Distance Website DVDs & Books Website Shop. 01 02 03 04 05 06 Karate Nage-Waza (Throwing Techniques) As an experiment, read the following lines - The primary principle...is to attack and defend in single time. And: Combatants...used footwork, avoidance and the ability to judge and manipulate timing and distance.. These skills were supplemented with techniques for grappling, wrestling, kicking and throwing the opponent Sounds familiar? I could be outlining elements of medieval Japanese fighting arts, because the concepts are identical and are often to be found as admonitions to students by the old martial arts masters. bat as practised in medieval Europe in the Fifteenth century! Version of O-soto-gari Major outer reap Version of O-soto-gari Major outer reaping throw Although, as with the samurai in Japan, the sword was considered the primary weapon, it was necessary to study the empty-hand skills to use when distance demanded or the combatants were disarmed. Naturally, if they were obvious then there would be no difficulty in showing what they were. As, however, the bunkai was usually kept a closely-guarded secret by the master and his uchi-deshi (inner students) this was not possible. So, to describe the process briefly Firstly it is necessary to have a good foundation in the grappling and throwing arts such as Judo or Ju-jutsu, then have lots of experience of kumite of various forms, and a dash of real-life reality helps to sort out the realistic from the bullshit! It helps to have a background Why Kissaki-kai? Kissaki-Kai teaches effective defensive karate Kissaki-Kai promotes reality in training Sport & Fun are not forgotten! It was complete with side annotations to describe the action. Sometimes people ask me some very good questions, and one recently was - roughly: How do you know what the throws in Kata bunkai actually were? Version of Tae-otoshi Body drop throw of university post-graduate level research in medieval historical periods and be accustomed to translations and transliterations of old documents and sources. Finally, add a dash of experience and reason, and there you are! I came to study the throwing

Volume 14 issue 6 page 5 Page 2 techniques of the Kata eventually as a response to my early admonitions from the Japanese sensei NOT to use throwing techniques, because: karate was a striking art and didn t utilize throws! Well, you all know my reaction to that! Of course modern karate didn t use throwing techniques (other than leg sweeps) because it was a sadly neutered sport (safe) form of the original defensive art. However, it soon became obvious to me from my research that even such a short time ago as in the1930s, karate certainly did include throwing techniques, and one could find evidence of this in the early publications of the Father of Japanese karate Funakoshi Gichin. My sources included studying the various copies of the Bubishi the so-called Bible of karate written down and compiled by an unknown Okinawan master which was kept highly secret in order to protect the special skills of combat, Kyusho, and herbal medicine, which it contains, among other fascinating sections. which obviously include throwing techniques, and I show some in this article, together with some from the German Fechtsbuch for comparison. Studying the history of the development of Jujutsu also shed much light on the type and nature of original throwing techniques and their underlying concepts, so eventually it became perfectly obvious that a complete toolbox of fighting and defensive Version of Kubi-nage The Bubishi Funakoshi sensei - Tani-otoshi Rentan Karate Goshin Jutsu numerous methods of throwing an attacker to the ground. A close look at the work of Master Funakoshi clearly demonstrates that he had a good understanding of the use of throwing techniques in his karate, which was, in turn, the product of his teachers (mainly master Itosu and master Azato). Version of Leg-scissor throw Note similarity of hand position We don t know exactly when it was compiled but it was certainly extant in the late middle ages, and influenced the studies of many later karate masters. Master Funakoshi quotes from it extensively in his early publications. For example, in the Bubishi there is a specific section of advice on grappling and escapes, which master Funakoshi quotes. Some of the line-drawings in The Bubishi depict representations of 48 Kempo waza, Version of Kubi-nage Fecht Buch combat skills would simply be incomplete without Clearly then, in that period in Okinawa there was no distinction separating the throwing and the striking arts. Given that this was so, then it would have been unthinkable that these nage-waza would have been omitted from the Kata. Just like many other techniques however, they would not have been easily recognized by potential enemies.

s Page 3 These are by no means the only sources which I consulted; there is much to be gained from studying the early Jujutsu training manuals, plus carefully looking at early Chinese Chin Na combat grappling and controlling methods. Then - frankly - developing some skills in throwing and grappling will be invaluable in understanding where these fit into the Kata, as well as being essential to a full armory of your personal defensive techniques. Just becoming very familiar with the feel of combat and recognising the opportunities which arise in the fluidity and movement of a fight also helps to know when it is appropriate to attempt a throw, and when it isn t. Now to be honest, I m sure that I will have erred in places, perhaps describing a Similar technique from Master Funakoshi and The Bubishi different throw than the original. But - if in places not always the exact same waza, they do work! Sensei Vince Morris. Great Holiday Gift Ideas! Read sensei Vince s gripping novel. Volume 14 issue 6 page 5 It makes you think! Unique distance learning website Just 15 mins of some form of physical exercise a day can reduce the risk of death by 14% and increase life expectancy by 3 years. Each extra 15 mins. reduces death risk by another 4%! ~ The Lancet. The fattest State in the USA is Mississippi, the slimmest is Colorado. The number of U.S. kids and teens overweight or obese - 23 MILLION! Recent feedback from a member of the distance-learning site Good evening Sensei Vince. I wanted to tell you that I am really enjoying the Kissaki-kai Web TV videos, They have opened my mind, especially to real bunkai. Now I just don't look at a kata the same way anymore. When I was a young man, all I thought about was tournaments, but I started to question the techniques I was using, wondering if they would work in a real fight. Now that I am 65 years old, I realize that what you are teaching is the truth in combat. I have friends from other styles, other than my Shotokan, who teach self defense series with prearranged attacks, and multiple strikes and kicks to defend with. I started thinking some time ago, that instead of practicing many, many techniques, I should master a few techniques that can be used in any defense. I believe what I am learning from you, is just that! Go to the website and see for yourself! Many karate-ka are now in to their 3rd year of membership. The only way to learn Kissaki-Kai in depth and detail if you do not have access to a DOJO. www.kissakikai.com "Do not get into a fight if you can possibly avoid it, but never hit soft. Always enter with bent knees below the attacker s center of gravity 2. Maintain the pull on the attacker s arm(s) right throughout the throw. 3. Usually, straighten legs for lift during the throw. 4. Sacrifice your balance as you enter - use the opponent as a counter-weight. 5. Except for sweeps & hand throws, you can t throw empty space - get good body contact. T e c h n I c A l T I p
