1. The History of Soccer: Movable Timeline Page 5 Ball games originated in ancient times when people started playing games for sport and recreation. From historical records it was found that the Chinese played a ball game, aiming for a hole between two poles, in the second century BC. There are traces of other soccer-type ball games in Asia and civilizations from America played a ball game that is a hybrid between soccer, volleyball and basketball. The Americans played with a rubber ball, which explains why they are so skilled in playing soccer! Ancient Romans and Greeks also had their own versions of the ball game and it might be related to the games from Asia. As we go forward in history to the middle ages, football games concentrated more around Europe. The Europeans played a type of town football that involved two towns playing against each other. The teams had unlimited players, as long as the team members were from the same town. Both teams had to kick the ball towards a landmark and defend their own territory. It was quite chaotic and violent, and the ball was an empty, inflated pig s bladder. Because of its wild nature, this game was banned in 1314 by Nicholas de Farndone, the Mayor of London. This was the point in history that the word football was used for the first time. Despite being banned, the game continued to grow and was introduced into schools to keep young boys fit. However, the game was becoming more structured with rules, teams, positions, referees and coaches but each school had their own set of rules that differed from place to place. Football was growing in schools and by the 19th century the idea of an organized tournament was born. The game spread beyond the schools to factories and other organizations. By 1862 a semi-professional club was formed by Cobb Morley in Barnes the Barnes Club. He also suggested that a central governing body must be formed to regulate the rules. This idea was widely welcomed and all the main members of the clubs around London met on 26 October 1863 at the Freemasons Tavern in London. They started the Football Association and the proposed rules of the game were discussed. Cobb Morley drew up a document called the Laws of the Game. On 8 December 1863 the rules were accepted by the Football Association and have since stood as the basis of the game, but it has been modified through time to adapt to the modern age. On this day in 1863, rugby and soccer was finally split and the rules have evolved completely differently so that the two games are totally irreconcilable today. National teams were first formed at the beginning of the 20th century and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA TM ) was founded in Paris on 21 May 1904. FIFA TM is the governing body of football. Its headquarters are located in Zürich, Switzerland, and its current president is Sepp Blatter. FIFA TM is responsible for the organization of football s major international tournaments, most notably the FIFA TM Soccer World Cup.
How to make the movable timeline: Page 6 Cut out the patterns on A1 and A2. Paste the two timelines together as marked. Cut out the rectangles on the soccer ball. Slide the soccer ball over the timeline as shown on the photo below. When pasting the timeline into your lapbook, put glue only under the two dotted rectangles. This will ensure that your soccer ball can move over the timeline.
2. The Rules of the Game: Flap Book Page 7 There are 17 basic laws in soccer. These rules stay basically the same as a player move up through different stages of play. We will discuss them only briefly. If you want to go more into detail, visit the following website: http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/federation/81/42/36/ lawsofthegameen.pdf Soccer is a game in which two teams of 11 players (one of whom is the goal keeper) try to kick or head a ball into the opponents goal. Players score a goal when they succeed in moving the whole ball over the opposing team s goal line, between the goalposts and under the crossbar. Players may use any part of their body except their arms and hands. Up to a maximum of three substitutes may be used in any match played in an official competition organized under the auspices of FIFA TM, the confederations or the national associations. The ball is out of play when it has wholly crossed the goal line or touch line - whether on the ground or in the air - and when play has been stopped by the referee. The game is controlled by one referee on the playing field and two assistant referees placed on opposite touchlines. The winning team is the one which has scored the most goals at the end of the game. The duration of an official match is 90 minutes played in two halves - each half lasting 45 minutes. 3. The History of the FIFA TM Soccer World Cup: Flap Book Page 9 The idea of an international world cup event was born in France in the 1920 s under the leadership of Jules Rimet. The first world cup event was held in Uruguay in 1930 and the only European teams involved were France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and Romania. Seven South American teams participated, including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru. The first world cup was won by Uruguay when they beat Argentina 4-2 in the final match. Since 1930, the world cup was held every four years, except when it was cancelled during World War I. Since then it has rapidly advanced in popularity and prestige to become the most widely viewed single sporting event in the world. To date, only teams from South America and Europe have won the world cup. Brazil has won the most events, that is 4 world cups, Italy and West Germany are both second with 3 events each, then Argentina and Uruguay both with two events, and France and England both with one victory each. The World Cup Trophee symbolizes the dream of every soccer player in the world, and South Africa is proud to be the host nation of the 2010 FIFA TM Soccer World Cup. I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion. Mia Hamm
