Many are our enemies, causing discomfort, spreading disease, and injuring our livestock, crops, and other possessions. In Illinois, for example, they destroy at least 10 percent of the crops each year. This means that we lose millions of dollars worth of crops a year just in this state alone. Not every insect, however, is harmful. Many insects are beneficial because they feed on the harmful insects and help to keep them in check. Some of these are: lady beetles, ant lions, syrphid fly larvae, parasitic flies and wasps, and praying mantids. Other insects help man by pollinating plants or providing him with useful products such as beeswax, honey, shellac, dyes, and silk. Since we are all affected by insects, everybody, sooner or later, is faced with a problem of insect control. As a 4-H member you probably have a special interest in controlling insects, since they may endanger some of your projects. The more you know about insects, the more intelligently you will be able to control them. Through a study of entomology - the science that deals with insects - you will be able to collect, preserve, and identify some of the more common ones. You will learn something of an insect's life cycle and habits, and you will learn to estimate the abundance of an insect. Also, you will find out about different kinds of control measures. Not only will all this information help you to control insects, but you will find it interesting in itself. Age What Are the General Requirements? If you are at least 10 years old and won't be 21 before July 1 of the current year, you can be a 4-H Club member and enroll in the entomology project. How and when to enroll Obtain an enrollment card from your local 4-H Club leader or from your county farm adviser, and fill it out. You may enroll any 5

6 CI RCULAR NO. 746 time up to June 1, but the sooner you get started, the more you will get out of the project. What you are expected to do In your first year you are expected to learn to know insects. This consists chiefly of making an insect collection. In the following years you can choose two or more of the following activities: enlarging your insect collection; conducting a survey to estimate the abundance of insects; rearing an insect so that you can study its life cycle and habits; and practicing control measures.. In addition, every year you are in the project you will be expected to do these things: 1. Keep an accurate record of your project and club activities in the Entomology Record Book. 2. Attend local club meetings and, when possible, county, district, and state meetings. 3. Appear on the local 4-H Club program when asked to do so. Whenever possible, give talks and demonstrations on entomology. 4. Exhibit your project at the county show or to a committee on the local club tour. PART 1-YOUR FIRST YEAR Requirements You start your entomology project by learning to know insects not all of them, of course, but at least some of the common ones. To do this, you need to study first the ways in which insects differ from their close relatives as well as the ways in which various kinds of insects differ from one another. Then you will be able to start an insect collection, learning more and more about insects as your collection grows. To make a collection, you will need to learn something about killing, preserving, and displaying insects. You will also need to make or buy some necessary equipment. These are the specific requirements: 1. You will need the following equipment: A killing bottle. Directions for making one are given on page 13. A collecting net and a mounting box, which you can either buy or make (see pages 14 and 15 ). Insect pins and labels, which your 4-H leader can supply for a small fee.

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 7 Other equipment that would be useful includes a relaxing jar, pinning block, and spreading board. Directions for making them are given on pages 16 to 18. 2. Collect at least 25 different species of insects representing at least five different orders. (What we mean by "species" and "order" is explained on pages 8 and 9.) 3. Mount and label these insects as recommended in the manual (pages 11 and 12 ). 4. Group them in the mounting boxes according to order. 5. Identify each insect by its common name whenever possible. 6. Exhibit your collection or your equipment, or both. 7. Fill out the forms for Part I in the record book. First Things to Know About Insects Be able to tell them from their relatives All animals are divided into general groups or phyla. Insects belong to the phylum called Arthropoda. This large group is in turn broken down into five classes: Insecta (insects ), Crustacea (crayfish, sowbugs, fairy shrimps, lobsters, crabs, etc. ), Arachnida (spiders, ticks, mites, scorpions), Diplopoda (millipedes or thousand leggers), and Chilopoda (centipedes or hundred leggers ). The animals belonging to these five classes are close relatives and are alike in certain ways: They have segmented bodies; jointed legs, antennae (feelers ), and other appendages; and a hardened covering over their bodies called an exoskeleton. Insects resemble some of their relatives very closely. So your first problem in collecting and identifying insects is to decide whether your specimens belong in the class of insects at all. On page 18 is a key which will help you to decide in what class a specimen belongs. Below are the characteristics which distinguish insects from other animals. General characteristics of insects All insects have a total of six legs, or three pairs, at some time during their development - usually when they are adults (Fig. 1). The body of an insect has three main parts: head, thorax, and abdomen. In certain stages of growth, however, these parts cannot always be clearly distinguished. The eyes, antennae (feelers ), and

The thorax is divided into three parts: prothorax (front), mesothorax (middle), and metathorax (back). Also shown on this diagram are the three main parts of the leg: femur (thigh or upper part), tibia (the middle part between the femur and the foot ), and tarsus (foot ). (Fig. 1) mouth parts are in the head. The three pairs of legs (and the wings, if any) are attached to the thorax. In the abdomen, which is directly behind the thorax, are tiny air openings or pores, called spiracles. Sometimes prolegs or leglike projections, called claspers or filaments, are found on the abdomen. As already mentioned, the body of an insect has a hard outer covering called an exoskeleton, which protects the fleshy internal organs against injury and loss of moisture. The material making up this exoskeleton is called chitin (pronounced ky-tin ). The wings and breathing tubes are formed from extensions of this covering. The breathing tubes open through the air openings, or spiracles, which are arranged along the sides of the abdomen. Know how insects are classified and named The class of insects is divided into a number of orders. Every member of a certain order is more closely related to one another than to members of other orders. On page 20 is a key for identifying the different orders of insect. When you first start your collection, you will be asked merely to identify an insect to the order level. Within each order of insects is a number of families. The word "family" therefore shows a closer relationship than the word "order."

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 9 Families, in turn, have been divided into genera ("genera" is the plural of "genus"). All members of the same genus are quite closely related. Within each genus is one or more species or specific kind of animal. All the different orders, families, genera, and species have been given scientific names, which are in Latin. A particular kind or species of insect or other animal is referred to scientifically by the name of its genus (which comes first and is capitalized) and then the specific name (not capitalized). For example: Species I, Order Family Genus Specific name Common name Diptera Muscidae Musca domestica Housefly The scientific name of the common housefly is thus Musca domestica. Since the common names of insects differ from country to country and may even vary from one locality to another, the scientific names are very important in identifying them. Mouth parts aid in identification One important way in which various kinds of insects differ is in their mouth parts. Scientists therefore study the mouth parts as an aid in identifying insects. Knowing how the insects feed also helps scientists to decide on the best control measures to use. Following is a list of the most common kinds of mouth parts, together with examples of insects having these mouth parts. Chewing - grasshoppers, beetles, caterpillars Piercing-sucking - fleas, bugs, certain flies, lice Chewing-lapping - bees, wasps Sponging - houseflies Siphoning - butterflies, moths Rasping-sucking - thrips How insects develop Most insects start from eggs laid by the female. In general, the insects develop from the eggs in two different ways. One group, which is said to have a "complete life cycle," goes through four stages of development (Fig. 2). These stages are: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The larva is a tiny worm which hatches from the egg. It grows steadily larger and eventually changes into a motionless, resting stage (pupa). In this stage an insect is best able to resist an adverse environ

The adult insect emerges by splitting the pupal skin. Beetles, flies, bees, butterflies, and moths are examples of this kind of insect. The other group has an "incomplete life cycle" and goes through just three stages of development. When the young hatch from the eggs, they look like adults except that they are smaller. They are called nymphs. The nymphs shed their skins as they grow larger, finally developing wings and becoming adults. Grasshoppers, crickets, roaches, and the true bugs are examples of this group. How and Where to Collect Insects To collect insects, you can use nets, traps, sifters, separators, aspirators, forceps, or brushes; you can spread a cloth around the base of the plant and jar the plant; or you can rear the insects. You will find directions for using these methods in most introductory entomology books and other publications dealing with the collection and preservation of insects. Directions for making a general-purpose net are given on page 14, and suggestions for rearing are given on page 29.

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 11 Where to look for insects is one of the first questions most beginners ask. Trained eyes can usually find some form of insect life almost anywhere. Here is a list of some likely places to look: 1. Under stones and boards, under loose bark on logs and stumps, and in decaying wood, leaves, and other debris. 2. In the air, where flying insects may be found on warm days from early spring to late fall. 3. Around street lights, porch lights, and study lights. 4. In woodpiles, especially in spring and early summer. 5. On flowers, field crops, vegetables, lawn grasses, shrubs, and trees, both by day and by night. 6. In the soil. 7. On carcasses of dead animals, excrement, garbage, decaying fruit, etc., which are invaded by many insects. 8. On domestic animals, which serve as a reservoir for many types of parasitic insects, such as fleas and lice. \ 9. In buildings - windows, flour bins, cereal packages, closets, or boxes where clothing and old papers are stored. 10. Along the edges of rivers, streams, lakes, or ponds, and in the water itself. This list is by no means complete. If you search carefully, you will find insects in still other places and will find new ways to add to your collection. Killing, Preserving, and Displaying Insects As you prepare insects for your collection, be careful to keep them looking as lifelike as possible. Different kinds of insects should be killed, preserved, and displayed in different ways. "Dry" killing and mounting To kill insects "dry," you can use a killing bottle containing evaporated carbon tetrachloride (page 13 ). You can then display the insects in a mounting box. You can either buy a mounting box or make one according to the directions on page 16. Pinning insects for mounting. The recommended ways of pinning insects for mounting vary with the type of insect. These are the acceptable ways for certain groups:

Pin through the middle line of the thorax between the bases of the front wings. Relaxing and spreading. If your specimens have become dry and brittle you should relax them before you try to mount them. Directions for making and using a relaxing jar are given on page 16. Also, the wings of butterft.ies and moths should be spread and set before mounting. To learn how to use and make a spreading board see page 18. "Liquid" killing and preserving Soft-bodied insects, such as caterpillars, maggots, grubs, and most larvae, become brittle and turn dark within a few weeks after being killed with carbon tetrachloride. They should be killed by putting them in boiling water for 1 to 5 minutes. The best way to preserve them is in alcohol. You can get vials for this purpose from supply houses, but any small jar with a tight-fitting cover will be satisfactory. You can buy the alcohol (isopropyl ) at any drugstore. Use it at full strength; do not dilute. Small, hard-bodied insects, such as ft.eas, lice, ft.ies, and book lice, can be both killed and preserved in alcohol. Most of these are too small to be pinned satisfactorily. In your first year's work in the entomology project, you do not have to preserve your specimens in alcohol unless you want to. Labeling While you are preparing your specimens for mounting, be sure to attach a temporary label showing the date and place of collection. Before you put them into your collection, attach permanent labels below the pinned specimens or place a label in the vial with specimens that are preserved in a liquid.

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 13 Labels should include the following information: locality, date, name of collector, host (food, plant, animal, or material where the insect was found ), and name of insect. If you put the insect in a mounting box, this information is usually carried on two or three separate labels. In Fig. 6, page 17, is shown a pinned insect, together with directions for using a pinning block to get your labels on the pin evenly. Use a permanent-type ink on labels in your mounting box. Write in pencil on labels that are to be placed in vials of alcohol. Killing bottles Equipment You Will Need Get a wide-mouthed jar (pint or quart) and if possible a smaller container, such as a glass vial (Fig. 3 ). The smaller size, which is convenient for tiny specimens, can be prepared at the same time as the larger jar with little extra trouble. Put six to ten pieces of inner-tube strips ( 1" x 2") or rubber bands in the bottom of each container. Pour in enough carbon tetrachloride to barely cover the rubber. You can get carbon tetrachloride from either a drugstore or a dry cleaner. Cut out a circle of blotting paper slightly larger than the bottom of the jar. Put the blotter into the jar Y2 to 1 inch above the rubber strips. @~~~~ < Screw top Cork stopper Tissue paper Blotter Rubber bands carbon You can prepare a killing bottle quite easily by studying this diagram and following the directions given on this page and the next. (Fig. 3)

14 CIRCULAR NO. 746 Then put some crumpled tissue paper on the blotter, and seal the jar tightly. The chemical will evaporate rapidly, and the jar can be used to kill insects in about 30 minutes. Add more carbon tetrachloride as needed, but do not wet either the tissue paper or blotter. To kill insects you have captured in a net, swing the net back and forth a few times to get the insects into the bottom. Then grasp the net about 4 to 6 inches from the bottom and squeeze tightly. Remove the lid from the killing jar and insert the end of the net with the insects in it. Screw the cover on as tightly as possible. It will take 3 to 5 minutes to kill the insects. They are then ready to mount. General-purpose collecting net Although you can buy a collecting net, you can also make one by following these directions: You will need a broom handle 3 1 /2 to 4 Y2 feet long and about 1 inch thick; a piece of heavy wire 3 feet 8 inches long and Va inch in r----12"---- B To make a general-purpose collecting net, you need a broom handle, light and heavy wire, and a light fabric such as cheesecloth or muslin. How to assemble these materials is explained on this and the following page. (Fig. 4 )

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 15 diameter; some fine wire for binding; and a light meshlike fabric (such as cheesecloth or muslin) about 1 foot wide and 2 feet long. Cut a groove 4 inches long and about V!. inch wide into one end of the broom handle (Fig. 4A). Then, at the inner end of this groove, bore a hole Va inch in diameter through the broom handle. Make a similar groove and hole in the opposite side of the handle at the same end, but make the groove only 3Y2 inches long. Fold the material for the net in half, making the doubled piece about 1 foot square. Taper each side slightly toward the fold to make the bottom of the net, when finished, slightly narrower than the top. Hem each end of the 2-foot length, then sew the two sides, leaving the hems open at the ends to run the wire through. Double-stitch the sides to keep them from fraying. Now run the wire through the hem of the net and bend it into a loop as shown in Fig. 4B. Fit the loop to the handle by running the ends of the wire along the grooves and bending the wire tips into the holes at the ends of the grooves. Then bind the handle with fine wire where the net is joined to it (Fig. 4C ). Your net is now ready to use. In addition to this general-purpose net, you can make others of different sizes and weights for specific purposes. Butterfly, beating, and aquatic nets are types that are in common use. Mounting box You can make a mounting box quite simply out of a large cigar box. Fit a piece of sheet cork snugly in the bottom, and then cover the inside with glazed white paper. If you want to, you can paint the outside of the box - preferably a dark color. Put the insects in the box on regular insect pins. Arrange them in neatly spaced rows according to their order name. For exhibit purposes, substitute a piece of snug-fitting glass for the regular cover. Small dermestid beetles will sometimes damage insect collections. To prevent such damage, put a moth ball on an insect pin in each corner of the box. Heat the pin before inserting it in the moth ball. Moth flakes can be used instead. Put them in two or more triangular troughs, fitting the troughs into corners of the box. If you need a larger box, you may want to buy it, since constructing such a box is rather a difficult job. However, directions for making

Additional equipment In addition to the necessary equipment just described, you may want some supplementary equipment. A relaxing jar, a pinning block, and a spreading board are all useful items to have. Relaxing jar. Specimens that have become dry and brittle should be relaxed before you try to mount them. A relaxing jar is

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 17 necessary for this purpose. Select a wide-mouthed quart or pint canning jar or a coffee can with a tight-fitting cover. Put 1 to B -1 inches of sand in the bottom, and moisten with water. Add a few pinches of naphthalene flakes (moth flakes ) to prevent mold. Cover the sand with a piece of cardboard. Use a small piece of paper to lower the insects into the jar. It usually takes from 12 to 24 hours for the insects to relax. However, they should be checked every few hours because some specimens may be ruined by becoming too wet or too soft. Pinning block. A pinning block will help you to get insects and labels a uniform height on pins. The diagram in Fig. 6 shows how one can be made. Put the pin through the insect first, then run the pin through the hole in the highest step, so that the insect rests on top of the step. Next, draw out the pin with the insect on it, put on the locality and host labels, and run the pin into the second step, lining up the bottom of the host label with the top of the step. Similarly, use the lowest step to adjust the label giving the name of the insect. 3" ---------:~:JI To arrange your labels uniformly on the pins, use a block of wood having three steps - % inch, % inch, and 1Va inch in depth. Make a hole, a little wider than the pins, all the way through each step. How to use this pinning block is explained in the paragraph above the picture. A pinned insect is shown at the left. Be careful to put all necessary information on the labels. (Fig. 6 )

Plane each piece along one side to a thickness of % inch. (2 ) Two end blocks, each 5Y2 inches long and 1 inch deep. (3) A flat piece of sheet cork 16Y2 inches long and 1 inch wide. Assemble these materials according to the above diagram. (Fig. 7) Spreading board. The spreading board is used to spread and set the wings of butterflies and moths. The diagram in Fig. 7 shows how you can make one. Be sure the specimens are thoroughly relaxed before you spread them. Pin the insect in the usual way, thrusting the pin through the cork until the wing bases are level with the top pieces. Then carefully draw the wings forward with a pin caught behind the heavy front margin of each wing. The hind margin of the front wing should be at right angles to the insect's body and the front margin of the hind wing should be just under the front wing. Hold the wings in this position by inserting a pin near the base of the front margin of each wing. Finally lay strips of paper lengthwise across the wings and pin them down securely, placing the pins close to the wings but not through them. You may then remove the original adjusting pins. Let the insects dry 2 to 3 weeks before transferring them to the mounting box. Key to the Classes of Arthropoda As already mentioned (page 7), insects belong to a group or phylum of animals called Arthropoda. This phylum is divided into five common classes, one of which is the class Insecta (insects ). To determine whether a specimen belongs in the insect class, use the following key. You will notice that it consists of four pairs of statements. Start with the first pair. If your specimen has 2 pairs of antennae and 5 or more pairs of legs, you can see right away that it belongs in the class Crustacea. If it has 1 pair of antennae or none

Here you can either identify your specimen as belonging to the class Arachnida (if it has no antennae and 4 pairs of legs ), or you go on to the next pair of statements. 26 CIRCULAR NO. 746 PART II - CONTINUING YOUR PROJECT Requirements After you have finished your first year's work, you may find that you want to learn many more things about insects - especially if you are interested in controlling them. If so, you may continue your project by doing more advanced work. You will be expected to do two or more of the following things each year: (1) enlarge your insect collection; (2 ) make an insect survey; (3 ) rear insects; (4 ) control insects. Enlarging Your Collection Enlarge your insect collection so that it contains 50 or more different species representing 10 or more orders. You may want to identify the insects to family and genus levels. As an aid in recognizing the different insects, add to your collection of literature. (A list of suggested publications is given on the back of this manual. ) Your club as a whole or you as an individual may want to help prepare a county insect collection to be used for reference purposes. Add to your equipment and technics Buy or make any additional equipment you need. By now you should have a standard glass-topped wooden mounting box. Add to your mounting technic by using liquid preservatives such as alcohol for soft-bodied insects (page 12 ) and pointing for small insects (see below ). Card points - a valuable mounting technic Very small insects cannot be pinned through the body with a regular pin, as it will break too many of the insect parts. Instead the insects are mounted or.. card points. Card points are small triangles of cardboard or celluloid (Fig. 12 ). A pin is put through one of the sides, and the point opposite the pinned side is bent down. You put a spot of glue on the bent tip, and press the right side of the insect Sma ll i n sects can be against the glued surface. KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 27 zontal and its head forward. Legs, wings, and antennae should be in view and as little of the body as possible hidden by the glue or card point. Use only a very little glue - a small amount holds well and gives a better specimen for study than a large amount. The points should be cut as uniformly as possible and should be about % inch long. Making a Survey Insect surveys serve many purposes. The first purpose, of course, is to find out what insects are present in a certain area. As you add to your knowledge of insects you can learn many things from a survey: for example, whether the insects are numerous enough to do much damage, when during the season this damage may occur, and in what areas it can be expected. You may also discover insects that haven't been known in your area before. From surveys one can predict not just what insect damage may occur during the present season but also what damage can be expected the following year. Suppose, for example, that you find three adult spittlebugs in one sweep of the net, half way around you, in a clover or alfalfa field in September. Scientists have figured out from their knowledge of spittlebugs that one spittlebug nymph will appear on each stem in that field the following spring - assuming that weather conditions are normal or nearly so. You are expected to make three kinds of survey: ( 1) a general survey of your home or surrounding acreage (or both) ; ( 2 ) a survey by periods to detect changes in insect populations; and (3 ) a survey on a host plant, animal, or building. General survey List the kinds of insects you find in your home or surrounding acreage, or both, and estimate the numbers of each. In making your estimates, you may use such terms as slight, light, medium, abundant, and heavy. However, since it takes a great deal of experience to use such terms accurately, it might be better to actually count the insects you find in certain areas. Be sure to choose a method of measuring which is convenient and understandable - other people should be able to use it and get results similar to yours. For example, you can give the number per

28 CIRCULAR NO. 746 linear foot of row in wheat or rye field or per square foot in a clover or alfalfa field. Choose a linear or square foot in each of four or five spots and report the average number. You might give the number of insects found on 25 plants in a cornfield, choosing plants in different parts of the field. Or you might give the number collected in 25 sweeps of a net as you walk through a grass or legume field. Other possibilities are the number per 2 or 3 square feet in a building, the number on a plant or given part of a plant, or the number on an animal or part of an animal. Make counts on several plants, animals, or areas of a building and report your average. Include beneficial as well as destructive insects. As already mentioned (page 5 ), some insects live by feeding on the harmful insects, thus helping to hold the destructive insects in check and keeping a balance in nature. These beneficial insects include lady beetles, ant lions, syrphid fly larvae, parasitic flies and wasps, praying mantids, and many others. Other insects furnish useful products such as honey, beeswax, shellac, dyes, and silk. You can learn more about the beneficial insects and how to identify them by studying some of the publications listed on page 36. Destructive insects do damage in a number of different ways. Some feed on their hosts, causing in jury with their chewing or sucking mouthparts. Others transmit organisms that cause disease; while still others are annoying by their presence only. Complete the table in your record book, listing the common name, date observed, estimated abundance, source of food, part of plant or animal on which the insect was found, and the way in which the insect does its damage. You will be surprised at how many insects you will find and how well acquainted you will become with them. Survey on a host plant, animal, or building Select a single host - plant, animal, or building - and report the kinds of insects you find and the number of each. You may be surprised at the variety of insects attacking one host. Try to classify the insects by order, estimate their abundance, and if they are destructive, tell how they do their damage. R eport beneficial insects as well as destructive ones. Pick out the insect causing the most damage to its host and out

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 29 line its life cycle (see Fig. 2, page 10 ). Doing this will give you information that will help you in your survey work. You can learn, for example, at which stage the insect is destructive and whether one stage is more adaptable for a survey study than another. You will find that knowing the life cycle will also help in control. Survey by periods For this study, you estimate the abundance of two or more common insects over a period of at least 4 weeks. During this period, make several checks to detect any changes that may occur in the size of the population. Whenever possible, estimate the numbers in each stage of the life cycle. You may find that the egg stage is rather difficult to locate and observe. Some of the insects which you may want to use for this survey are: grasshoppers, chinch bugs, spittlebugs, clover leaf weevils, aphids, corn borers, corn earworms, houseflies, horn flies, cutworms, squash bugs, elm leaf beetles, and roaches. In the record book report your estimate of each stage each time you make a survey. Make your estimates as exact as possible and make them in the same way each time. Under the heading, "General Survey," you will find suggestions for possible ways of making a count. Give possible reasons for any differences that occurred in insect numbers from one time to another. Weather, other insects, birds, or insecticides, for example, may have affected the population of the insect you are studying. Rearing Insects Maybe you think of bees first when insect rearing is mentioned. If so - and-if you are more interested in rearing honeybees than other insects, you should enroll in the honey-production project. By rearing an insect you can observe the various stages through which it passes and learn about its habits. You will en joy watching the insect go through its life cycle (pages 9 and 10 ). If it has a complete life cycle it will change from a small egg into a wormlike animal with chewing mouthparts (larva), then into a pupa having a protective shell and showing little movement, and finally into a highly complex adult. If it has an incomplete life cycle, it will change from an egg into a nymph and then into an adult.

30 CIRCULAR NO. 746 Scientists rear insects for a number of reasons: For one thing, they can find the weakest link in the life cycle so that they will know at which stage the insect is most easily controlled. Knowing the length of each stage will also help scientists to time their control measures. Some insects may not be recognizable in their immature stagesrearing them is therefore an aid in identification. Beneficial insects are sometimes reared in numbers so that they can be used to control other insects. Insects are also reared commercially for their useful products. Selecting an insect You should select an insect whose natural environment you can duplicate. If possible, choose one having two or more generations a year - such as the housefly, bean beetle, clothes moth, cabbage worm, a grain insect, or an insect found in cereal products. Cages You will need a cage that will confine the insect you are rearing. Most cages are made of screen wire or cheesecloth fine enough to keep the insects from escaping. Sometimes you can build a cage around a plant that is harboring the insect you have selected. Or it may be easier to pot a plant and put it in a cage. Screw-top jars may be used to cage certain insects. Food needed You can decide what food the insect needs by observing what it eats in its natural environment. If you want to raise a larva that you have found feeding on elm leaves, for example, put it in your cage and give it elm leaves to eat. Many insects must have soil in which to develop, so it's a good idea to put a few inches of soil at the bottom of the cage - unless you know for certain that your insect doesn't need it. Predatory insects, such as praying mantids, ant lions, or lady beetles, may be kept in a glass cage and fed aphids, flies, grasshoppers, and other live insects. Proper care of insects Insects can catch diseases just like other animals. So keep the rearing cages as clean as possible. A daily cleanup may be necessary. Cleanliness not only helps the insects to survive but also makes the work a little more enjoyable.

KNOWING AND CONTROLLING INSECTS 31 If you have to handle the insects, do it gently - otherwise a large number may die. Physical conditions, such as temperature, moisture, and light, should be held as constant as possible for each stage. Avoid too much moisture, as this is often a cause of failure. Rearing houseflies Houseflies are a little harder to rear than the others suggested on page 30. That is why they are being given here as an example of insect rearing. You will need a small cage covered with cheesecloth. A cage 8/1x 8/1x 8/1 will be large enough. Capture several adult flies and put them in the cage. Partly fill a small saucer with milk, put a piece of crumpled paper toweling in the milk, and place the saucer in the cage. The flies will feed on the milk and the females will lay their whitish masses of eggs on the paper toweling. When the eggs have been laid, fill an empty tin can or glass jar with finely ground livestock feed (poultry mash is ideal) to within Y2 inch of the top. With your finger, dig a small hole Y4 to Yz inch deep in the feed, and transfer some of the fly eggs from the paper toweling to this hole. Cover the eggs with the moistened feed. Place the container with the eggs on the floor of the cage and put a few handfuls of dry sand around the base of the container. The larvae or maggots which hatch from the eggs will burrow around in the feed until they are full grown; then they will crawl out of the container and drop into the sand. Keep the feed in the container moist until after the larvae have left it. After the larvae crawl to the dry sand, they will change into the resting or pupal stage. In this stage they are reddish-brown and are the size and shape of a grain of wheat. It is from this stage that the adults will emerge and complete the cycle. Collect and preserve some insects at each stage of development. The other insects listed may be reared more easily since all stages develop on the same plant or material. Report your findings In your record book report how you raised your insect, any problems you met, and the time necessary for the insect to pass through the various stages of its life cycle. Illustrate by drawing the life cycle of the insect you reared. (In Fig. 2, page 10, is shown the life cycle of the cabbage webworm. )

32 CIRCULAR NO. 746 Insect Control For this part of the entomology project, you will be expected to study one insect carefully, so that you can control it. You will need to know, for example, how it causes injury and the stage at which it does its damage. Insects like clothes moths, dog fleas, houseflies, grasshoppers, roaches, ants, boxelder bugs, garden and lawn pests, and lice on cattle, swine, and poultry are good ones for small-scale control programs. Before you use control measures on the insect you have selected, estimate how many are present in the area where you are going to work. Then, after you have applied your control measures, make inspections at regular intervals, estimating the number of insects present each time. Note general weather conditions or anything else, such as. the presence of other insects or animal life feeding on the insect, that would influence the results of your treatments. Report all your observations in the control section of your record book, and tell what control measures you used. Types of control There are two kinds of insect control: natural and applied. Natural control is that provided by nature. For example, the weather may be bad for insects. Or natural enemies of an insect - other insects, birds, or four-footed animals - may prey on it and help to control it. Also, insects, like man and other animals, are subject to disease. Applied control is man's attempt to combat insects. It includes the following types: 1. Chemical- spraying, dusting, or fumigating with insecticides. 2. Mechanical and physical - fly swatter, trap, electric shock. 3. Cultural-creating an unfavorable environment by such means as plowing, rotating crops, pruning, etc. 4. Biological - using parasites and predators. 5. Legislative - inspection, quarantine, and laws enforcing the use of the other four types of control measures.
