medical Equipment The Club will provide each Coach with a first aid kit This kit is to be fully maintained by coaches at all times during the season. Replacement items are to be ordered through the Club s Secretary Supplies contained within the kit are for firs aid only. Players who require strapping as a precautionary and preventative measure must supply their own tape. Paracetamol - eg: Panadol must not be administered to any player by any coach. All first aid kits are to be handed back at the end of each season to be checked and replenished. 15

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 7 COACH SELECTION Anyone wishing to coach a team for the Gemini Netball Club Inc is required to apply in writing on the Club s Application Form. (example attached) All applications will be assessed by the Executive Committee and coaches appointed to teams. If there is more than one (1) applicant for a specific team, the applicant with the most qualifications and/or experience will be the first choice. If the most qualified person has been the coach of this team for an extended period, they may not be considered again. Other applicants should then be appointed to the 2 nd, 3 rd teams Any coach without a team will be appointed to a team without a coach by mutual agreement. All coaches will receive an Offer of Coaching position within the Gemini Netball Club Inc (in accordance with guideline # 1), which will advise them of the team they have been appointed to coach. This agreement will be for the duration of the upcoming season only. This offer will also advise the coach of the remuneration they are entitled to, their duties and responsibilities and the equipment that the Club will provide. Compliance with the Rules of Netball, SA Districts Netball Association By-laws and Gemini Netball Club Inc Rules is a condition of coaching and failure to comply may result in disciplinary action being taken by the Committee. Coaches are required to sign this offer and return the signed copy to the Club. The Club Secretary will hold all signed agreements. 16

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 7 TEAM SELECTION All players who wish to play for Gemini Netball Club Inc in the upcoming season are required to complete a player registration form and submit this form with the appropriate fee before any player can be considered for team selection. All players are required to participate in Team selection trials to be considered for selection within the GNC Inc. The Club s Grading Sub-Committee is responsible for overseeing the team selections for all age groups. After registration, the list of players who have registered to play with the club is given to the Grading Sub-Committee. These players are then sorted into their respective age groups and an estimate of the number of teams the club will be fielding for the next season will be made. GRADING PROCESS Coach s Evaluation Prior to team selection trials, all coaches are required to complete player assessment forms and return them to the Secretary. This assessment should be completed fairly and without bias toward any player. As a general rule, nothing should be written that a coach would not be prepared to say directly to a player or to their parents. This information is maintained by the club and remains confidential. It is referred to by the Grading Sub- committee at the time of grading players for the new season. Important to note is the coach s opinion as to whether or not the player should be maintained at a similar level next season or promoted or demoted. The quality of the competition normally increases for the summer season and normally decreases for the winter season. The evaluation into a higher age group is normally more difficult that immediately presumed, due to size difference (in the case of under age players) and experience (in the case of Senior players) It is essential that the column titled promote is completed Some players in your team may not be continuing with the club next season. If any coach is aware of the reason why, it should be noted in the comments column. This form must be completed for each player, whether they are remaining with the club or not this is valuable information and will assist grading of the player if they return to the club. 17

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC GRADING PROCESS Cont d POLICY # 7 A copy of the Player Assessment form is a part of this guideline policy and should be completed and handed to the Secretary prior to trials for the next season. Paper Grading After receiving the Player Assessment forms, the grading sub-committee then conducts a paper grading, where they discuss the recommendations of the previous season s coaches player assessments to work out team numbers and player allocations for the practical grading sessions. Practical Grading The Grading sub-committee members will select a group of graders that will be allocated to an age group. The graders will be selected on their netball experience, and it is not a requirement that they have coached a team in that age group in the season prior. These graders will be required to select players into teams by observing them at practical grading, keeping in mind that a netball team requires a balance of height, agility and ball skills, as well as defenses, centre court and shooters. Grading will be based primarily on the ability and potential ability demonstrated by players at the time of grading. The Club Secretary will then prepare the appropriate paperwork to be submitted to SADNA. Appointment of Coaches Coaches will been appointed to each Team by the Executive Committee and any team without a coach, the committee will appoint a coach from the applicants who have not been appointed a team by mutual agreement. Any suggested changes to the selected teams are to be referred to the Grading subcommittee for final approval. The outgoing coach from the current season may be consulted if further information is required on a particular player or that coach feels there is a need to advise the new coach of an issue/concern with a player. 18

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC Appointment of Coaches cont d POLICY # 7 Coaches will be notified of their Team and players at a Coaches Meeting prior to the commencement of the season. It is the responsibility of the Coach to contact their players and advise them of the training arrangements. Players Responsibilities If a player is unable to attend practical grading, the player or parent/guardian must notify a member of the Committee (the Secretary) prior to Team Selection (trials). Placement into a team for this player will be based upon paper grading. Players need to arrive promptly and appropriately dressed and equipped for grading sessions. Al players are required to perform to the best of their ability at grading sessions. While it would be ideal to place players with their friends, or in a team of their parents preference the grading committee s duty is to select the best mix of teams to represent our Club. We encourage our players to accept their placement and work with their coach towards improving g their skills to enable them to be considered for a higher grade next season. We encourage our players to accept their team and make new friends and once the season starts children usually settle in and enjoy playing netball. The support of parents is greatly encouraged for this to occur smoothly. The Club provides the opportunity for all players to be moved up or down during the first four (4) weeks of competition or at any time during the season should their performance during this season warrant any changes. Members of the Grading subcommittee will have the opportunity to look at players during their training sessions and games if required. The Gemini Netball Club Inc aims to ensure team grading is conducted fairly and effectively. Players and parents are urged to be objective and reasonable in their expectations. Disputes If a player or parent/guardian feels she has been unjustly treated in the grading process, her concerns and any supporting information should be put in writing to the Club Secretary. 19

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC Disputes cont d POLICY # 7 The Grading sub-committee will then reconsider the grading decision. The Committee may utilize other information to assist its deliberation including coaching reports from the previous season. The President as Chair of the Grading Sub-Committee will inform the player of the committee s decision as soon as possible. If the player is still dissatisfied, the matter may be submitted to the Club s Executive Committee for resolution. Grading Criteria To successfully grade players into teams at the beginning of the season, a few rules and guidelines need to be followed. The key to successful grading is placing players into teams according to their 1. Discipline as a team player 2. Talent/Agility 3. Netball Maturity 4. Tactical ability 5. Confidence 6. Maturity as a person Discipline as a team player Discipline is founded on team unity. That is all players of one (1) mind Their mindset should be 100% netball, with your only objective in getting the ball to the goal shooters. However, a talented team may have a few players who are not putting in effort. How players train during the week is how they will play on match day. It is all to do with attitude. Wrong attitudes are lost opportunities and a decline in court discipline. For a team to succeed and reach the grand final all players must be dedicated and on fire to win every training session and match. TEAM UNITY is dedication 20

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 7 Talent You need to be careful in selecting a player on pure talent alone because of ego and self-centered play. Unless she is exceptional and your team is lacking in a particular court position you would avoid selecting such a player. Players must play as a team not as individuals. No matter how talented a player may be she is not the team. The team that wins the grand final all work well together. A talented player is often a weak link not the lesser skilled player. Anyone with average ability can be trained to play well. Agility (Player agility ) Netball maturity A team needs several players with the ability to adapt to other court positions. It is important to have versatility within your team in case of (a) injury and (b) tactical ability to courter act a strong opposition team. If there is little or no versatility in the team, your opposition will work you out very smartly. Talent is just as much about ball skill as it is about netball savvy. The secret behind maturity is every player has complete concentration for ALL four quarters Tactical ability You ll often see coaches training their teams effectively with drills, skills and foot work but nothing on tactical play. Netball is tactical game. What happens when two (2) teams equally matched in fitness, skill and discipline meet? Who will win the game? A proficient team in court speed and passing, with understanding of tactical play is on the way to the grand final. A tactical netball team can adapt and change strategy (change plan of attack) quickly. This is where having a coach who understands tactics will pay dividends to your team. The theory of tactical play is to keep the ball in your possession for as long as possible. 21

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 7 Confidence Often a competent and skilled player will not want to go up a grade simply because she thinks she won t meet the standards of the new team. Even is she is a class player. Often lacking confidence is confused with nerves and the meeting of new players. After a chat and encouragement from the coach and older team members in a couple of weeks the player will be well settled into the team. It s silly not to accept the challenge because of a few per-season nerves, they will soon disappear. Please don t confuse this with what is termed a confidence player, who will always have difficulty in playing well under pressure. Maturity as a person A common mistake is to select a player on her talent and skill alone without taking into consideration her maturity as a team player. eg: a talented C grade player may be a top goal shooter or have spaghetti arms as wing attack but she still giggles and worries about who is texting her on the mobile phone. She does not have the concentration powers required for an hour s solid netball. A mature netball team with tactical ability is preferable to highly skilled players who are not ready for the seriousness of top level competition. Ability In assessing he ability of a player, the following should be considered: 1. Footwork/Movement skills balanced landing and moving, demonstrating good body control, changing direction effectively and appropriately. 2. Ball Handling catching effectively, passing accurately, using a variety of passes in appropriate situations, using more advanced skills such as faking a pass, one hand control and passing on either side. 3. Attacking skills moving into or creating space with basic leads, dodges and changes of direction, using a variety and/or combination of attacking moves, an awareness of the use of space, shooting action and accuracy, using more advanced skills such as double dodge, half and full roll front cut. 22

Defending skills eg: recovering to three (3) feet, getting hands over the ball, shadowing effectively, effective footwork, body control and positioning, defending from front, side and back, defending the shot, using more advanced skills such as sagging, anticipating and positioning for intercepts, communicating, switching with and covering team mates. 5. Perception/Cognition skills awareness of space, players, ball and game situations, on-court decision-making, timing of movement and pass release, pass selection, creating and play options, reading the game, concentration, performance under game pressure. 23

Purpose The purpose of this policy is to ensure grading of teams is conducted fairly and effectively and in the best interests of the Club and players. Grading is the process of establishing the number and composition of Gemini Netball Club Inc (GNC) teams to compete in the SA Districts Netball Association (SADNA) competition. Grading is influenced by the number and ages of players registered with GNC. Grading will aim to achieve teams that have a balanced group of players in playing positions and ability levels. Constitution framework Membership 1. Any person who is interested in the objects and interests of the Club and is willing to abide by the player s expectations and coaches guidelines policy booklets shall be eligible for membership. Policy Definitions 1. A player is any person who has applied for membership of the Club and has paid the appropriate fees as determined by the Club. 2. COACHES CODE OF BEHAVIOR Gemini Netball Club Inc coaches are required to- Display control, respect, dignity and professionalism to all involved with the sport this includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, players, parents and spectators regardless of their age, ability, cultural background, gender or religion. Encourage your players to demonstrate the same qualities. Be professional in and accept responsibility for your actions. Operate within the rules and spirit of the sport. Abuse, bullying and sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Language, manner, punctuality, preparation and presentation should display high standards. Be a positive role model for your sport and players. Maintain appropriate records Ensure the player s time spent with you is positive experience by keeping netball fun and enjoyable. All players are deserving of equal attention and opportunities. Cater for all levels and player abilities ensuring that all players have equal opportunities to acquire skills, raise self esteem and increase confidence. Facilitate the development of club members through keeping your skills and training up to date to assist players to reach their full netball potential. Treat each athlete as an individual. Be fair, considerate and honest with players. Ensure physical contact with players is appropriate to the situation at all times and necessary only for the development of their player s skills. Set reasonable outcomes and goals for players. Be considerate and empathetic to player s personal needs and take into consideration when planning sessions that players and members who have other interests and commitments which may occasional impact on their netball. Refrain form any form of personal abuse towards your players. This includes verbal, physical and emotional abuse. Be alert to any forms of abuse directed towards your athletes from other sources whilst they are in your care. Ensure you fulfill your obligation to Duty of Care. As a volunteer you have an obligation to take all reasonable care to avoid causing foreseeable harm to another person or their property. GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 1A 33

COACHES CODE OF BEHAVIOR Provide a safe environment for training and competition making sure that all equipment and facilities meet safety standards. Equipment, rules, training and the environment need to be appropriate for the age and ability of the athletes. Show concern and caution towards sick and injured athletes, seeking appropriate medical assistance if required. Provide a modified training program where appropriate. Allow further participation in training and competition only when appropriate. Encourage athletes to seek medical advice when required. Maintain the same interest and support towards sick and injured athletes. Adhere to the clubs policy regarding equal court time during minor round games. Major round games will be at the discretion of the coach and court time may be reduced for non attendance without notification at training. Adhere to the clubs privacy policy when dealing with member s personal information. Ensure players are aware that they may be required to fill in for higher grades if necessary. Ensuring member s personal information is only given to the appropriate people and that all grading information and teams placement is held in private with the committee until a coaches meeting prior to the commencement of the season. Develop a positive sport environment by allowing for he special needs of the players (especially children), by emphasizing enjoyment and by providing appropriate development and competitive experiences. Ensure that everyone (administrators, coaches, players, umpires, parents, spectators and sponsors) emphasize fair play in netball activities and games. CODES OF BEHAVIOR As a player for the Gemini Netball Club Inc you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any activity or event organized on behalf of the Club. It is an expectation that all players registered will abide by this Code of Behavior. Respect the rights, dignity and value all fellow netballers and officials regardless of their age, gender religion, ability and cultural background. Players are club members and are entitled to a vote at any club general meeting. Players under the age of 16 are not eligible to vote. A parent may vote for the member. Players must abide by the club Constitution. When not involved with actual play, the players must abide by the Spectators Code of Behavior, policy 1E Players must abide by SA Districts Netball Assoc rules and by-laws. Players are to follow directions given by the coach and never argue with coach or netball official. Players will act in a sportsperson like manner at all times whilst representing the Gemini Netball Club Inc. Treat all players and officials as you would like to be treated. Any form of abuse, bullying or harassment will not be tolerated. Players must attend training sessions. Inability to attend will be assessed on an individual basis. Unless unavoidable, the coach must be notified of your non attendance prior to training. Uniforms must be complete. Uniforms and socks are registered club items and must be correct. Uniforms are NOT allowed to be shortened. Players will assist with fundraising activities. Inability to comply will be assessed on an individual basis. Players may approach a committee member with any queries/problems. These must be in writing and will be taken to a full committee meeting and answered in writing. The coaches guidelines state the following in regard to equal court time. 1. As close to practicable players will receive equal court time during the minor round. 2. Court time during the major round games is at the coaches discretion. 3. Court time may be reduced for non-attendance at training. 4. Players may be required to fill in for a higher grade when necessary. 39

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 1C CODES OF BEHAVIOR The following points refer to all players under the age of 16 years who are referred to as Junior players. As a Junior player for the Gemini Netball Club Inc you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any activity or event organized on behalf of the club. 1. Participate because you enjoy it, not just to please parents and coaches. 2. Know and play by the rules 3. Participate fairly and safely 4. Abide by decisions without argument or bad temper o Captains have the right to approach an umpire during an interval or after the game for clarification of any rule o Approach the umpire in a courteous and polite way Cooperate with your coach and other players o Verbal abuse of officials or other players, deliberately fouling or provoking an opponent and throwing/damaging equipment is not acceptable or permitted. o Treat all players, as you would like to be treated o Ensure that at all times your behavior is fair o Be patient and enthusiastic supporter of fellow players Applaud all good play, by your own team and opponents Be a responsible team member o Always be on time o Encourage and assist all players o Attend all training sessions o Ensure you always bring the appropriate uniform and equipment to training and or matches. Do not engage in practices that affect sporting performance, (alcohol, tobacco and drug use) Respect and acknowledge the contribution of those who create the opportunity for you to play including scorers, coaches, timekeepers, administrators and umpires. 40

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 1D PARENT/GUARDIAN CODE OF BEHAVIOR As a parent/guardian of a player for the Gemini Netball Club Inc you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any activity or event organized on behalf of the club. If your child is interested, encourage them to participate in the appropriate netball activity. However, if your child is not willing to participate, do not force him or her. Remember, children are involved in organized activity for their enjoyment, not yours. Focus upon the child s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning. Teach children that an honest effort is as important as victory, so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment. Encourage children to always play by the rules. Never ridicule or yell at a child for making a mistake or losing a game. Remember that children learn best form example. Applaud good play by all players. If you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the appropriate channels rather than questioning the officials judgment and honesty in public. Remember that officials give their time and effort for your child s enjoyment. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse or sexual harassment from sporting activities. Recognize the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for all the players and deserve your support. Be courteous in communication with administrators, coaches, players and umpires. Teach children to do likewise. Support the use of age appropriate development activities and modified rules. Ensure you personally drop off or pick up your children from at the courts at training and game times. Do not make arrangements to meet your child outside the courts. If you are unable to personally pick up or drop off your child please make alternative arrangements with another parent or contact the coach. Parents are subject to disciplinary measures as decided by the Club s Executive committee. Refusal to comply with any direction made by the club may lead to the Association becoming involved. 41

GEMINI NETBALL CLUB INC POLICY # 1E SPECTATOR CODE OF BEHAVIOR As a spectator involved with the Gemini Netball Club Inc you must meet the following requirements in regard to your conduct during any activity or event organized on behalf of the Club. Remember that children play organized sports for fun. They are not playing for the entertainment of spectators only, nor are they miniature professionals. Applaud good performances and efforts for each team. Congratulate all participants regardless of the game s outcome. Respect the officials decisions. If the is a disagreement follow the appropriate procedure in order to question the decision and teach the children likewise. Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during competition. Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players. Show respect for your team s opponents. Without them there would be no game. Encourage players to follow the rules and the officials decisions. Demonstrate appropriate social behavior by not using foul language, harassing players, coaches or officials. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender. Spectators are subject to disciplinary measures as decided by the Club s Executive Committee. Refusal to comply with any direction made by the club may lead to the association becoming involved. 42
