Keystone By Gary Buscombe Keystone skiers braved minus 13 degree temperatures the first day on the slopes. The temperature, coupled with a long bus ride to Colorado on December 26, made the sleepy 32-person ski group anxious to hit the showers and bed early in the evening the next day. Party people on the trip did manage, however, to find the get acquainted wine and cheese party at the hotel. Terri Lewis and Alma Buscombe stayed off the slopes and, after a day of bargain shopping together, set up the room with bowls of hummus, crackers, smoked sausage, cheeses, red and white wine, and assorted drinks. Each day the weather improved by the last day many of the Tulsa Ski Club members were not even wearing their parkas or ski jackets. Trip Captain Gary Buscombe arranged to use the Kincaid bus each day to shuttle skiers to the slopes from Silverthorne because the local transit busses took almost an hour to wind their way through towns enroute to Keystone Resort just seven miles away. A special assessment was collected from skiers to cover the a d d e d transportation costs. The bus was driven by ski club member Gerald Bradley, who was a very personable and safe driver. On the slopes, Jim Constantine once again took Nastar gold medals with his winning times through the gates. Matt M o s s enjoyed getting away from the big crowds at Dercum Mountain and getting to North Peak and the Outback, skiing some blue and an occasional black run. I liked getting Donna Fletcher to ski a black run with me I just hope she forgives me! Asked about the worst part of the trip, Moss said the first lift ride it was COLD! It stopped for 15 minutes halfway up and we were miserable. Marty Peters had great time skiing and visiting with other members and felt a need to apologize for talking everyone s ears off. Jay Menger, son David and daughter Elizabeth also had a super time and are ready to do it again. Mark and Julie Streapy and daughter Sara as well as Kansans Jack Leake and son Austin skied each day and also enjoyed getting to know other Tulsa Ski Club members. A few Arkansas skiers joined the trip this year; the group welcomed Doug and Tracy George, Jacqui and Kendall Dix, and Michael Steenbergen. And Kai Haswell from St. Louis finally met up with us and friend Ashton Williams after a delayed arrival due to heavy snow on his highway route. The pair ventured to Breck one day on the local shuttle to snowboard and came back all smiles. The Albertson Family Glenn, Delonna and Mike and friend Brian Brown skied the slopes hard all week and thoroughly enjoyed their vacation together. Lindsey Guffrey, a newcomer to the club, shared a room at La Quinta with veteran member Regina Mullings and both had a great week of skiing. First-timers Guy and Tammy Yoes and daughter Kacera added a special treat to the week snowmobiling! They put together on their own an exciting wilderness snowmobiling adventure through an outfitter north of Silverthorne near Green Canyon Reservoir. There were 15 participants riding 10 high-powered Polaris snowmobiles, complete with provided snowsuits, boots, and helmets. They toured the backcountry along narrow ridge trails as well as raced one another around a huge oval in a flat meadow. Hot chocolate was served in a tent nearby. Ron Lewis should have been a race car driver he has no fear of speed, tearing around the track at speeds over 50 miles per hour, snow flying everywhere at each skidding turn of the track. 4
