CVPA VOICE Center for the Visual & Performing Arts At Suitland High School March & April were amazing!. We had Auditions for CVPA on March 4th and hosted over two hundred candidates! Acceptance letters have gone out to 131 new potential CVPA students. They have a few weeks to register and officially become part of CVPA. PGCPS Festivals and Performance Assessments are in full gear and CVPA is at the top in these presentations!

CVPA Auditions On March 4th a small army of potential candidates came to our door step at the CVPA annex. It was a full and active day of excitement and personal determination with parents, actors, dancers, musicians and visual artists dressed in audition gear and armed with talent and instruments as well as focused on the prize of becoming a CVPA student. CVPA Dance On March 15-19, the CVPA Dance Department participated in the 2017 Regional High School Dance Festival. Our Dance students took 4 days of classes taught by college professors and dance professionals. Ten CVPA seniors auditioned before recruiters from colleges, summer intensives, and scholarships and nationally acclaimed, professional level dance programs. Thirty-three (33) offers were given to our dance students. Most of these were a combination of acceptance into a program and scholarships! Way to go Dance! Dance

CVPA Theater A MidSummer Night s Dream This wonderful interpretation of the play was presented by the CVPA Theater Department. It brought merriment and laughter to the entire audience and created an evening of wonder and delight for all of the attendees. Theater
CVPA MUSIC BAND ASSESSMENTS - The PGCPS Band Assessment Festival was held at Wise High School on March 10, 2017. The CVPA Jazz Combo performed at the Prince George s County Public Schools assessments. Ten Band students auditioned and were accepted into the Prince George s County Public School s Honor Jazz Band! Eight of our CVPA Band students received a SUPERIOR rating at the county Solo Ensemble Festival and will now advance to the State Festival! Band ROCKED the Festival! Music
PIANO SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL The following piano majors performed at the Prince George's County Piano Solo & Ensemble Festival. A (1) is the highest possible grade a piano player can receive. Cayla Gavin (Grade 10), Ashley Powell (Grade 11), David Hughes (Grade 10), Alysia Mitchell (Grade 10), Shiana Spencer (Grade 9), Darryl Hester and Shiana Spencer all received a 1. CVPA Theater THEATER ASSESSMENTS The Prince George's County Theatre Assessments took place on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Laurel High School. The following students participated. Solomon Butler, Lauren Miller, Demi Moore, Jada Brown, Jarel Davis, Jayla Felder, Micala Hammond, Michael Chin, Alexander Larson, Charli Parker, Precious Ajayi, Alexa Phillip, Indigo Artis. CVPA received a PROFICIENT rating across the board! Way to go CVPA!! Theater
ROTARY SPEECH CONTEST The Rotary Club Speech Contest first round was won by our very own Imari Pyles. Her speech was passionate and eloquently presented. She will go on to the next level of competitions and will have a chance to win $1,500 in the final presentation. Good luck Imari!! Visual Arts
WILL & JADA SMITH FAMILY FOUNDATION CAREERS IN ENTERTAINMENT TOUR The Discovery Channel held a tour and series of workshop presentations for young people in the Washington DC area. CVPA was there! Our students attended workshops about promoting and networking in the entertainment business. There were also presentations on virtual reality, digital animation, stage make up and many other options for individuals! It was an exciting day for everyone!! Visual Arts January
CVPA attends SHIFT Two premier presenting organizations, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Washington Performing Arts, collaborated to present SHIFT, a week-long spotlight on North American orchestras of all sizes, debuting in the spring of 2017. SHIFT celebrated the vitality, identity, and extraordinary artistry of orchestras and chamber orchestras by creating an immersive festival experience in the nation s capital. CVPA was invited to attend a night performance of SHIFT at the Kennedy Center. The featured artists were the Knights. It was a great evening! CVPA Attends SHIFT Performance
CVPA Visual Arts HOW WE GOT OVER 2017 Black History Month Poster The 2017 Black History Month poster was created by Prince George's County Suitland High School Students who participated in the Black History Program visual arts summer internship program. The body of music which is the subject of the 2017 Black History Month exhibit, examines a variety of African American sacred music traditions (spirituals, hymns, gospel music) from their West African roots through the 21st century. CVPA TV Production CVPA TV Production hosted the 2017 Film Festival Screening Event on March 21. The Film Festival Screening Event provided all of the participating students and classes an opportunity to view all entries and vote for the best choices. This event was part of the performance assessments for the TV Media Production and Technology Integration Curriculum. The winning entries will be screened during an Awards Ceremony at the American Film Institute (AFI) in Silver Spring, Maryland in April. TV Production
CVPA Visual Arts Alumni Update Lawrence Atioque is the official Artist of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. His futuristic work has quickly emerged in today s contemporary art scene. Atioque uses sharp triangular illustrations that are a blend of pop and cubism with a surreal twist. His talents have also attracted the eyes of celebrity clients like Swizz Beatz, Rihanna, Spike Lee, LeBron James and others. Way to go CVPA Alumni!!
