Issue 2 March 2015 Welcome to Airmyn School Gazette. In this newspaper there will be a showcase of what we have been getting up to in the spring term. We hope you enjoy the spring term edition. The Editorial Team The Valentine disco was on 12 th February. KS1 and KS2 have separate discos. KS1 had to take their clothes to school in the morning because their disco is straight after school. KS1 had an hour in the disco. They went home at 4:30 and as they went home KS2 arrived. After a quarter of an hour we had some food. The food was hotdogs and you could have tomato sauce with it if you wanted to. We also had a drink of orange or blackcurrant. Our first game was musical statues and then we played musical bumps. After that we played Pass the Hat that is where you have to stand in a circle and pass the hat and when the music stops whoever has the hat gets to go get their food. At the end of the disco the girls had to group up with a boy and have a couples dance to a love song. It was a competition and Lucy Jackson and Lewis Casson won it. They won strawberry laces. We all had lots of fun! By Evie Moore YOUNG VOICES On Friday 23 rd January Airmyn School visited the Motor Point Arena in Sheffield to take part in Young Voices 2015. We sang the songs: Andrew Lloyd Webber medley, When I grow up, If music be the food, Pop medley, Believe, Tribute to Mandela, All you need is love, Lonely Boy, Rockquiiem, Dies Irea, I wish and Wait for me. KS2 had a great day and enjoyed dancing with Urban Strides and singing Wait for Me with Lucy Spraggen, I Wish with Mic Lowery and Radio Gaga with Tom Billington. Out of this world is a poetry competition for young writers aged 7-11 year old. A lot of schools in the UK are entering. We could choose a theme and our class are doing a space theme because that is our topic and science theme. Out of this world is a great opportunity to boost awareness and interest in poetry for schools creative talent. All the poems had to be in by the 13 th February. Our poems were about an alien ship that landed on earth. All of our poems were really good and I think everyone should win. By Evie Moore On 2 nd of January Class Three started their space topic. We started by learning about the Earth and the Moon. It was very interesting and fun. A few days into our space topic we went in to the hall to go in a planetarium. It was very entertaining and the man who taught us about it was very funny. We are still doing our topic now and in Class 3 we are now learning about the insides of the earth. Just to let you know, there are four cores in the earth! I shall end by telling you that the moon has a crater that is bigger than three Doncasters! By Olivia Bulmer This year Key Stage 2 have been taking part in Read For My School on-line. It has encouraged many of the children to pick up a book and read it. Everyone has been working hard to read as many books as possible and to write a review. There were many prizes to be won and everyone has enjoyed themselves. A travelling Planetarium took place in the hall this term! The Planetarium is a big tent that can fit 50 people at a time! When you look up you can see space. All the classes had a turn. We learnt a lot of facts and Did You Knows. Here are some of them: Did you know? Saturn s rings are made out of ice blocks. Did you know? In the middle of Venus there is a diamond surrounded by water. Isn t that amazing! Did you know? Astronauts drink water out of a machine which turns their urine to water. On 6 th March KS2 had a Celebration Assembly that took place in the hall. Lots of families came. They all enjoyed it. First Cropton showed what they have been learning about recycling. There were three groups in Cropton. The groups were reuse, reduce and recycle. In all the groups they had a play. In the first group they were acting out a play about someone in a shop and showing us that you should buy more food from England and not from abroad. The second group was about Re-using and it had David Cameron in it! The last group was about recycling and their play was about a milkman, that was Harrison and a boy who would not recycle that was Nikita. In the end he did recycle. Dalby Forest did their assembly about World Book Day, Art Day and Science topic work. By Evie Moore On Friday 13 th March it was our mother s day coffee afternoon where mums, grandmas, little brothers and sisters came to watch the whole school sing. Key stage 1 came into the hall at 2:00 to have a drink and a biscuit. Key stage two came in at 2:20 to do the same. At 2:45 the whole school sang: Super Mum My Mum The Chocolate Song Spring Chicken Wake Up I made a love spoon and coloured it in pink, purple and blue and sent it to my family. In Wales they don t send Valentine s Cards, instead they give out Love Spoons to tell their love how much they love them. Love Spoons are very special to people who live in Wales. On the 5 th of March everyone took part in World Book Day. You could come to school as a character from one of your favourite books. In assembly each class walked round the hall to show their costumes. Everyone made a brilliant effort for the day and it was a lot of fun. Each class had different activities, for example class 3 wrote stories about Raj from David Walliams books. Even the teachers took part and made the effort to get dressed up. By Tiffany Wan and Jasmine Martinson On Friday 20 th March 2015 the partial solar eclipse took place in the sky. It wasn t cloudy so it was really easy to see the sun and the moon. An eclipse is when the moon covers the sun. When the moon went over the sun it became cold and dark. As the moon moved through the sky it started to rotate. First it started as a crescent looking to the right. After about half an hour the moon had rotated to look like a smile in the sky. By Keeley Nundy Page 4 of 7
On Monday 2 nd March Airmyn School had a whole school art day. All the classes studied an artist of their own. CLASS 1: In class one they studied the artist Alexander Calder who worked on shapes. Ava Gray said I liked it all. CLASS 2: Class two studied the artist Wassily Kandinsky who got his inspiration from listening to music and painting what he heard. Hazel Norton said I really enjoyed the painting. CLASS 3: Henry Moore was studied in Class 3 where they learned how to sculpt like him and made a model like his. Kaycie Collins commented I liked making replicas of the models. CLASS 4: In class four they didn t have a specific artist and were just drawing, painting and sketching. Jack Merrington commented I liked doing the sketching of flowers. By Isobel Stones Two pupils from Key Stage 2 went to Eastrington Primary School to represent our school as energy champions. The two pupils were Alfie Bristow and Jasmine Martinson. We learnt about different forms of energy and how it works. The same energy people came earlier on in the year to do some activities with us. East Ridings schools saved a lot of money by using the energy saving tips. To save energy the school was given a competition to make an energy sticker. Football Finals On the 4 th February, six of the boys from Class 4: Harrison Clarke, Alex Bottomly, James Greenhalgh, Flynn Ullathorn, Jack Merrington and Archie Hall went to the football finals at Goole High School. Firstly we played against Parkside and unfortunately we lost 3-0. Secondly we played Marshlands 2-1. Finally we played St Josephs and won 3-1. In the end we came 2 nd out of 3 other schools. By Archie Hall and Sean Wood Class three went to a dance festival at the Junction on Tuesday 17 th March. We danced to a song called SPACE JAM. There were alot of people watching and a lot of schools performing their different dances. Class three went last year, but all the performances were different. Class three danced against Marshlands, St. Josephs, Parkside, Boothferry, Swinefleet and Riverside. Following on from our great qualification in the autumn term, we took part in a netball cup final on Wednesday 28 th January. Our first match was against Hook and we drew 0-0. Our Final game was against Marshlands where we won 2-0. We all played well and came 3 rd out of four schools. On 3 rd March we went to a Bench Ball Tournament at Goole Academy. Here is a picture of the team. In our first round we played Hook and we lost 3=4, but it was very close. In our second round we played Kingsway and won 7=5. Next round we played Boothferry and we won 5=3, then we played Reedness and we drew 3=3. In our next round we played Marshlands and won 3=1 and for our last round we played Swinefleet and won 7=4. Now for the results time: In 3 rd place AIRMYN SCHOOL!!!! On Friday 13 th February, there was a bike helmet assembly. The East Riding bike team came in to talk about how to be safe on your bike or scooter. We had an experiment with an egg to show you what would happen if you didn t have a helmet. The egg had its own helmet which protected it! They also introduced Fit Fridays where you could come to school by another transport. Hopefully everyone will have an impact on this and make Airmyn a safer place. By Jasmine Martinson and Tiffany Wan Second place was Hook and in first place Kingsway, but it was very close if we had only got 3 more people on the Bench we would have won. By Abigail Johnson It was an amazing night at Goole High School on 10 th March. The weather was very helpful and we had an outstanding night competing against other schools from the Goole area. There were great performances from everyone, WELL DONE!!!! Here are the results: 1. Hook 29 points 2. Kingsway 29 points 3. Airmyn 25 points We came 3 rd out of 8 teams.
