Winners of 10 of its last 12 games, Houston tied for second in the league with No. 11/14 Wichita State with a 14-4 conference record, the third-highest conference win total in school history. Houston enters this weekend s games ranked No. 21 in the latest Associated Press and USA TODAY Coaches polls. HEADLINES and STORYLINES Cougars have outrebounded all but five opponents in 2017-18... Rebounding margin of +7.7 is ninth-best in the nation in 2017-18, the ninth-highest mark in UH singleseason history and the biggest margin since the 1982-83 team finished at +9.2. Houston is ranked among the nation s top-20 leaders in winning percentage (.800, 19th), field goal percentage defense (39.7, 9th), rebounding margin (+7.7, 9th) and scoring margin (+12.8, 13th). With his American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year award earlier this week, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson collected his fifth conference honor from his fourth different league... Looking to become the 13th coach in NCAA history to take 4+ schools to the NCAA Tournament. Senior guard Rob Gray has established himself as one of the American Athletic Conference s elite stars... Third in the league with 18.1 points per game and ranks among league s top-15 leaders in assists (4.7, 3rd), free throw percentage (81.2, 6th), assist-turnover ratio (2.08, 4th) and steals (1.1, 15th). Senior guard Rob Gray is one of two players to rank among The American s Top-4 leaders in both scoring and assists. Junior guard Corey Davis Jr. (43.6, 24th) and sophomore guard Armoni Brooks (43.4, 26th) and are each ranked among the nation s top-26 leaders in 3-point field goal percentage... Houston is the only team with two players among the top 26. Junior guard Corey Davis Jr. leads The American with 3.1 3-point field goals made per game and ranks 27th nationally and fourth in the league in 3-point field goal percentage (43.6)... Davis has drained at least one trey in each of the last 26 games, tying for the third-longest streak in Houston history. Rob Gray continues to rise on the Cougars career scoring chart and recently moved into 10th in school history with 1,581 points... Junior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. has 377 assists during his career and stands seventh in school history with that total. JERRY WEST AWARD FINALISTS presented to nation s top off-guard Player Rob Gray Grayson Allen Tyus Battle Carsen Edwards Marcus Foster Chandler Hutchison Fletcher Magee E.C. Matthews Kendrick Nunn Allonzo Trier School Houston Duke Syracuse Purdue Creighton Boise State Wofford Rhode Island Oakland Arizona SHARP SHOOTER Senior guard Wes VanBeck established himself as one of the Cougars and the American Athletic Conference s premier shooters during the 2016-17 season. Connected on 48.4 percent (46-of- 95) of his 3-point tries to set a Houston single-season record... Topped previous record of 45.6 percent (72-of-158) set by Byron Smith in 1989-90. Buried 87.3 percent (55-of-63) of his tries from the free throw line for the seventh-highest mark in Houston single-season history. Would have led the American Athletic Conference in both categories but fell just shy of the league s statistical minimums. SEASON OPENER HISTORY Cougars opened their 73rd season with an 81-53 win over McNeese on Nov. 10 inside H&PE Arena. With that win, Houston improved to 53-20 record in season openers during its history. Cougars now have won their last nine and 13 of their last 14 season openers... Only a 65-63 loss to Georgia Southern on the first day of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer in Durham, N.C., prevents a longer streak. Houston has won handily in recent history, winning their last nine season openers by an average of 22.6 points per game... That includes back-to-back 41-point wins against Prairie View A&M (110-69, Nov. 18, 2015) and Morgan State (93-52, Nov. 11, 2016). KELVIN SAMPSON in SEASON OPENERS With the Cougars 81-53 win over McNeese on Nov. 10, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson improved to 23-2 all-time in season openers during his award-winning career... Sampson s game-by-game records at Montana Tech (1981-85) are not available. In season openers, Sampson is now 4-0 during his Houston tenure and posted a 2-0 record at Indiana, an 11-1 mark at Oklahoma and was 6-1 at Washington State. Sampson s teams have now won their last 10 season openers and 23 of his last 24... Only a 68-62 loss to Alabama at the AT&T Wireless Classic in New York on Nov. 14, 2002, prevents a longer streak. During his career, Sampson s teams have won by an average of 23.1 points per game (532 points in 23 games). In his teams 32 season-opening wins, only two teams have won by fewer than double digits... His first team at Houston in 2014-15 claimed a 77-74 win at Murray State on Nov. 14, 2014, in his most recent single-digit, season-opening win. IN THE NBA With the start of the 2017-18 NBA season, three Cougars were competing at the game s highest level. Damon Jones (1994-97) is an assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers... Jonathon Simmons (2011-12) is in his third season in the NBA but his first with the Orlando Magic, while Damyean Dotson (2015-17) is in his rookie season with the New York Knicks. Damon Jones Following his Houston playing career, Jones competed in the NBA from 1999-09 for 10 teams: New Jersey Nets (1999); Boston Celtics (1999); Golden State Warriors (1999-00); Dallas Mavericks (1999-00); Vancouver Grizzlies (2000-01); Detroit Pistons (2001-02); Sacramento Kings (2002-03); Milwaukee Bucks (2003-04); Miami Heat (2004-05); Cleveland Cavaliers (2005-08) and Bucks (2008-09)... Jonathon Simmons After playing for his first two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs (2015-17), Simmons signed with the Orlando Magic in the summer of 2017. Damyean Dotson Dotson was taken with the No. 44 overall pick by the New York Knicks in the Second Round of the 2017 NBA Draft... GAME OF THE CENTURY 50th ANNIVERSARY THE HOUSTON ASTRODOME On Jan. 20, 1968, the second-ranked Cougars faced No. 1 UCLA in a regular-season game that grabbed the attention of the entire nation. Featuring two of the greatest players in NCAA history in UH s Elvin Hayes and UCLA s Lew Alcindor, the game was played inside the Houston Astrodome, a first in the history of that legendary facility. Nearly 53,000 fans poured into the Astrodome that night, making it the largest crowd to that point to watch a college basketball game. However, those fans in attendance were far from alone. This game was the first regular-season game televised lived to a national audience. The game and the excitement it generated did far more than determine the following week s No. 1 team in both the Associated Press and UPI polls. It changed the way the country looked at college basketball. For those and many other reasons, this regular-season game is rightly hailed as college basketball s Game of the Century. Houston Head Coach Guy V. Lewis conceived the idea of playing a game between college basketball s top two teams and two greatest players. The Cougars had just returned from their first NCAA Final Four, while UCLA was the defending national champion. Lewis was convinced that a game between the two schools in the Astrodome would attract the largest audience ever to watch a college basketball game. But, even he didn t realize how many fans the game would attract as 52,693 people attended the game and millions watched on national television. THE GAME The crowd was ready for an epic battle and was not disappointed. The two teams fought back and forth during the first six minutes of the contest before Houston took a 13-12 lead when George Reynolds made a bank shot with 13:45 remaining in the first half. The Cougars held a 37-28 lead before UCLA rallied and closed to within 46-43 at halftime. The second half opened with both heavyweights giving each other their best shots and waiting for the other team to fall. With the the game tied at 69-69 and only 44 seconds remaining, Houston gained possession and raced down court ahead of UCLA s famed full-court pressure defense. The Cougars worked the ball to Hayes for a final shot, but UCLA s Jim Nielsen fouled the Cougar center with 28 seconds remaining. Hayes went to the free throw line with a chance to score the winning points. A 60-percent free-throw shooter on the season, Hayes made both free throws for two of his game-high 39 points to give the Cougars a 71-69 lead. UCLA had one last chance to tie the score, but the Bruins turned the ball over to seal the win for Houston. In addition to his points, Hayes led all players with 15 rebounds while helping limit Alcindor to only 15 points on 4-of-18 shooting with 12 rebounds. It was the only time during his collegiate career that Alcindor shot less than 50 percent from the field. A BROADER IMPACT The game was televised nationally by the TVS television network with Dick Enberg calling the play-by-play action and Bob Pettit providing color analysis. Officials with TVS paid $27,000 for the broadcast rights to the game, which was televised live on 120 stations across the nation. This was the first regular-season NCAA basketball game televised. Each team received $125,000 for the game at a time when the payout for competing in the NCAA Tournament later that season was less than $32,000. One year after the Game of the Century, NBC became the first major network to broadcast the NCAA basketball championship at a cost of $500,000. OTHER NOTES While the game was played in the Houston Astrodome, the court was brought in from the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. A little more than three months later, the two teams competed on that same floor during the NCAA Final Four at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. This time, the Bruins claimed the upper hand with a 101-69 win to advance to the NCAA national championship game.
