ASU WOMEN'S SOCCER (CONT.) HEAD COACH KEVIN BOYD Kevin Boyd was named as head coach of the Arizona State University women's soccer program on March 30, 2007. The third head coach in the 11-year history of the Sun Devil program, Boyd brings a successful track record and years of collegiate coaching experience to Tempe following a 10-year stint as the head coach of Pac-10 rival California where he collected a 124-63-20 record and eight appearances in the NCAA tournament. Boyd, 39, was instrumental in building Cal into one of the top programs in the Pac-10 Conference as his squads finished in the upper-half of the league standings nine times. Included in that span was his team's 1998 co-championship crown along with second place finishes in 2000 and 2005. From 1998-2002 (five years), Cal advanced to the NCAA tournament, setting a program record for consecutive appearances. Boyd's teams also advanced to the past three tournaments with the 2005 squad reaching the third round, marking the deepest run in the tournament since the 1988 team also made the third round. Also in 2005, Boyd's team built a 7-1-1 record in the Pac-10 to earn a second-place finish while going 16-4-2 overall. For his efforts, the conference coaches selected Boyd as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year. That same year, his team set records for lowest goals against average (0.475), which also was the seventh-best total in the nation that year, while tying for school marks with 14 shutouts and fewest goals allowed (11). Under Boyd, who served as the program's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 1996 prior to his 10- year run as head coach, the Golden Bears produced 28 first or second-team All-Pac-10 Conference selections while also garnering 21 selections to the Academic All- Pac-10 first or second teams. Additionally, Boyd's teams carried a stellar overall GPA, leading all Cal teams during the 2003-04 season (3.34). QUICK NOTES ON BOYD Holds a career record of 130-67-20 (.659) in 11 years as a head coach (all with California) Led Cal to eight appearances in the NCAA Championships, including each of the past three seasons Selected as the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in 2005 after team went 16-4-2 (7-1-1 in the Pac-10) Holds the second-highest winning percentage of any Pac-10 coach His teams have been ranked in the national Top 25 ever year Strength of schedule also has been ranked in the Top 20 every year Was a four-year letter winner at Tri-State University (Angola, Ind.) and is a member of its Hall of Fame Played one season of international soccer for Hamar Kameratena (Norwegian Elite - First Division) in 1990 Scoring by Committe Eight different Sun Devils have scored so far in the 2007 season. The first weekend of action saw both junior Carla Scanniello and freshman Karin Volpe score their first career goals. On the road trip to SMU and TCU, five others netted goals, including sophomore Carly Kallas who put in two at SMU. This past weekend junior Kylla Sjoman scored the first goal of her Sun Devil career in a 4-0 win over Creighton. National Polls While the Sun Devils remain unranked in the national polls, they are currently ranked No. 15 in the Soccer Buzz West Region. Crane Climbs Charts With her two goals against San Diego State on Sept. 28, senior Courtney Crane moves into eighth place on ASU's all-time career goals scored list with 14 goals. She also moved into ninth place in ASU's all-time career points category; she currently has 35. Making Their Debut Through the first eight matches of the 2007 season, 23 of the 26 players on the roster have seen action on the pitch. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaite Cochran saw the first action of her Sun Devil career Friday against San Diego State. She played 14 minutes and recorded one save; she also saw action against Creighton adding another save. Additionally, six of the 23 players were true freshmen; Alexandra Elston, Erica Long and Karin Volpe have all recorded their first collegiate starts. Freshmen Akaylah Fisher, Jessie Richardson and Jill Shoquist have also seen time on the pitch this season. Powered Pac Eight of the 10 teams in the Pac-10 conference currently have winning records. Stanford (9-1-0) is ranked No. 1 nationally by Soccer Buzz; others ranked include No. 4 UCLA (5-1-2), No. 7 USC (8-1-1), No. 17 California (8-2-0) and No. 30 Washington State (6-1-2). Strong Slate As always, the Sun Devils will once again play a solid schedule of opponents, including a Final Four participant from one year ago in UCLA. Arizona State also has matches slated against six foes ranked in the Soccer Buzz Preseason Top 25, including No. 2 UCLA, No. 6 Stanford, No. 9 Texas, No. 14 USC, No. 15 Santa Clara and No. 19 Oregon. Three of the six matches will be on the road, all of which are Pac-10 contests. Welcoming Coach Boyd Boyd was named as head coach of the Arizona State University women's soccer program on March 30, 2007. 2007 ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY SOCCER PAGE 2
